Adding to the 3-D motion picture mess, we may be seeing a live action, and 3-D version of Ghost in the Shell.

We already have one of those.

It's called The Matrix.

Someday, Disney hopes its princes will come.

The entertainment giant, which has made billions catering to the princess fantasies of young girls, plans to relaunch Toon Disney as Disney XD as a cable channel targeting boys. The move, under wraps for more than a year, is an attempt by the company to capture a market that has long eluded it.

Starting in February, Disney XD will seek to become to young dudes what the Disney Channel, with its lineup of tweeny bopper programs such as "High School Musical," "Hannah Montana" and "Camp Rock" is to girls. Disney XD, aiming squarely at boys ages 6 to 14, will offer original action-adventure and comedy series, movies, animation and sports-themed shows developed with Walt Disney Co.-owned ESPN.

"What was clear to me, and clear to us, is we had a huge opportunity to create content that were boys' favorites," said Rich Ross, president of Disney Channels Worldwide.

Tween boys, ages 9 to 14, account for about $50 billion in spending worldwide, said Greg Kahn, senior vice president of strategic insights for media buying firm Optimedia International USA Inc.. Advertisers are eager to reach these young consumers, not just snag a portion of their disposable income, but to build a loyalty that they hope will extend into even more free-spending teen years, he said.

But the Disney Channel has struggled for years to find the right programming formula to lure boys, who tend to gravitate to Viacom's Nickelodeon and Time Warner's Cartoon Network -- that is, when they're not spending time playing video games. The Disney Channel's popular live-action shows, from its early tween phenomenon, "Lizzie McGuire," through its current pop-culture sensation, "Hannah Montana," mainly attract girls. Efforts to bring in more boys, through male-led series such as "Even Stevens" or "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody," still haven't succeeded enough to close the gender gap between female and male viewers. Animation, traditionally a draw for boys, has been a struggle for Disney Channel, although its newest series, "Phineas and Ferb," appears to be building a strong male following. But so far, the network has failed to produce a blockbuster to compete with Nickelodeon's "SpongeBob SquarePants;" or match the guy-centric focus of Cartoon Network, which one ad-buyer described as the "ESPN" of animation.

"You're fighting the brand perception, the very, very strong brand equity that's been in the marketplace for many, many years," Kahn said of the Disney Channel. "It would almost require a complelely separate effort to reach tween boys, with a completely different name somehow associated with the Disney property, to reach these tween males."

None of this is news to Ross, who, with his executive team, spent more than a yearwith focus groups pondering the eternal verities: "What do boys want?"

The answer, perhaps not surprisingly, is that boys want it all. "What we heard, loud and clear, is they expect from Disney this broad array," Ross said, with programs running the gamut from animation to action-adventure to comedy. "They expect from Disney the whole thing, including movies." In short, tween boys are looking for more than a show or two wedged in the midst of the musical theater-inspired programs that have come to define the Disney Channel. They want, Disney says, a channel they can call their own.

"They want a place, essentially a headquarters for them where their favorite content exists, that has this broad array of shapes and sizes and tenors and complexities, and treats them with the respect that Disney Channel treats all kids, and the girls are fanatical about," Ross said.

Instead of tinkering with what works -- The Disney Channel, which has spawned two billion-dollar creative franchises in High School Musical and Hannah -- Ross elected to relaunch a struggling cable asset, Toon Disney, into this destination for boys.

Toon Disney pulls only 10% to 15% of the viewers of Disney Channel, despite the cable network's reach into nearly 70 million U.S. households. The Nielsen ratings reflect its hodgepodge lineup of geriatric kids shows, such as as "Power Rangers Jungle Fury" and recycled animated offerings such as "Batman: The Animated Series," and "Jackie Chan Adventures," and movies.

As the rebranded Disney XD, the ad-supported cable network will boast original series, such as "Aaron Stone," a live-action show about a video game virtuoso who leads a secret double life as a crime fighter. The show boils down to a male fantasy version of "Hannah Montana," in which an ordinary teen leads a double life as a rock star.

