Fansubs aren't that bad, but they are illegal. However I would rather get free anime then have to spend $30 on DVD's. I used to like DVD's so much more, I couldn't stand fansubs....I got all of Kenshin on DVD, 1-95 I downloaded some inbetween when I short on cash...but then I realized I just spent about 300 bucks on DVD's alone, so I have learned to tolerate fansubs. I downloaded all of .hack//sign a few weeks ago, and it was great quality, which was pretty surprising.
Now, because of Zechs influence..and a couple of others...i just download the 1st couple of eps, and see if its good. Then depending if I have money or not and if it is good, I keep on downloading or buy the DVD's.

when I was living on my own I would spend 200+ dollars on various movies (dvd or vhs) a month... I justified this by saying "I don't have cable, I need something to watch"... cable would have cost less than 45 dollars a month; but that's not the point. For some reason DVD's are addictive. You can download some eps in a series and say "eh..." but you just can't do that when you have bought say two discs in a series of 8; you'll end up saying "oh, I got 20 bucks to spare, why not?" not to long after that you'll be breaking into peoples houses and selling their children for movies. I download fansubs all the time. I watch it and I delete it . If I really like I'll pick it up when it's released here and have the money for it.
