Post subject: Wulin Warriors/"Thunderforce" Info
|

|
|
Hi everyone,
I just registered to the forum after reading your news item about "Thunderforce" and wanted to share a little more info about the series since few in North America are aware of it.
I'm a professional puppeteer in Canada and first learned about Pili or "Thunderforce" (the English name) while working in Taiwan, which loves puppetry so much government officials have been known to do impromtu puppet shows during press conferences (I am not making this up!).
Anyways, I write a blog about film and video puppetry and having been following the series and the movie based on it for a few years. I posted an entry about this today that contains links to more info and the trailer from the Thunderforce movie - http://puppetvision.blogspot.com/2005/03/thunderforce-comes-to-cartoon-network.html
I have no idea why Cartoon Network picked this up; the show is awesome but the animation is limited mostly to CG effects. I have more info on the show and it's creator if anyone is interested.

You, know, I wondered the same thing when I first heard that Cartoon Network picked this up. Why would a network dedicated to cartoons pick a show up that involved puppets?
The way I figure it, is that cartoons are animation. Claymation is animation. And by this logic, puppting is animation.
And then I told myself that it is good to broaden one's horizens. So I stopped questioning, and accepted CN's decision. I'll pass judgement on the show once I see it. _________________ anime is teh s uck

I want to personally thank you for registering here in our forums and posting this info. Most of us were starting to panic and we needed some more in-sight into this series. Your thread here is very greatly appreciated. _________________ Toonami visual schedule - UPDATED AUGUST 2, 2015 |

Puppets are technically animation if you use a certain definition of the word.
From dictionary.com
an·i·ma·tion Audio pronunciation of "animation" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (n-mshn)
n.
1. The act, process, or result of imparting life, interest, spirit, motion, or activity.
So, the puppeteers would be animating the puppets (give motion/activity to). _________________ Able and Baker is nice. |

The whole question of "is puppetry animation?" or vice versa has been debated for years in the puppetry community. They really are two separate, distinct artforms though. I think that the line is blurred because stop motion (or "model" or "puppet") animation uses puppets.
I've studied both and they share a lot in common, but the definition of animation is to create a timed series of graphic images or frames that together give the appearance of continuous movement. Both artforms revolve around the idea of creating the illusion of life where none exists, but animators have exact, frame-by-frame control over their work while puppeteers work in real time performance.
That said, there is increasingly a lot of blending of puppetry and animation in 3D now. Performance capture is essentially mime which is an extension of puppetry. So when they use mocap they are using puppetry techniques to create animation.
I'll stop rambling now... |

Well, assuming we classify puppeteering as animating, would that make it a cartoon? The question becomes, are all animations cartoons?
For example, a dog is an animel. EVERY dog is an animal. But not ever ANIMAL is a dog. The the question is, is there a difference between Cartoons and Animation. If Cartoons are a type of ANimation, then, by virtue of name only, puppeteering does on belong on Cartoon Network. By virtue of Spirit? That's a whole nother barrle of monkeys.
But again, I won't pass judgement until I see the show. I'm just playing devil's advocate here. _________________ anime is teh s uck

So, going by that description, would The Muppet Show be considered CN-worthy? _________________ Toonami visual schedule - UPDATED AUGUST 2, 2015 |

The Muppet Show is live action, so unfortunately no, but Muppet Babies might be okay if CN would deal with all of the copyrights involved. _________________ "Just checking."
