However, he was talking outside of cable channels, like fox.

actually I saw quite a few ads for the theatercal release and a couple for the dvd. you want an anime with no advertising? Escaflowne the Movie. It had NO commercial air time.

Not true...EscaFlowne had several commercials that aired on CN (during the toonami and AS blocks ), The trailers showed some footage of the movies and then said available (insert date here ) at Sam Goody.

Yeah, yeah, great- but what about ads for the theatrical release? That was the discussion point.

Shotgun responses:
1) Lilo and Stitch- $145 million dollars in theatrical release.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within- $32 million.
Why? GOOD STORYWRITING = entertainment for the masses. Cel or CG, doesn't matter.

2) Sinbad vs. Terminator 3? No wonder it didn't sell too many tickets. Whose brilliant idea was that, anyway?

3) Mononoke, Spirited Away and Cowboy Bebop- The US is the secondary market, an afterthought. Those movies made their studios' money in the domestic Japanese release. And anime is a niche market here, no matter how much fans whine about it being underappreciated. That's why they get limited releases.

4) Square, Fox and (whatever the VeggieTales studio was) are dead. Buried under their own mediocrity.

The CG fad will fade, after it kills the cel market thanks to idiots like USA Today perpetuating these dumb theories by "experts" who don't know how to find their asses with both hands and a map. Razz

You have to keep in mind one other thing. With childrens movies, parents take their kids. With PG-13 and above, there is no 'forced, uninterested entity' accompanying those that take the kids. There are alos the parents that take their kids to EVERY kids movie. There's a lot more hype and a lot more remembering-to-actually-go. Teeangers don't really remember that 'Hey, we should go' type deal as much. I'd say this would account for at least a third more in sales.

Which obviously doesn't cover the spread between Lilo and Stitch and Final Fantasy, but whatever.

Also, Terminator 3, 12 years after T2? What the crap is that about? Why are people going to see that?!

Square made a short for the Animatrix, and I'm pretty sure I heard news of Fox making something else too. And Veggietales is a hit with kids. Hell, have you heard the "His Cheeseburger" song? No? Go look it up now. Do it. You won't regret downloading it, I swear.

Sometimes even that isn't enough. Powerpuff Girls, anyone?
I'd like to think that if more animated films were made to tell stories rather than sell toys, the industry would be in better shape. But I'm just cynical in my advancing age. Wink

Sorry, CP. But Square Pictures is closed. "Osiris" was their last project before they folded.
Same with Big Ideas. "Jonah" emptied the bank account. They're done. UFTA!

Fox has/had a deal with Blue Skies ala the Disney/Pixar deal. Blue Skies does the movie, Fox slaps its name on it.

No, you're right about the toy/plot thing. And I just think that Powerpuff Girls has a broader appeal to Girls, who, at the same time, aren't as into animation. That's just my opinion. But the boys that watch the show would be a lot less likely to be all "I WANNA SEE IT!". I know I didn't force myself upon the movie, even though the animation looked crisp (in my eyes, at least) and I watch the show from time to time.

Upon review, I might have overstated a little bit. Big Idea's still in business, but using outsourced animators: http://www.animationnation.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=005307. But they're definitely hurting.

Admittedly, it's about superheroes and TV, but this article has Paul Dini, at the end, asking the same question I'm asking...
Quote:
Conquering prime time would be only a first step. Some question why studios can't market top-quality animated films capable of competing with live-action blockbusters -- and put to rest the notion that animation succeeds by appealing to children without so offending their parents' intelligence that they flee the theater.

"Why does everything have to do with singing animals and princesses?" Dini asks. As for attracting adults, "it can be done. If I were running a studio, I'd tell the marketing department, 'Sell this movie. Get the people who want to see 2 Fast 2 Furious to see it.' It doesn't have to be something that looks good on a child's lunchbox."