Former "The Wonder Years" child star Fred Savage directed the pilot for "Mongoose & Luther," a mock documentary series about two best friends who set out to become the world's greatest skateboarders. The project was created by Matt Dearborn and Tom Burkhard, who worked on Disney Channel's "Even Stevens."

Established animated series, from "Phineas and Ferb," to "Batman: The Animated Series," will air on Disney XD alongside new offerings, such as RoboDz, a short-form series developed in partnership with Toei Animation Co. Ltd. of Japan, in which robotic life forms defend Earth from space invaders.

Plans for an online presence and mobile offerings are also in the works.

"We know we have a huge opportunity to take that asset and make it every bit as powerful as Disney Channel or Playhouse Disney," Ross said.

Superheroes to Be Recast for Japan
By GEORGE GUSTINES, NY Times

The superheroes of Marvel Entertainment have been turned into toys, cartoons and, perhaps most profitably, live action films like “Iron Man” and the Spider-Man series. Now they are being adapted again — this time specifically for the Japanese market.

Marvel is teaming up with Madhouse, a renowned Japanese animation studio, to develop new versions of its characters for four anime series that will premiere in spring 2010 in Japan.

Rather than simply importing American characters and concepts, said Simon Philips, president of Marvel International, the goal is to create “something that is part of the fabric of society.” This means reimagining the back stories and redesigning the look of Marvel’s stable of characters to reflect Japanese culture. “It will create an entire parallel universe for Marvel,” he said.

“Marvel today is so open-minded,” said Jungo Maruta, the president and chief executive of Madhouse, through his interpreter, Alex Yeh, the chief operating officer of the studio, during a recent meeting in New York. “Marvel gives creators freedom to fly.”

Madhouse was founded in 1972 and its talent pool includes Yoshiaki Kawajiri, the director of “Vampire Hunter D;” Santa Inoue, who created the “Tokyo Tribes” manga series; and Satoshi Kon, the director of “Paprika,” a critically acclaimed animated film about a therapeutic device that allows patients’ dreams to be experienced.

“We are very excited to be involved,” Mr. Yeh said as he showed a handful of manga-influenced drawings of Iron Man. Mr. Yeh said working on the Marvel characters is different from his past experiences. “Although they say, ‘I want Japanese anime,’ it’s not what they actually want. They want a hybrid between Japanese and Western animation.”

The parent company of Madhouse is Index, a content provider for mobile phones, which is another area Marvel is interested in pursuing. The anime series will be adapted into comics and will be available for downloading on cellphones, Mr. Philips said, a popular way teenagers in Japan tap into media.

Press release!
Quote:
Madhouse is currently in production on the first of four new series (12 x 30 minutes), which are scheduled to launch in spring 2010. The initial series will feature characters including Iron Man and Wolverine, among others, and Madhouse will ultimately look to adapt the entire Marvel Universe, creating in essence a whole new character base for Marvel.

“We are incredibly excited to have this full collaboration with Marvel to create a completely new world that has never been done before in the Marvel Universe. This will be the first time there will be a full Japanese anime style for Marvel, and the Madhouse creative team is fully engaged to bring this to a worldwide audience,” said Jungo Maruta, president and CEO of Madhouse Inc.

The Marvel anime series will debut on ANIMAX, the first and largest 24-hour network dedicated to anime.

Summit Entertainment will release Astro Boy in North America on Friday, October 23, 2009, it was announced today by Rob Friedman, Co-Chairman and CEO of Summit Entertainment, and Erin Corbett, President of Imagi Studios U.S. Summit and Imagi are putting together the final details on a marketing plan designed to reach both the family movie-going audience and adult fans of Astro Boy alike. Plan includes a commitment from a major fast food restaurant partner as well as alliances in the areas of toys, games, books and others, soon to be announced.

Produced by Imagi Studios, the CG-animated motion picture will bow on over 3,000 screens across North America. International release dates for the film are to be announced soon.

“We are pleased to bring the exceptional world of Astro Boy to the big screen for movie-goers in North America,” said Friedman. “We have lined up some key marketing partners for the film and our October date allows us to put the film out at the right time enabling our partners to reach their targeted audiences with on-going marketing programs tied to the film.”

