Post subject: Where is the best place to buy a laptop from?
|

I think the thread title says it all.
But I'm looking into purchasing a laptop, if you have any suggestions _________________ The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself? |

Just remember to avoid IBooks or anything by apple. They have never folllowed the phrase "bang for your buck'. _________________ I'm getting too old for this. :SNAP: OH GOD, MY HIP! |

The iBook is immune to windows viruses and worms, blocks popups/spyware, is UNIX-level stable, reads and writes Word and Excel files, comes with critically-acclaimed photo and video editing software, MIDI and audio loop music creation software, Quicken, World Book, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4, has a CD burner and a DVD player, built-in ethernet, firewire, USB 2, dialup modem, VGA and S-Video out, wireless 802.11g networking, up to 5 hours of battery life, and is 4.6 pounds.
...And it costs $999.
$949 for college students.
PC Magazine agrees:

the Apple iBook G4 (12-inch) can't be beat—especially for the price. It, too, warrants an Editors' Choice. |

The iBook can't play Half-Life 2. My Inspiron XPS can.
Dell makes good ones- from gaming ones ("desktop replacements") to ultra-cheap-but-bulkier-then-a-better-one types.
Alienware is better than Dell if you want a gaming machine.
This place has Japanese imports. Expensive (more expensive than a gaming laptop) but high quality.

My advice is to have a relative who gets new computer equipment fairly often, then get their old stuff. That's how I ended up with my piece of crap TC1000. Getting a smaller laptop is good since it's more likely to fit in backpacks and whatnot. _________________ Able and Baker is nice. |

DON"T GO DELL.
My Dell Inspiron 9100 crashes almost daily. And it's 3 months old. And I've done nothing that would cause it that much stress. No real gaming aside from flash games. iTunes sometiems crashes it. iTUNES!nnI run a constant firewall and antivirus and scan my computer about every other week for adware and viruses.
Seriously, don't go Dell. Not worth it. _________________ anime is teh s uck

FDD is right!
I got mine in June, and it works great. I can't crank Half-Life 2 all the way up to the max, but I can get damn close. Dell is almost always worth it. _________________ Ice cream has this erotic sense to it- kinda like the one choclate and strawberries have.

I've heard more complaints about brand new Dells than any other brand. I got one anyways. And it pisses me off near daily. I use Firefox, have a great firewall. run Norton and Adaware weekly, and it still crashes once a day, and every now and then decide that it hates windows and won't load it. And it's 3 months old. There is no excuse for that. Seriously, I've done nothing wrong to my machine and it hates me. _________________ anime is teh s uck

Have you called tech support or had one of your friends who knows more about computers than Bill Gates look at it?
There's probably a reason why it hates the world. _________________ Ice cream has this erotic sense to it- kinda like the one choclate and strawberries have.

Tech support? No. Friends that know almost everything there is ot know about computers? Yes. I stumped my school's senior year comp sci majors with the continual crashing of my computer. It's quite the accomplishment considering that its not something I tried to do. They honestyl had no idea what was wrong. _________________ anime is teh s uck

Playing devil's advocate:
You hear more about Dell failures because Dell sells the most computers in the world.
Everybody should read Consumer Reports' latest issue. They have good looks at technical support from the main computer companies. _________________ My old sig was too long. |
