ADV Films confirmed that their release of Voices of a Distant Star will screen at A-kon, this weekend (May 30th - June 1st).

Here's how the company describes the new film:

Voices of a Distant Star was created single-handedly by the young Japanese animator Makoto Shinkai, using only a Macintosh G4/400 computer and assorted consumer- and professional-level design and animation programs. It is an extraordinarily beautiful film, telling in deft strokes a tale of two lovers torn apart by tides of war and millions of miles of interstellar space. Only the music (composed by Tenmon) and voice acting were not performed by Shinkai.

Voices of a Distant Star is on sale for the suggested price of $19.98. This DVD-only includes both English and Japanese language tracks and English subtitles.

Extras include:
3 versions of the creators animated short; She and Her Cat.
An interview with the creator
The directors cut (with alternate vocals)
Original production animatics
Four original Japanese trailers
Reversible cover
Also includes the standard ADV previews

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Will Vinton has filed suit against Phil Knight and four other members of Vinton Studios' board of directors, claiming he was forced out of the company he founded 27 years ago with insufficient compensation, The Oregonian reports. Vinton is seeking $3.1 million in damages.
Knight, the founder of shoe maker Nike, bailed out Vinton Studios several years ago after a series of cash crunches threatened to bankrupt the studio. In return, Knight acquired a significant ownership interest in the maker of claymation animated films.
As previously reported in major profile in the The Oregonian, Vinton and Knight have clashed repeatedly in recent months. Vinton resigned from the board of directors of Vinton Studios on April 14 and was fired from the company three days later.
TechTV's anime programming block, Anime Unleashed has announced via an online newsletter that three new series will be joining the block this summer. The new series include The SoulTaker, Gate Keepers 21 and Boogiepop Phantom.
Here are the official show descriptions, according to the network:
The SoulTaker
A young boy finds he is becoming something else. Something evil. Something dangerous.
Some time in the not so distant future Kirihara Heavy Industries, a powerful corporation, has gained control over most of the world. Deep in the city, a young boy named Kyosuke has his life shatter when his mother plunges a sharp knife into his heart for no apparent reason. As he recovers, his body reveals a dangerous secret proving his past is a lie -- and reveals his true identity as the powerful SoulTaker!
Kyosuke searches for Runa, the sister he never knew, and for the truth about his ability to transform. But Kirihara Heavy Industries will employ as much violence as possible to prevent Kyosuke from learning anything.
The 13 episodes of The SoulTaker combine a rich, baroque visual style, grand action sequences and a futuristic mystery that takes our hero through many twists and turns as he learns about himself. (Series premiere: Tuesday, June 24 at 12:00 a.m.)
Gate Keepers 21
Thirty-one years have passed since the defeat of the Invaders in 1969 Tokyo by the original teenage gang known as Gate Keepers. The Far Eastern branch of the AEGIS (Alien Exterminating Global Intercept System) Network, still holing up in underground Tokyo, has been working hard for its country's protection ever since.
Lately, strange things have been occurring around Tokyo. The first member of the 21st Century Gate Keepers, Ayane Isuzu, must find and recruit a new member before it's too late. Without new members the Invaders -- who embody the dark, immoral, valueless sides of humanity -- will surely take Tokyo this time.
Fans of the first Gate Keepers series (this is its sequel) and newcomers alike will be swallowed up in the dark and gorgeously animated near-future world of this 6-part series. (Series premiere: Wednesday, July 16 at 12:00 a.m.)
Boogiepop Phantom
Everyone knows about Boogiepop: meet her one dark night and you disappear. People tell each other the stories and laugh: no one believes that she exists in this day and age. Still, there are some strange things going on just below the surface. The glass shatters. Time stands still. There is something in the darkness. Are you safe?
