Sony Pictures Television is becoming the first major television studio to enter the direct-to-DVD market for series. SPT has launched Culver Entertainment, a company focused on developing and producing drama, comedy, and animated series exclusively for DVD and international distribution. The first project under the Culver Entertainment banner will be a new animated Spider-Man series. The first 13 half-hour episodes of the show are expected to be released next year. SPT president Steve Mosko said the launch of Culver Entertainment, named after the Culver Studios where it will be housed, is part of the company's overall strategy of finding new ways to reach the consumer directly.

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 15 -- BET's newly-established animation division announces two new major deals in the world of animation. BET has partnered with Film Roman, the award-winning animation studio behind primetime hits "The Simpsons" and "King of the Hill," to produce a slate of animated films and multi-platform series. In addition, BET is re-uniting Denys Cowan, BET Senior Vice President of Animation and his former creative partner, Milestone Media co-founder Dwayne McDuffie -- the creative minds behind "Static Shock", the WB's top-rated Saturday morning cartoon and top-selling comic series -- to create a new action adventure series. The announcements were made today by Reginald Hudlin, BET President of Entertainment and Cowan.

Through its pact with Film Roman, an IDT Entertainment Company, BET plans to produce a slate of animated films, series and multi-platform content for Internet, broadband and mobile applications. In addition, the companies plan to jointly develop and produce direct-to-DVD and theatrical releases. The terms of the three-year, non-exclusive deal also include international distribution outside of the BET Network.

This is BET animation's second major announcement, coming on the heels of the recent "Hannibal the Conqueror" series development deal with film star Vin Diesel and One Race Productions. In expanding the BET brand to animation, Hudlin is building upon a first-year success which has already generated some of the network's best ratings and critical acclaim in BET's 26-year history. He believes these new relationships in the world of animation will further fuel his growth strategy, and says viewers will begin to see animation on the channel this year by fourth quarter.

"If Black America is a cultural superpower, then there's no better medium to express the full range of our collective imagination than animation," said Hudlin. "There will be shorts that will air throughout our programming schedule as well as online content. Hopefully, by fall of next year, we'll begin to launch our animated series."

Sidney Clifton, Executive Vice President of Creative, Programming & Production for Film Roman, echoed Hudlin's enthusiasm about the partnership. "We are very excited at the opportunity to use animation to provide our audience with strong storytelling illustrating the full breadth, depth, and texture of the Black creative consciousness," stated Clifton.

In addition to the Film Roman partnership, BET has inked an agreement to develop a new original adult action/adventure animated series with Dwayne McDuffie, co-creator (with BET's Denys Cowan) of the Emmy Award and Humanitas Prize winning cartoon, "Static Shock". Cowan and McDuffie were co-founders of Milestone Media, Inc., the most successful Black-owned comic book company in history. McDuffie is also a producer and story editor on Cartoon Network's "Justice League", Editor-In-Chief of Milestone Media's award-winning line of comic books, and has worked as an editor for Marvel Comics and Harvey Entertainment. As head of BET Animation, Cowan will oversee the development of all new projects and work closely with McDuffie.

"Cowan and McDuffie are the Lennon & McCartney of the Black comic book industry," says Hudlin. "They've produced several of the top animated series on television. We're thrilled to have this 'dynamic duo' come together again to develop a new franchise for BET."

As a writer, Dwayne has created or co-created more than a dozen series, including Damage Control, Deathlok II, Icon, Xombi, The Road To Hell and Hardware. He has written stories for dozens of other comics, including Spider- Man, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, The Tick, Captain Marvel, Avengers Spotlight, Back To The Future, Hellraiser, Ultraman, (The Artist Formerly Known As) Prince and X-O Manowar. "Black culture is youth culture. Where Black people go--pop culture follows," stated Cowan. "At BET Animation, with our creative partnerships and working with established superstars as well as young, hip creators, we hope to be the leaders of the next revolution in animation."

