MGM vice chairman/COO Chris McGurk admitted on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 that he has discussed a distribution partnership with Pixar Animation Studios during a conference call with financial reporters to discuss MGM's record net income of $60.3 million for the fourth quarter.

McGurk added: "Our film, television, MGM Networks, and home entertainment operations all had a very strong year. Our goal in 2004 is to further accelerate our growth. We look forward to the rest of the year with great confidence."

McGurk added that MGM would be "the best fit" for Pixar because of its worldwide distribution apparatus and because MGM doesn't possess any competitive animated films or family franchises. McGurk said MGM intends "to speak with them again very soon."

McGurk would not comment, however, on whether MGM is looking for more than a distribution deal with Pixar. "…They are an extremely attractive company with a tremendous track record that's obviously complementary to us."

Meanwhile, MGM chairman/CEO Alex Yemenidjian said they will continue pursuing potential cash acquisitions to broaden their core business or diversify their source of revenue with vertical integration.

NOTE: I had to cut out some of this article mainly because it was just pointless promotions for MGM's future projects that had nothing to do with Pixar or the topic of the article. You can see the entire uncut article here at Animation World Network.

He's crazy.
MGM doesn't even distribute their own films internationally; they have Fox do it for them. Rolling Eyes
MGM is a long-shot at best.

Internationally, yeah, but that's not really the concern here. Wink

Actually, it's a big concern. Over half of the $850 million gross revenue from "Finding Nemo" came from international theatrical distribution. And this excerpt (found on www.jimhillmedia.com/) from Pixar's 4th quarter earnings conference call supports it:
Quote:
Q: Steve, as you look toward the future in terms of deciding a new distribution partner beyond "Cars," I'm going to go ahead and assume that you are thinking that distribution domestically is largely a commodity there's really no one here in town that does it better than anyone else. But internationally clearly there are those studios that distribute more effectively than others studios and there are actually other studios that don't distribute internationally at all. MGM comes to mind, of course. Given that, is MGM out of the running and do you think that there are other studios here in town that distribute internationally better than others and what do you look for in making that decision?

SJ: Well, we have absolutely already looked at that question very intimately, examined cases of films that have been distributed domestically and internationally and look at them in great detail. We're very on top of that. And I'm not going to go into any of our thoughts about that right now except to say that we're very on top of that issue. And international distribution is very important to us.

Hot off the heals of announcing their first animated feature "Open Season"

Quote:
Sony Pictures Animation has begun production on Open Season, a computer-animated comedy planned for a 2006 theater release.

The plot involves animals stranded in the woods during hunting season, and the cast includes Martin Lawrence (Bad Boys 2) as the voice of a 900-pound, domesticated grizzly bear named Boog; Ashton Kutcher (Cheaper By The Dozen, Punk'd) as Elliot, a scrawny, one-horned deer; and Debra Messing (Will & Grace) as Beth, a forest ranger who rased Boog from a cub.

The film is based on the humor of syndicated cartoonist Steve Moore (In the Bleachers), who will also serve as Executive Producer, and will be directed by Jill Culton (whose film credits include Pixar's Monsters, Inc. and A Bug's Life), joined by Anthony Stacchi (Antz, James & The Giant Peach) serving as co-Director.

Rumors have started that Sony has it's eye on not just partnering with Pixar but to buy it out completely.

Quote:
CBS Marketwatch reports market rumors that Sony may be preparing an offer to buy out Pixar at about $75 a share, potentially making the deal worth $4.1 billion.

The rumors caused Pixar shares to climb $2.30 (3.5%), closing Thursday night at $68.11 per share. And Sony's shares grew by .76 (1.8%) to $42.15.

"Our comment on all rumors is that we don't comment on rumors," Sony spokeswoman Ann Morfogen told CBS MarketWatch. Pixar officials have not returned phone calls.

Analysts don't expect Pixar to give into Sony's bid since Steve Jobs (Apple/Pixar CEO) controls 60% of Pixar's shares.

Well lets see I got some change here, ok hows $4.31 for a 3D animation studio? Now lets get to work collecting money. Maybe you could use it to promote Pepito's World Domination.
