E3 2006: PS3 Too Cheap -- Kutaragi
SCE boss has been talking again.
by Anoop Gantayat
May 9, 2006 - Krazy Ken's at it again. Following the surprise pre-E3 announcement of the PlayStation 3 price, Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi spoke with Japan's IT Media and offered up this beauty: "It's probably too cheap."
In case you skipped out on Monday's press conference, here's the deal. In addition to showing a slew of game demonstrations, Sony Computer Entertainment's Kaz Hirai announced launch specifics for the system. PS3 will go on sale first in Japan on 11/11 at a price of 59,800 yen for a 20GB model, with a 60GB model set at open pricing. The US will get the system on 11/17 with cost set at, respectively, $499 and $599.
Kutaragi explained to IT Media why be believes the price isn't a problem:
"This is the PS3 price. Expensive, cheap -- we don't want you to think of it in terms of game machines. Because the PS3 is like nothing else.
For instance, is it not nonsense to compare the charge for dinner at the company cafeteria with dinner at a fine restaurant? It's a question of what you can do with that game machine. If you can have an amazing experience, we believe price is not a problem.
When we announced the PlayStation price, it was said to be expensive. Same for the PlayStation 2. However, when released, both had sales that were unthinkable for previous game machines. This is because both offered experiences that could not be had on previous game machines.
With the PS3, you can have next generation game experiences that could previously not be experienced -- things like next generation graphics and various services via the network. And, as with the PS and PS2, we believe people who like games will, without question, purchase it."
Kutaragi also took the time to comment on Sony's shipping targets for the system. SCE plans to have two million units available at launch (the Japanese press reports this as the initial shipment figure for the system, and not a number that will be gradually released over a launch window), with another two million by the end of the year and two million more before the end of March 2007. Regarding this, Kutaragi said, "Of course, this is a number that we announced having made sure we can definitely prepare it. There is the possibility of unexpected problems like earthquake or theft, so I won't say it's absolute, but if this type of trouble does not occur, there's no problem with this number." _________________ "When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."- C.S. Sure. _________________ "When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."- C.S. Lewis

Speaking of Sony, Am I the only one that wasn't impressed with their conference? As of now there are only 2 games I'm interested in(MGS4 & FFVIII. And that really isn't worth 500$(Then again I'm sure they will find a way to force you to get the more expensive one). _________________ "I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept." - Calvin

Hell with the PS3, I want a Wii. And that's despite the retarded name. Metroid Prime 3, Twilight Princess, Red Steel, and a new Smash Bros game? Plus there's not only motion sensing in the right-hand remote, there's motion sensing in the NUNCHUCK part as well.
Glorious.
And I'll bet you a dollar it'll cost much less than the PS3 or XBox. _________________ anime is teh s uck

Heck yeah. I'm willing to bet that the Wii will cost no more than $250.00. Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, ExciteTruck, and even Wii Sports are looking sweet. Mario's rumored to be a launch title, but I doubt Prime 3 will make it in time. Still no info on Smash Bros. Wii, though. Nintendo will probably reveal it closer to launch (perhaps as a surprise launch title, since it's been nearly 5 years since Melee).

Last I heard, the creator of Smash Bros. and SB Melee had retired, but then agreed to come back for the 3rd installment.
Which is why even though that's all I know about it, I'm excited. It's possible that I've played Melee more than any other console game. _________________ anime is teh s uck

E3 2006: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Wii's big brawler is full of surprises. First details and screenshots inside!
by IGN Staff
May 10, 2006 - Nintendo just pulled a fast one on us. At an after-hours press briefing a mere minute ago, the company pulled another ace out of its sleeve: Super Smash Bros. Brawl -- the next installment in Nintendo's popular Super Smash Bros. series.
Shigeru Miyamoto himself has confirmed the following playable characters:
Pit (Kid Icarus)
Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid)
Zero Suit Samus (the blue "no-suit" Samus from Metroid: Zero Mission)
Metaknight (Kirby)
Wario (Wario)
Under the direction of series creator Masahiro Sakurai, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will feature classic, GameCube-style combat -- not Wii-style motion-controlled combat. That means players who prefer to play the game with the traditional control setup can look forward to using the GameCube control-style they're already accustomed to.
"We found that trying to implement too much motion-sensory functionality can get in the way of the game. We're looking at keeping the control simple, as it has been," said Sakurai. "The Wii hardware has sockets for the GameCube controller, too. So I'll just say now that you may not want to throw away your GCN controller yet."
The game also features a range of new nasty toys, such as the ability to unleash a puppy from Nintendogs that will run up to the screen, put its paws up and obscure the view of the action. Mario, Kirby, Pikachu and Link have been confirmed as returning characters. Sakurai confirmed that Wario actually has a fart attack and that Solid Snake can use his trusty cardboard box. In the video trailer, Snake gets out of the box and says "It's showtime!"
"We thought a lot about what to do with Snake and his moves in Super Smash Bros. Brawl," said Sakurai. "As you all know Snake walks around with a gun, but with Super Smash Bros. I didn't want to bring in a lot of real weapons. So that was a real challenge. But conversely, if we could use things like rocket launchers and other explosives, not only would that be fitting for Snake, but it would work for the other characters. But who knows. Maybe Snake will exclusively use explosives throughout the game."
Sakurai said the decision to include Solid Snake when Hideo Kojima himself practically "begged" to include the Metal Gear character in the last Smash Bros. game. When asked about the possibility of Sonic the Hedgehod appearing in the game as well, Shigeru Miyamoto said: "There are probably possibilities for other third parties as well, and it maybe that even know there are corporate discussions going on about including some of these other characters."
Even better, the game will be fully online playable in addition to featuring a robust multiplayer mode. "My plan is to include Wi-Fi connection compatibility and online functionality. One of the primary reasons Super Smash Bros. Brawl was created was that Nintendo, when taking Wii online, wanted to have Smash Bros. to do that," added Sakurai.
The bad news is that Super Smash Bros. Brawl will no longer be a Wii launch title, but will instead be released in 2007.

Solid Snake in Smash Bros. Brawl? Nice! If Sonic actually made it in as well, this would be the biggest gaming crossover ever!

I wonder just how many characters this game will have. I'm still holding out for Ridley.
Anyone else otice that it's just the SSBM engine with upped poly counts, and higher texture resolutions? _________________ This space left intentionally blank.

Is there anything wrong with that? After what must by now be over a thousand hours of play, I'm still discovering new moves. _________________ anime is teh s uck
