I don't know why I referred to it as being better than maple syrup, but anyway . . .

Two years ago, Mike Judge (Of Beavis and Butthead, King of the Hill, and voice-of-Kenny-in-the-South-Park-Movie fame) and Don Hertzfeldt (of Rejected fame. Among others. I highly suggest Ah L'amour and Genre.) teamed up and put together The Animation Show, a collection of short animated films made by independant studios. This incarnation featured Rejected, as it was Hertzfeldt's latest project at the time.

It's been two years since then, and Don Hertzfeldt has been hard at work on The Meaning of Life, a 12 minute short. For those of you that don't know how he works, he does almost everything himself. That is, he draws every frame, and then proceeds to FILM every frame HIMSELF. This man is an intense animator. His latest project, like all of his others, uses NO computer effects. This one includes a shot involving planets and such moving about, and he had to use mirrors and crazy lighting changes. If he had mis-timed even one frame of this 45 second shot, he would have had to do the entire thing over again. (45 seconds * 24 frames/second = about 1080 frames)

For anyone that has ever liked a cartoon, this man's work is one of the things that can show you the SOUL of animation, if you pay attention to the skill that goes in to it, rather than the content itself.

Granted, I have not yet SEEN The Meaning of Life. But the reviews say that he's outdone himself, and from what I've seen, he's only gotten better with time.

So where can you see it? And why did I go into a description of The Animation Show, which was 2 whole years ago?

Need I answer that?

Ok, I will, because I'm enjoying myself ^_^

Mike Judge and Don Hertzfeldt have teamed up yet again, to bring us the second installment of The Animation Show. It includes such independant animated shorts as Rock Fish done by Blur Studios, a short by Billy Plympton that was nominated for an Academy Award, and, of course, Hertzfeldt's Meaning of Life.

Where can you see it? Well, hopefully you live in a densely populated area, as this is the type of thing that only comes to independant, artsy-type movie theaters that can only support themselves in densely populated and/or artsy areas. Check out http://www.animationshow.com/ to see if it's playing near you.

I'll be seeing it this weekend. Turns out I have a lot more friends that enjoy quality animation than I thought. Everyone I've mentioned it to is excited by the prospect. I'll let everyone know what I think afterwards.

Hope most of you can get at least the option to see this. And I felt that without Spookmonkey being around, someone had to alert the masses regarding this type of project.

I just got back from seeing The Animation Show. Like, just tonight.

And it was incredibly cool. The only one that I didn't like at all was FEDS. The animatiuon in it was just painful to my eyes, personally. But Hello, Rockfish, and Meaning of Life are beautiful. Don Hertzfeltd's animation is smoother in this one than ever before. Hello would make ANY shy guy feel bold. There's also a short that involves a guy that trades his soul or shadow for riches, and it's told without words, and is beautiful. Then there's Ward 13 that is some of the best stop-motion animation I've ever seen, and is also hysterical. All of the little things in it make it so complete, well thought out, and clever.

The people I was with, who are by NO means NEARLY as geek about animation as I am, also thoroughly enjoyed it.

So basically, if you can, make every effort to go see it. It's worth your time.