Turner UK to ax smoking scenes from cartoons
Cable network to remove decades-old sequences after viewer complaint

LONDON - Turner Broadcasting is scouring more than 1,500 classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons, including old favorites Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo, to edit out scenes that glamorize smoking.

The review was triggered by a complaint to British media regulator Ofcom by one viewer who took offence to two episodes of Tom and Jerry shown on the Boomerang channel, part of Turner Broadcasting which itself belongs to Time Warner Inc.

“We are going through the entire catalogue,” Yinka Akindele, spokeswoman for Turner in Europe, said on Monday.

“This is a voluntary step we’ve taken in light of the changing times,” she said, adding the painstaking review had been prompted by the Ofcom complaint.

The regulator’s latest news bulletin stated that a viewer, who was not identified, had complained about two smoking scenes on Tom and Jerry, saying they “were not appropriate in a cartoon aimed at children.”

In the first, “Texas Tom”, the hapless cat Tom tries to impress a feline female by rolling a cigarette, lighting it and smoking it with one hand. In the second, “Tennis Chumps”, Tom’s opponent in a match smokes a large cigar.

“The licensee has ... proposed editing any scenes or references in the series where smoking appeared to be condoned, acceptable, glamorized or where it might encourage imitation,” Ofcom said, adding that “Texas Tom” was one such example.

Akindele said cartoons would only be modified “where smoking could be deemed to be cool or glamorized”, and that scenes where a villain was featured with a cigarette or cigar would not necessarily be cut.

“These are historic cartoons, they were made well over 50 years ago in a different time and different place,” she added. “Our audience is children and we don’t want to be irresponsible.”

Turner Broadcasting could not immediately be reached for comment.

Ofcom said it recognized smoking was more generally accepted when cartoons were produced in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, but argued that the threshold for including such scenes when the audience was predominately young should be high.

About 56 percent of Boomerang’s audience is aged four to 14 years old.

Early reaction to the review on Web logs broadly attacked Turner’s decision.

“Have to dig out all those photos and films of (Winston) Churchill and airbrush out the cigars,” said a message posted on the “Organ Grinder” forum on the Guardian newspaper’s Web site.

After Ant Bully, I was certain that I never wanted to see another piece of CG animation with insects in it. That was until I saw this short film on YouTube called Minuscule. Conceptually, it is one of the freshest bits of animation I've seen in a while. The insect designs are a cross between realistic/cartoon, their environment is live-action, and the gags are pure cartoon. It's difficult to describe because while the gags are timed very cartoony, the overall feel is more naturalistic than your average cartoon. The results are laugh-out-loud funny and the short works on every level. (Be sure to turn up the volume because the sfx are excellent as well.)

I was so impressed that I decided to find out exactly what this is. Turns out that Minuscule is a TV pilot co-created by Hélène Giraud (production design) and Thomas Szabo (direction). The show has been picked up and they're currently creating 78 dialogue-less 6-minute shorts chronicling the adventures of the entire insect kingdom. The production company is France's Futurikon and the series is slated to air in the US on Disney Channel. If the rest of the episodes hold up to the quality of this pilot, I think we're in for something special.

You can watch the pilot here at Cartoon Brew.

I think this pilot reminds me of the podrace scene from Star Wars Episode I, only with insects. This looks like it would make a great addition to The Disney Channel.

According to the October issue of Newtype (Japan) (On sale September 10), four new Evangelion movies are in the works. The four movies will include a prequel, a mid-series movie, a sequel and a "final" movie. The prequel movie is due out early summer 2007.

While the new story will be set during the same time frame as the original TV series, Newtype states that it will be an entirely new project, not be a remake or improvement of any sort. Newtype also mentions that viewers will not need to have already seen previous Evangelion material in order to understand and enjoy the new movies.

