Oh you wanna talk about unknown anime titles then? Well I got one for you...

Star Ocean EX

...Yes I know it hasn't been dubbed(and most likely never will) you should check it out. It follows very closely to the storyline of the game it was based off of. The pacing is a little slow until about episode 6 when*points to avatar* one of my favorite anime characters of all time comes in. Ashton Anchors, the unluckiest man in the universe, and there are few things that are worse than being possesed by a 2-headed dragon. I've rambled on long enough, I enjoyed it, and so should you. So go out and get it even if the only form out there is coughfansubcough.

Nobi's right about Captain Tylor, it's awesome (off-topic a bit, he was the one who convinced me to shell out the bucks and give it a shot)...very cool, and has a unique feel to it...

likewise, Zechs is right too, I think - Lain is one of the most wicked, sweet, awesome series I've ever seen...so so very cool; and while it's kind of mind-bending, it's also really really enjoyable

and, if Urusei Yatsura counts, I'll say you should check out Maison Ikkoku...a forerunner of Love Hina, and a similarly wacky, endearing story...but 4 times longer, and full of more serious episodes, and 10 zillion times more angst...so addicting...

the rest of the series I've seen are pretty much mainstream...

Something I really need to see more of is Sorceror Hunters. Same creative team as Tylor, about a Saiyuki/Journey to the West-style group of "warriors" who travel around in a world ruled by magic users. They receive orders from the high-muckety-muck "Big Momma" to hunt down and eliminate magicians who misuse their powers or practice "forbidden" forms of magic. What I've seen (first DVD) is pretty funny.

:Oh, and Corey? s-CRY-ed (that's how they're spelling it Rolling Eyes ) is being released by Bandai. :

Hoshi no Koe

It is a Damn good anime even if it only last one episode. The creator did the work alone. No help. None. Nada.

Bono, FAK and I all agree: Read or Die. Very clever, in an Avengers-style spy confrontatation. (That's the Steed and Mrs. Peel Avengers, not the Captain America/Iron Man ones.)

After having the Fansub sit on my hard drive for six months, it's finally great being to own it. Now, if I could only find a place to test the surround sound (as this is one of the highest production value animes I've ever seen as far as animation and sound--think Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust quality).

Something of a riskier recommendation: Gokudo. It's quite juvenile, but if Jay Ward had been Japanese, this would have been "Fractured Fairy Tales". From "The Prince and the Pauper" thru "Journey to the West" and the "Boddistavita" <sp> Embarassed , a bunch of (primarily) eastern folk tales get turned on their ear just for laughs.

I've heard GOOD THINGS about Battle Athletes Victory.

Nadesico didn't get enough time to shine on Cartoon Network, give that a viewing.

A lot of the suggestions here I've heard of, and they're all good, from what I've seen. A good one to see is Hirohiko Araki's Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. And yes, Read or Die is one of the most creatively imaginative OVAs I've seen in a while (last one was Gunsmith Cats).