“A beloved icon for over half-a-century, this marks Astro Boy’s first time on the big screen, making our film one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year,” stated Corbett. “We’re thrilled to be bringing this remarkable and enduring property to fans – both old and new – as a grand-scale action-filled adventure with cutting-edge CG technology.”

Astro Boy’s all-star cast features the voices of Academy Award®-winning actor Nicolas Cage, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy and Eugene Levy with Freddie Highmore in the title role. David Bowers (Flushed Away) is directing Astro Boy from a screenplay written by Timothy Harris (Trading Places, Kindergarten Cop), with Maryann Garger producing.

The iconic character Astro Boy has found global popularity since his creation in the early 1950s by Japan’s Osamu Tezuka, known as the “god of manga” and “father of anime”, and has been the hero of three acclaimed animated television series aired around the world.

Set in the future, Imagi Studio’s Astro Boy is a classic superhero origin story about a young robot with incredible powers, created by a brilliant scientist, and his adventure-filled journey in search of his identity and destiny, taking him into a netherworld of robot gladiators before he returns to save Metro City.

Summit Entertainment, which entered into a global alliance with Imagi Studios earlier this year, will distribute Astro Boy worldwide except for Imagi’s reserved territories of Japan, Hong Kong and China.

Turner Broadcasting and MGM Worldwide Television are producing a new 26 episode half-hour animated series for MGM's Pink Panther franchise to air on Cartoon Network channels worldwide in fall 2009.

The show is being produced jointly by MGM and Rubicon, Jordan's animation, edutainment and multimedia company. Production of the series is currently taking place in both Los Angeles and Amman, Jordan.

"The Pink Panther character is iconic and instantly recognized around the globe," said Gary Marenzi, Co-President, MGM Worldwide Television. "In addition to Cartoon Network's interest in the series, international buyers have been especially eager for us to produce another Pink Panther series and we are happy to partner with Rubicon on meeting the worldwide demand with this new series."

Pink Panther & Pals is a 26 episode animated TV series featuring the Pink Panther as a rambunctious teenager who, along with his friends, gets into all sorts of mischievous capers and hilarious escapades.

"The character is drawn a little younger to depict the Pink Panther as a teenager, although he will be instantly recognizable with his signature walk and devil-may-care attitude," said David Corbett, Exec Producer.

Favorite characters from the original series such as Ant and Aardvark and new characters Horse and Dog join the Pink Panther in his daily adventures. In every episode the Pink Panther will interact with his pompous and problematic arch-nemesis Big Nose -- who always tries to spoil the party and stop the Pink Panther from doing what he does best -- having fun.

The musical score and comedy themes will be reprised from the original Pink Panther theatrical shorts and TV series and will be familiar and recognizable to legions of Pink Panther fans the world over.

MGM plans to support the new Pink Panther & Pals show with a dedicated licensing and merchandising initiative targeting licensed apparel, stationery and back to school, toys, publishing and interactive games. The retail launch of licensed merchandise is targeted for late 2009.

"American Dad" exec producers Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman have sealed new overall deals with 20th Century Fox TV.

The pacts come as Fox officially greenlights a fifth season of "Dad." The show is in its fourth year, but the lengthy timetable for animated skeins usually requires an early pickup. Barker and Weitzman are locked to continue as showrunners on "Dad," which comes from the Seth MacFarlane hit-making factory.

"It was one of our goals going into the summer to make sure their services were secured," said 20th Century Fox TV chairman Dana Walden. "The show has evolved creatively under their leadership. And when you find a tentpole player like Seth, one of the critical elements in supporting their companies is locking up the services of the people they depend on, they trust."

One thing has changed, however: Barker and Weitzman -- who until now have operated as writing partners under their Underdog Prods. shingle -- have separated and signed individual pacts with the studio.

The duo said the split was amicable, and they're still working together as before. Now, however, their careers are no longer tied together, allowing them to "explore the single life."

"It's like a husband and wife divorcing, you still love the child and are responsible for raising this kid," Barker said.

