You hear more about Dell failures because Dell sells the most computers in the world.
Everybody should read Consumer Reports' latest issue. They have good looks at technical support from the main computer companies. |

Stay away from HP/Compaq. I have not seen a HP or Compaq that hasn't had a component fail in it.
IBM is okay.
e-machines I have had no problems with.
Dell I have had no problems with.
As for your problem CP, it could be that Windows just choked on something (it's not that hard to do.) Rather than struggle with it, just restore your laptop to it's factory shipped state by using your recovery disc(s). If you don't want to do that you can call Dell tech support and they can reset only select programs by having you type in fun command line stuff. _________________ "Robots don't say 'ye'."

I haven't heard of a toshiba having a problem, to be honest. You know those nice tablet PCs? The ones you can write on and such? I have a computer illiterate friend with one of those and she's had NO problems with it. I've heard multiple people have problems with new Dells though. _________________ anime is teh s uck

A new product should not faulter under proper care. It shouldn't need to be advertised that the tech support is good, because ideally, people shouldn't need the tech support help unless they are nimrods. I'm pissed not because my comptuer failed, but because it failed after only 2 months and I took good care of it in every way, shape, and form. Under those conditions, I shouldn't need tech support, and I'm pissed because I do. _________________ anime is teh s uck

That's actually what initiated the week long period of crashage. I installed sp2, and the next day my computer would not turn on. _________________ anime is teh s uck

as I thought, SP2... sucks
I had had auto updates on, but it started d/ling sp2 crap, which caused issues with my PC, so I reformatted and installed SP1 again, and turned off automatic updates _________________ The problem with America is stupidity. I had Windows XP dual-booting with Linux on my laptop just fine until SP2 came out. After it was installed, it seems to now overwrite the MBR every chance it gets.
I just hope removing SP2 fixes the problem. _________________ Able and Baker is nice. |

I remember hearing something about the Big M getting sued by about 17 states because Windows XP looks for and corrupts Linux partitions. This was over a year ago, back with SP1.
Looks like they're having SP2 go after the MBR now.
Like Tyler, Windows being able to play some of my PC games is the only reason I keep it around. Damn you Microsoft and your DirectX. _________________ "Robots don't say 'ye'."