Hideaki Anno will write the scenario for the first movie and will be the general director and manager for the entire project. Kazuya Tsurumaki (FLCL) will direct the movies while Yoshiyuki Sadamoto will provide character designs and Ikuto Yamashita will provide mechanical designs. Shinji Higuchi will provide storyboards for the first movie.

Khara, a new studio that shares office space with Gainax, was recently set up and is seeking production staff to work on Anno's new project.

Spaceballs: The Animated Series
posted by joshualane at Animated Bliss - January 20 2005 - 11:35pm

LOS ANGELES and BERLIN, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BFC Berliner Film Companie has partnered with Brooksfilms and MGM Domestic Television Distribution, a unit of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (NYSE: MGM), to create an animated television series based on the classic Mel Brooks comedy "Spaceballs."

"We are thrilled to be working with a comic genius like Mel Brooks on what we're sure will be the highly successful translation of his classic film comedy to the medium of animation for TV," said Rainer Soehnlein, chief executive officer of BFC Berliner Film Companie Group. "We look forward to our collaboration with him and with MGM, and to bringing 'Spaceballs' to a new audience."

Under the agreement, BFC and MGM will produce an hour-long pilot and 13 half-hour episodes. Additionally, MGM will distribute the program in the U.S., Canada and internationally with the exception of Germany.

Brooks and Thomas Meehan, who together co-wrote the original screenplay, will write the pilot and supervise writing on the rest of the series. Brooks and Soehnlein will serve as executive producers and Brooks will provide the voice of two main characters, President Scroob and Yogurt.

"Primetime animation has become a powerful staple and with the unmatched comedic talents of Mel Brooks and BFC's expertise, you've got quite a winning combination," said Jim Packer, MGM's executive vice president of television distribution, North America. "To this day, 'Spaceballs' is incredibly successful on television and in video, and with the abundance of Sci-fi films that have come out in the past decade, there's no shortage of material for Mel."

"Spaceballs" was released theatrically in 1987. The film's storyline focuses on Planet Spaceball's President Scroob, who sends Lord Dark Helmet to steal Planet Druidia's abundant supply of air to replenish that of his own planet. Only the hero, Lone Star, can stop the evil plan.

G4 has picked up the rights to it.

'Animals' set to roam at Fox
By JOSEF ADALIAN, Daily Variety

Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions is teaming with "TV Funhouse" creator Robert Smigel for "Animals," an animated comedy that's been sold to Fox Broadcasting.

Sandler's company is also partnering with 20th Century Fox TV on the half-hour show.

"Animals" will be a parody of suburban life, with critters filling in for humans. Smigel and Greg Cohen ("King of the Hill") will write and exec produce.

While Happy Madison is based at Sony for TV, the "Animals" project predates the company's deal with the studio, a Sony rep said.

Smigel's "Saturday Night Live"-based "TV Funhouse" series of shorts uses animation as a means of social commentary. His other network credits include "The Dana Carvey Show" and "Late Night With Conan O'Brien."

Fox has been making a push to develop a new generation of animated comedies, with "The Simpsons" and "King of the Hill" both getting up in years (though "Family Guy" and "American Dad" are doing well).

Rich Drees at FilmBuffOnline.com reports that Roy Disney, speaking at the Philadelphia Film Festival this past weekend, made it clear that a home video release of Song of the South is long overdue. Said Roy:

“I’ve got a bunch of cohorts working with me to convince the powers that be that it’s the smart thing to do. [Song Of The South] is a wonderful film that deserves to be back out in the public. All it needs is context. Some of that animation is stunning, even by today’s standards.”

In the meantime, for those who can’t wait, Disney has apparently released SOTS in France, in English, and was selling it at Disneyland Paris! Check this out.

Los Angeles, June 13, 2007 – Robert Mark Kamen has been signed to write the screenplay for the upcoming CG-animated motion picture Gatchaman, it was jointly announced today by Imagi Studios Co-CEO & Chief Creative Officer Francis Kao and Co-CEO Douglas E. Glen.

