Via Variety:

A trio of toon veterans are launching Frederator Films as an indie feature film company with a mission to produce 2-D animated genre movies budgeted below $20 million.

Fred Seibert's partnered with Kevin Kolde and Eric Gardner, with all three acting as producers on the projects. Seibert's the former president of Hanna-Barbera and longtime producer via Frederator Studios, which debuted a decade ago with "Oh Yeah! Cartoons" for Cartoon Network; that show spun off "Cow & Chicken," "Powerpuff Girls" and "Dexter's Laboratory," and Frederator followed with "The Fairly OddParents," "ChalkZone" and "My Life as a Teenage Robot" for Nickelodeon.

Kolde ran Spumco, the banner of John Kricfalusi ("Ren & Stimpy"), for more than a decade, while Gardner is the topper at Panacea Entertainment, a talent management and production company with clients including Donny Osmond, Richard Belzer, Paul Shaffer, the Sex Pistols, Elvira and members of the Rolling Stones.

Seibert told Daily Variety that the new banner can take advantage of 21st century technology to develop offbeat content into feature films.

"Fred is the master at identifying voids in the marketplace and filling them with paradigm-shifting content," Gardner said. "There has been a dearth of both 2-D and genre animated feature product, which Frederator Films will be rectifying." Pics will be aimed at young males.

First projects from the shingle:

* "Samurai Jack," a feature version of the Cartoon Network skein. The creator, Genndy Tartakovsky, is attached to write and direct.

* "The Neverhood," a claymation feature based on the DreamWorks videogame of the same name. Doug TenNapel, who created the game, is aboard to write and direct.

* "The Seven Deadly Sins," a hip-hop project with Don King hired as the first voice actor.

YAY!

The non-Disney movie that got more DTV sequels than Disney's own movies is finally finished.

From The Animation Guild's blog:

Quote:
The Land Before Time, after a nineteen-year run at the studio, has now shuddered. One theatrical, thirteen or fourteen direct-to-video features, and one season of half-hour shows. Finished.

Paul Dini on Board Imagi Animation Studios' “Gatchaman”

Hong Kong (September 21, 2007)– Paul Dini has been signed to collaborate on the screenplay for Imagi Animation Studios' upcoming CG-animated motion picture, Gatchaman. Announcement was made by Francis Kao, Co-CEO & Chief Creative Officer.

“We are excited to have Paul on our talented Gatchaman team,” said Kao. “His extensive background in animation and superhero comics will contribute greatly to this ambitious action movie.”

“The original series was one of the classics of early anime, and the film will be very true to the Japanese source material,” said Dini. “As a studio, Imagi is constantly breaking the boundaries of animated adventure. Not only are their action sequences amazing, but their characters are driven, complex and play for life-or-death stakes. It's a great environment for a writer with a rather dark take on animation.”

Writer-producer Paul Dini's career spans animation (Batman: The Animated Series), television (Lost) and comics (Detective, The World's Greatest Superheroes). The winner of multiple Emmy, Eisner and Writers Guild of America Awards, Dini is also currently masterminding the DC Comics 2007 weekly series "Countdown." His creations Jingle Belle and Mutant, Texas continue to appear frequently from Dark Horse, Oni Press and other publishers. Dini and his wife, magician Misty Lee, have also launched a popular series of Internet shorts featuring their puppet creation, Little Rashy.

Gatchaman is based on the successful Japanese franchise created in the early 1970s by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida. Aired in the U.S. as Battle of the Planets and G-Force, the TV series soon became one of the top syndicated shows.

Scheduled for release in early 2009, Gatchaman is a big, effects-rich movie set in a future world grappling with environmental and technological issues. The story focuses on five reluctant heroes whose remarkable genetic code makes them Earth's only hope of defeating extra-terrestrial invaders.

Kevin Munroe (TMNT) is the director of Gatchaman, being produced by Lynne Southerland.

ANN Link
In an interview with the Associated Press news service, Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki has confirmed that a new television series of the action franchise is in production now. The next series will be shown on the American cable channel Spike TV in the first months of 2008.
the AP article wrote:
Having finally slayed Justice at the end of series one, Afro "loses his way, gets tired of all the killing," Okazaki said. The series, he said, follows Afro as he finally "wakes up to his destiny, which is to be the world's No. 1 warrior."

And Afro's new enemy is an alluring female warrior, according to Okazaki.

"Seduction and violence -- those are musts for American TV," he said.

The 2007 Golden Globe nominations are out, but there really isn't much animation-wise, with Bee Movie, Ratatouille and The Simpsons Movie up for "Best Animated Film" (the only animation category, btw) and the inclusion of the animated Persepolis in the "Best Foreign Language Film" category.

Although this could be a harbinger of the yet-to-be-announced Oscar nominations.

