Um...could anyone shed light on what happened to Goku at the end of GT? With the sleeping etc? I mean, I actually like GT whatever you guys say Smile I liked how at the end Pan had her own Grandson called Goku and he was wearing Goku's kid uniform Smile

I liked it but I didn't get it...

here's an interesting tidbit that I found while doing a bit of research on the Devil...

According to Old Prussian mythology, Picullus is the god of the underworld, who came to be identified with the prince of hell. The Old Prussian word pickuls means 'devil'.

So, while I haven't read any evidence that shows that Akira Toriyama ever studied old Prussian mythology, the similarity between the names Picullus and of Dragonball's resident lord of evil Picollo are astounding none the less...

again, just an interesting little tidbit... the longer I've been a fan of Dragonball, the more interesting correlations to religion I find...

I was watching Dragon Ball on Thursday, and something dawned on me. See, we're studying Buddhism in school right now. And there were 2 things that just sort of HIT me. First, Tien has a third eye that alows him to see certain things that the ordinary person can't. This is exactly like the third eye of Buddha, though not nearly as profound. It's my contention first that Tien is buddhist, and second that this parallel illustrates a certain virtue-ness about him.

Second, when Goku drank the Divine Water, it awoke the sleeping powers within himself. Basically, he found the answer to life's problems within himself, just as the Buddha found the answers to life by searching his own soul. In effect, the Divine Water caused a 'rebirth' of Goku, and it could be argued that because of Goku's superior Karma that he was reborn as a stronger more vailliant person.

It's long been known that Goku, what with the tail and the riding of the cloud, is based on an old oriental story about the monkey prince and such. I just found it super interesting that there are quite a few parallels that can be drawn from the show to origins of some main religions. I suspect that when we move on to Taoism and Confusionism, I'll see even more parallels. And, obviously, when we move on to Shinto, both Inu Yasha and even Rurouni Kenshin will make more sense. Also, now that I think about it, Vash the Stampede acts on quite a few Buddhist principles, what with the not killing anything and the search to be content . . .

So, it would seem, that there is much more ot Dragon Ball than a cute ass kicking kid. Though DBZ is ALL about the ass kicking . . .

Anyone have any thoughts or was this a waste of my time?

Wow........no that isn't a waste of time. You really thought this out, and worded it wery well

It would make a good essay on relationships with religion in TV. Dragonball is art. DBZ is a commerical.

We've moved on to Confusianism, Taoism, Zen Buddhisim, and Shinto, by the way. In Zen, the word for master is roshi. And a lot of Goku's training on the lookout was in the principles of Taoism and Buddhism. And by a lot I mean all.

Shinto or things having to do with it is pretty much in every anime excluding most mech stuff.

Not unless you count Gasaraki... although you're right, most mech stuff tends not to have too much Eastern religion in it... instead, they throw in as much obscure Christian mythology as possible (ie: Evangelion)