Production on the fourth season of "Dad" is wrapping up, just as the show's writing team is starting to break stories for the show's fifth season. Barker and Weitzman said they're waiting to see how next week's election might impact the show.

"The election will probably cause us to come up with a whole new dynamic," Barker said. "We're excited for what that could mean for Stan. It'll be interesting to see him on the losing side of things."

Meanwhile:

Hank Hill has sold his last tank of propane: Fox animation stalwart "King of the Hill" is calling it a day at the end of this season.
Show is wrapping up production after 13 years and nearly 260 episodes.

Complete finality is never certain when it comes to Fox animation. The net actually has canceled "King of the Hill" in the past only to turn around and pick up more episodes later on. And shows like "Family Guy" and "Futurama" have also been revived after cancellation.

But for now, the show's staff was informed of the network's decision Thursday not to pick up any more episodes.

"We've been here before," said exec producer John Altschuler. "When i'ts time for 'King of the Hill' to go, it will go. But I think with the ratings this good, and with quality that doesn't seem to be diminishing, it would be very odd for 'King of the Hill' not to keep going."

No series finale had been planned for "King," but that's by design, Altschuler said. Had a series finale run when "King" previously halted production, the show might not have come back, he said. And the same is true this time, he added.

Nonetheless, if this really is "King's" swan song, then Altschuler said he's at peace with the decision.

"It's been a great run," he said.

Viewers will still see original episodes of "King" for some time, however. Because of erratic episodic orders in recent years -- as well as fall football-related preemptions -- the show's production cycles don't coincide with the traditional TV season. Episodes airing right now, for example, are actually from the show's 12th cycle.

Episodes from the 13th cycle don't bow until February, which means Fox will still have original episodes left over to use next TV season as well, if needed.

"King" is the second longest running primetime animated skein in history, behind only "The Simpsons." And it's currently the second longest running comedy in primetime -- again, behind only "The Simpsons."

Created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels as a companion piece to "The Simpsons," the 20th Century Fox TV laffer first bowed on Jan. 12, 1997.

In its financial statement for the third quarter of 2008 which ran from July 1 to September 30, 4Kids Entertainment has revealed on Monday that it will end its programming on the Fox Network at the end of this year. The current seventh season of 4Kids TV's Saturday morning block on Fox includes episodes of Kirby: Right Back At Ya! and Sonic X. Fox had originally scheduled the block to run through September of next year. To back out of the contract, 4Kids had to settle with Fox for an undisclosed amount.

The relationship between 4Kids and Fox started in 2002, when the block launched under the name FoxBox. The block has aired numerous anime, including One Piece, Shaman King, and Tokyo Mew Mew. Last year, 4Kids signed a similar agreement with The CW Network to run original and licensed cartoons over a five-hour Saturday morning block and sell ads to be aired during that time. According to 4Kids CEO Alfred E. Kahn, the dissolution of the Fox contract will allow 4Kids "to focus resources" on its CW programming going into 2009.

4Kids' quarterly results included an increase in net revenues to US$17.8 million, compared to US$12.2 million over the same term last year. About US$7.3 million of the new revenue came from sales of the Chaotic trading card game. However, 4Kids still experienced a net loss of US$5.3 million (compared to US$4.2 million last year).

For the year to date, net revenues were US$49.4 million, up from US$39.1 million, but net losses have also increased. In the first nine months of 2007, 4Kids lost US$6.6 million; this year, that figure was up to US$17.2 million. Kahn attributed this to "the increase in selling, general, and administrative expenses and cost of goods sold in the Trading Card and Game Distribution Segment of our business, coupled with decreased licensing and broadcast revenues." However, he said he was confident that in the last quarter of the year, the company will return to profitability, and that the outlook for 2009 will be positive as sales and licensing revenue related to Chaotic, Dinosaur King, and other 4Kids series continue to increase. 4Kids also renegotiated the terms of "representation agreement" for the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, and now holds the licensing, broadcast, and merchandise rights to it through 2015.

Marvel's Thor is the latest hero from the comics and entertainment company to get the cartoon treatment.

Marvel Animation is developing and self-producing a 26 half-hour episode series based on its long-running comic book, with the series targeted to launch in fall 2010, following Marvel's live-action feature "Thor," which bows in 2010.