Ask Judge Doom: no toon can resist the old “Shave-and-a-Haircut” gag. But when plans went around Hollywood for a sequel to the 1988 classic Who Framed Roger Rabbit? a lot of powerful people suddenly realized it would take more than the promise of “Two-bits” for Roger to come busting through the door.

Now, nearly twenty years after Roger Rabbit first exploded onto the big screen, producer Frank Marshall told MTV News that he’s still “open” to the possibility of another film, derailed in the mid-90s because of what would have then been cost-prohibitive special effects.

But don’t hate Roger for the fact that the movie didn’t get made in the first place. He’s not expensive…he’s just drawn that way.

“It came pretty close. We shot a test. We had a script. But unfortunately, we didn’t have computer generated animation quite yet - it was just too expensive,” Marshall explained of the untitled sequel project, Roger Rabbit 2. “If you think about it, in the original movie there’s really only 48 minutes of animation and in the new movie - or in that movie - he was in everything. So it went from 48 minutes of animation to over 100 minutes of animation.

“I remember we shot the test to try and see how much we could do with digital props - We weren’t even into digital characters yet,” Marshall continued. “The idea was to see what we could do with digital props as opposed to what we did in the original movie where everything was puppeted [sic] - all the props were puppeted by strings and wires and poles.”

For the first time ever, Marshall also revealed details of the plot of Roger Rabbit 2, and if you thought Toontown was a trip, you should have seen where they were sending Roger next.

“New York!” Marshall enthused of the setting for the second film. “Roger was a song and dance man in New York City [when he] discovered that he wanted to be in the movies and so he came across the country. I remember there being a big dance number. He came out with a troupe of sort of Busby Berkeley dancers on a train and they got to Hollywood and he and Baby Herman moved in together. And that’s when he met Eddie Valiant.”

Sounds too good to pass up, especially now that studios like Pixar exist (and under Disney no less), to help with Computer Animation. So ok, Mr. Marshall, what if we say “P-p-p-p-p-please!”

“Definitely,” Marshall playfully responded. “I’ll put in a call to [Pixar chief John] Lasseter after I hang up.”

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Walt Disney Studios previewed 10 animated movies on Monday that it will release during the next four years, including further installments in the "Toy Story" and "Cars" series and two new fairy tales.

With the exception of "Wall.E," a robot love story opening on June 28, and "The Princess and the Frog," a hand-drawn animated fairy tale set in New Orleans and due to open Christmas 2009, the remaining eight movies will be made in digital 3-D.

"We're excited to be pushing the boundaries of 3-D and computer technology to tell our stories in the best possible way," said John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios.

Digital 3-D still requires moviegoers to wear geeky glasses, but the left- and right-eye images are calibrated so finely that most viewers experience no headache or eyestrain.

The first Disney digital 3-D movie for release is "Bolt," the story of a dog of the same name who thinks he has superhero powers. John Travolta gives voice to Bolt while hit teen singer/actress Miley Cyrus is voicing Bolt's owner Penny in the movie, due to open on November 26.

"Up," the story of an unlikely 78-year-old adventurer and his 8-year-old sidekick, is due to be released on May 29, 2009. "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" are due to be re-released in digital 3-D on October 2, 2009 and February 12, 2010 respectively, while "Toy Story 3" is due to hit screens on June 18, 2010.

All the original cast from the previous "Toy Story" films, including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack, are returning for the third film, which picks up with Andy grown up and about the head off to college.

The classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Rapunzel," about a girl trapped in a tower whose long golden hair is the only way for anyone to climb up to her, will be released at Christmas 2010.

Next comes "Newt," a story of the last two blue-footed newts on the planet that aims to show that love is not a science, which is due to hit screens in summer 2011.

Another new original fairy tale, "The Bear and the Bow" -- an action-adventure about a royal family in rugged and mythic Scotland -- is slated to open Christmas 2011 starring the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson.

"Cars 2," in which Lightning McQueen and his best friend Mater bid to take on the world's fastest cars, is due for release in summer 2012. "King of Elves," based on a 1953 short story by Phillip K. Dick, will hit screens at Christmas 2012.

Fox Animation has optioned Bruce Zick's young-adult book "The Anubis Tapestry: Between Twilights."

Fox plans a loose adaptation of the novel, originally published in 2006, which kicks off when a mummy's curse condemns Dr. George Henry's spirit to the Egyptian Underworld. While trying to free him, Henry's son Chance plumbs the depths of the Underworld and encounters a variety of monsters.

Zick is no stranger to the world of film animation. As an artist, he has worked on such projects as "Finding Nemo," "The Road to El Dorado" and "A Bug's Life." He also penciled for Marvel on 10 issues of "Thor" and has produced comics for Dark Horse.
