Without pictures now. What defines Hentai? The guy im driving with for work and i are having this discussion. He believes any show with a sexual theme is Hentai even if no nudity is shown. He swears Chobits is a hentai and that Master Roshi from DBZ would be considered a Hentai character. Though from what i have seen from this forum Hentai would be serios porn anime.
I never heard the word before coming to these forums. Enlighten me

Hentai involves nudity. There is a different word to discribe the near hentai shows (ie. Goldenboy) but I can't really think of it right now.

i've noticed that "hentai" is one of those words that's thrown around a lot, but an actual meaning differs from person to person...
my outlook is similar to G-B's in that i'd classify anything containing blatant sex as hentai...in my mind, hentai = porn, but as beefy's posted, there are others who see it differently...
now that it's been brought up, exactly what is a show with "ecchi"-ish tendancies? i've heard that phrase thrown around a lot, and my assumption is this encompasses characters with a perverted/lecherous nature, but is that correct? _________________ "Life's a journey, not a destination..." -Aerosmith ('Amazing')

It's true that everyone defines hentai differently. In my opinion, hentai is any form of graphic sex in anime. Ecchi is anything to do with underwear in anime. _________________ The only truth that realy exists is the truth within the mind of the individual and the way the individual sees the world...

it's exactly like trying to define pornography or what is deemed 'obscene'... sure, we all know what it is, but making the definitive boundaries between art and obscenity has plagued civilization throughout its existance...
just so you know, nudity itself does not deem an anime or manga as hentai, but the gross sexualization of nude characters may (in other words, just because an anime may have a few episodes or scenes that take place in a Japanese communal bath or hot spring (as most do since the era of Tenchi) doesn't mean that it is hentai... but if Tenchi were to have ever crossed the line and start making out with Ryoko or Ayeka in the bath, then yes, it would be hentai)...
Also, the rules in Japan about nudity and pornography in all forms of print and visual media are extremely strict, the largest rule being that all depictions of genitalia, especially when in an "aroused-state" or in the act of penetration, are strictly prohibited and must be censored. This is why Japanese porn (live-action) and hentai (animated/manga) have pixilation, black-boxes, or large blurry areas... And it's been my personal philosophy that if blurry or pixilated boxes ever show up (and in mass quantities), then it is definitely hentai...
...of course, this doesn't work with unedited U.S. releases, but then again, any anime that shows 12-inch cocks is automatically porn to me anyway...

You know if Tenchi would have crossed those lines...hmm, and maybe later toss in his grandfather for support, then as an added bonus for the girls, toss in Ryo-Ohki as a simulator or something. And then, if I don't mind myself saying this, I'd be watching a lot more outta the Tenchi series.
