Post subject: Excercise from my Editor (WHY SHOULD I NOT FIRE YOU?)
Simply put, I'm different. Hence, my strip is different. JBD does not use the same punchline. If I do use a recurring gag I incorporate it into the story. My continuity does not detract from the enjoyment of the single strip, but it does reach out to my regular readers and form a bond with them.
It's not about art, though I have developed my art to a point where not only does it look intentional, at this point it is.
I'm a perfectionist. I edit compulsively. I'm willing to work for a consensus, but never compromise. You'll never have anything half-assed from me. Why? Because either the joke soars or it crashes and burns. Either or, no middle ground. And the jokes that crash... well I'm not stupid enough to try and get paid for them.
I'm a student of the game. That sounds pretentious, and hell I am. Garfield sucks. The Family Circus sucks. Fuck sprite comics. Fuck micropayments. Peanuts, Calvin & Hobbes, Penny Arcade, PVP, Dilbert, Help Desk, I count them as my influences and I try to learn from, overcome, what I see as their shortcomings.
Can I make a living off this? Hell if I know, but it's not what I'm concerned with. I'm a storyteller. I'm a joke teller. And I'm driven enough that to facilitate those aspects that by proxy I've stumbled into being an artist.