The animated series will follow Thor, the Norse god of thunder, as he defends his mythical home of Asgard against fantastical villains, fiendish hordes, winged creatures and angry giants. The show will take place in various worlds -- from mountainous landscapes to places of icy mists and fiery voids -- and will include many of the comic's supporting cast, including Balder the Brave, the Warriors Three and Thor's evil adopted brother, Loki.

Marvel president of animation Eric Rollman said the series is part of the company's plan to follow each live-action movie with an animated series and "offer a continued awareness in the marketplace." It already is in production on cartoon series "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes," which will be available for broadcast in 2011, in time for Marvel Studios' releases of the live-action "The First Avenger: Captain America" and "The Avengers."

Universal Pictures International Entertainment, the overseas division of NBC Universal, has agreed to take a majority interest in Dentsu Inc.’s anime company Geneon.

At one point the largest distributor of anime in the United States, Geneon stopped distributing titles here in late 2007, after Dentsu reported losses of about $44 million in its anime business. Currently, other domestic anime distributors such as Funimation have licensed some Geneon titles for American distribution.

The Universal-Geneon agreement has Universal’s international division owning 80.1% of interests in Geneon, which will be merged with Universal Pictures Japan. The deal will be completed in early 2009, and for now results only in Japanese DVD distribution of titles Geneon owns. Universal Pictures Japan and Geneon have been working together since March, with Geneon distributing new Universal releases in Japan.

A new series for Fullmetal Alchemist is scheduled to premiere in Japan this April, according to a teaser video on the official website.

It's unknown (to me at least) whether this is a do-over or a continuation from the first series, but information will be provided in the January issue of Square Enix's Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine (where the original manga is still serialized) on December 12th. The same issue will also include a poster with a key visual image.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Film Critics Association has gone populist on its picks for best movies of 2008, choosing the animated smash “WALL-E” as No. 1 and the Batman blockbuster “The Dark Knight” as runner-up on Tuesday.

The late Heath Ledger won the critics group’s supporting-actor honor for his turn as the Joker in “The Dark Knight,” while Penelope Cruz was chosen for supporting actress in the Woody Allen romance “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” as well as her role in the drama “Elegy.”

The critics’ picks are one of the early film honors in Hollywood’s long awards season, which continues Thursday with nominations for the Golden Globes, the second-biggest ceremony after the Academy Awards.

“WALL-E” and “The Dark Knight” were unusually commercial choices for the critics, whose past best-picture winners have tended toward smaller films such as 2007’s “There Will Be Blood” and other recipients that include “Letters From Iwo Jima,” “Brokeback Mountain” and “Sideways.”

With “WALL-E” as their best-picture winner, the critics chose the war documentary “Waltz With Bashir” as their top animated film.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced the 2008 Golden Globe Awards nominations, to be presented on January 11, 2009.
Relevant to our interests, the nominees for Best Animated Film are Pixar's Wall-E, Disney's Bolt and Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda, with the original songs "Down to Earth" from Wall-E (performed by Peter Gabriel) and "I Thought I Lost You" from Bolt (performed by Miley Cyrus) nominated in their respective category.

Marvel Animation Age has confirmed reports that The Spectacular Spider-Man will swing over to Disney XD in 2009.

The Toon Disney network, which is being rebranded Disney XD in February 2009 in an effort to capture the male market, will be the new home for The Spectacular Spider-Man in 2009. Reports leaked out earlier this week revealing where the critically acclaimed series would be landing for a second season.

The Spectacular Spider-Man, which premiered March 2008 on the Saturday morning block Kids' WB! on The CW, was slated to be moved to a new network in light of 4Kids Entertainment taking over Saturday morning programming for The CW. However, the series remains on The CW 4Kids block for the time being, but will move to Disney XD to premiere new episodes next year. New episodes of The Spectacular Spider-Man will premiere on Disney XD beginning in March 2009. Repeats from the first season are also expected to be featured on the network.

A timeslot and date have not yet been announced for The Spectacular Spider-Man's premiere on Disney XD.