Kamen will work closely on Gatchaman with producer Lynne Southerland and director Kevin Munroe (TMNT). Scheduled for completion in late 2008, Gatchaman will expand the visual boundaries of CG animation through dynamic camera work and action sequences. [Suuure it will. Rolling Eyes - N.]

“Imagi is breaking exciting new ground in the animation industry by making big action movies in pure computer graphics. It is a privilege to be working with such an innovative team of artists,” Kamen said.

A veteran writer who has authored 18 produced feature films since 1979, Kamen’s credits include Taps, The Karate Kid and its sequels, A Walk in the Clouds, The Power of One, Lethal Weapon 3, The Professional, The Fifth Element, Kiss of the Dragon, Bandidas, The Transporter movies and the upcoming Taken, starring Liam Neeson. Kamen has enjoyed a writing partnership with the prolific French producer and director Luc Besson for 14 years.

“We are thrilled to have Robert on the Gatchaman team. His commitment to creating strong characters, as well as his vast experience in the action genre, make him a perfect fit for this groundbreaking animated movie,” Southerland said

Based on the successful Japanese anime franchise created by Tatsuo Yoshida (Speed Racer) in 1972, Gatchaman revolves around a team of five young superhero ninjas who must save the world from alien occupation. With over 200 TV episodes, Gatchaman has delighted fans around the world for more than 30 years. The property’s popularity in the U.S. stems from domestic versions of the show, including Battle of the Planets and G-Force.

An era has ended. Kellogg’s has announced it will no longer market it’s sugared cereals to children.

Kellogg’s also said it would stop using licensed characters (like Shrek and Spongebob) and branded toys to promote its products, according to today’s New York Times.

Will Toucan Sam (Froot Loops) and Dig 'em Frog (Smacks) soon go the way of Sugar Pops Pete? Stay Tuned!

No. Once again CB over-reacts.

Quote:
The company said it won't promote foods in TV, radio, print or Web site ads that reach audiences at least half of whom are under age 12 unless a single serving of the product meets these standards:

-No more than 200 calories.

-No trans fat and no more than 2 grams of saturated fat.

-No more than 230 milligrams of sodium, except for Eggo frozen waffles.

-No more than 12 grams of sugar, not counting sugar from fruit, dairy and vegetables.

Kellogg said it would reformulate products to meet these criteria or stop marketing them to children under 12 by the end of 2008. (emphasis mine-N.)
.
.
.
Globally, 50 percent of the products Kellogg markets to children do not meet the criteria, said Mark Baynes, Kellogg's chief marketing officer. A third of the cereals it markets to children in the U.S. fall outside standards.

Pop-Tarts and Fruit Loops don't meet the criteria, though most cereals fall inside the calorie guideline, Baynes said. Meeting the sugar and sodium standards could be the most challenging.

Yeah OK, Toucan Sam's in trouble, but Tony should be safe.

Disney To Halt DVD Sequels

The Walt Disney Co. will no longer produce direct-to-video sequels of its animated features, according to Disney watcher Jim Hill. Hill, who has had a hit-and-miss record in reporting on inside decisions at the company, said that Sharon Morrill, president of DisneyToon Studios, has been forced to step down as part of the decision to shut down the group that produces the DVD sequels. Prior to Disney's acquisition of Pixar, Pixar executives Steve Jobs and John Lasseter had publicly complained about the quality of the sequels, maintaining that they undercut the value of the original features. Disney executives had responded that the sequels had proved to be enormously successful for the studio. According to Hill, Lasseter made the decision to halt further production of the DVD sequels and fire Morrill after viewing a "work-in-progress version" of The Tinkerbell Movie, which Hill described as "an awful mess." Hill said that Lasseter complained to Disney chief Robert Iger that the movie was "virtually unwatchable." As a direct result of that meeting, Hill wrote, "some $30 million worth of animation had to be scrapped."
