The Hollywood Reporter says that Peter Hewitt has come aboard to direct Fox's big-screen live-action/computer-animated adaptation of the long-running Garfield comic strip, and Garfield creator Jim Davis will be producing it! There is no start date for the project.

Fox optioned the feature-film rights to the lasagna-loving, Nermal-hating, Monday-fearing fat cat in December 2001 and hired Toy Story writers Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow to pen the script.

And your point is...?

Just because he's dead doesn't mean they can't find a look-alike (or, should I make that, sound-alike) replacement of Lorenzo Music, just like the guys at Warner Bros. found lots of replacements for Mel Blanc when HE passed away (Bob Bergen is one example). I'm sure Fox will find a replacement soon enough.

besides that, he has been long forgotten (kinda) not as many people could tell the difference in the voices due to the fact garfield and friends has not been shown much lately ( except on nickelodean)

This should be great for nostalga. My dad and I always liked the garfield strips and the books. We shall be hoping for its success since alot of our revisited series to screen have failed (i.e.Rocky and Bullwinkle).

I have many problems with garfield the comic strip. the cartoon and probably the movie will be fine but I want to kill davis for what he turned the strip into.

It's no longer good because he sold out and hasn't drawn the strip since the 5th year. Now a studio does it. Garfield is a prime example of exactly what Bill Waterson didn't want Calvin and Hobbes to be. Hence C&H being hailed by many as the greatest comic strip of all time.

Actually I think C&H and Peanuts are dead even. You gotta give props to the schultz-man for drawing the strip for so long (up until he no longer could hold a pencil actually, literally) by him self. Actually I['d give a slight edge to Schultz for verocity in his love. Watterson had a verocity, but it was directed in a different way.

Garfield is one of those things that just can't fail... Although in the past two years it seems like it's almost always been the same- Garfield on that eternal counter/table joking with John- Odie seems to be going the way of everyone's favorite MIA character Lyman. John hasn't gone on a date with Liz for a long time, no vacations to a badly managed tropical island, and the Christmas strips just aren't what they used to be.

But if they go for a live action version... That'll breathe in new life.

As it is though, Foxtrot 0wnz them all.

Exactly. I really can't stand reading it in my newspaper. Most of the humor is gone. Sad

Right now, Fox Trot, Zits, and Non Sequitor are the best strips currently in production. (Fox Trot and Zits have each had little tributes ot C&H, btw.) And yes, I do have a large amount of respect for Schultz. Over 50 years, by himself. That takes a lot. But I enjoy reading C&H more, and the artwork is better, I think at least. So on priniple, I would put Schultz and Waterson dead even (Shultz did put out merchandise, and the merc. is typically drawn by a studio), but overall I think Waterson comes out ahead.