Five years ago, there was a string of grisly murders that shook the city to its core. Now, in the present, psychic echoes reverberate...
Like Serial Experiments Lain, Boogiepop Phantom is a complex and fascinating puzzle the viewer participates in piecing together. The twelve-episode series blends together modern horror and science fiction to tell a strange, horrifying, and moving tale. (Series premiere: Monday, July 28 at 12:00 a.m.)
Cartoon Network celebrates its second month in a row as cable's #1 network in prime time delivery of kids 6-11 (672,000) and kids 2-11 (1,120,000) this May, according to a press release issued by the network.
Family Guy, in its first month performance, helped Adult Swim (Sunday-Thursday, 11 p.m.-2 a.m.) achieve its best-ever monthly delivery average for all target demos-adults 18-34, men 18-34, adults 18-24 and men 18-24. Additionally, strong ratings from the newly-stripped Justice League and the cable-television premiere of The Powerpuff Girls Movie also helped to propel the network in May.
Highlights of Cartoon Network's May '03 performance vs. May '02, according to the network:
Family Guy (Monday-Thursday, 11:30 p.m.) posted Cartoon Network's largest-ever delivery of adults 18-34 for a single telecast last Thursday (May 22), reaching a record 900,000 viewers, up 291% vs. the same time period last year. Adults 18-34 ratings that night (1.4) similarly grew by 250%.
Adult Swim achieved its best-ever monthly performance across all target demos since launching in strip on Jan. 12 this year. Adults 18-34 delivery (423,000) grew by 138% and ratings (0.7) by 133%. Adults 18-24 delivery (243,000) expanded by 176% and ratings (0.9) by 125%. Men 18-34 delivery (306,000) ballooned by 229% and ratings (1.0) by 233%. Men 18-24 delivery (182,000) improved by 219% and ratings (1.4) by 180%.
Codename: Kids Next Door (Friday, 10 p.m.) kept its hold on all kid demos this May, raking in double-digit delivery and ratings increases across the board. The original prime time animated series increased kids 6-11 delivery (1,095,000) by 14% and ratings (4.4) by 13%. Similarly, kids 2-11 delivery (1,708,000) grew by 11% and ratings (4.3) by 13%.
Justice League (Monday-Thursday, 10 p.m.) remained #1 in its time period on all cable with kids 6-11 ratings (2.6, up 18%) and delivery (632,000, up 16%) and kids 2-11 ratings (2.7, up 8%) and delivery (1,081,000, up 5%). The action series was also #1 with boys 6-11 ratings (4.1, up 58%) and delivery (515,000, up 58%) and boys 2-11 ratings (3.6, up 24%) and delivery (744,000, up 24%).
The Powerpuff Girls Movie (2002), Cartoon Network's first-ever theatrical motion picture venture, made its world television premiere over the Memorial Day weekend (May 23-26, 8 p.m. ET/PT) and produced powerful delivery and ratings increases across kid demos. Vs. the time period last year, Saturday night's telecast (May 24) was #1 on all television with kids 2-11, boys 2-11 and boys 6-11. Kids 2-11 delivery (1,595,000) grew by 47% and ratings (4.0) by 48%. The latest Initial D info, straight from TokyoPop (as always with these guys, subject to change without notice Wink )
Quote:
'The Fast and the Furious' meets 'Speed Racer' ...
In 41 episodes, Initial D tells the story of a 17-year-old tofu delivery boy named Tak who suddenly finds himself caught up in the heart-stopping world of street racing.
Tak drives an "Eight-Six," a street term for the Toyota Trueno AE86. When chance puts him up against street racing's most notorious driver and he actually wins the race, the lure is too much - he's hooked. Word quickly spreads about the famous "Eight-Six of Mount Akina", and more and more rival racers appear to challenge Tak and his friends in a series of white-knuckle contests.
The TOKYOPOP DVD release of Initial D will include an 'Import - Classic' version (Japanese audio & video intact) and a special U.S. 'Tricked Out' version featuring enhanced video, music, and English dialogue. Fans can 'mix-and-match' these versions, thereby customizing their viewing of each exciting episode!
So, on each DVD, you actually get a total of 6 episodes (!) - 3 episodes rendered in the 'Import - Classic' mode, and the same 3 eps presented in the enhanced 'Tricked Out' mode - all for just $19.99!!
I hate the fact that T-Pop's using the Anglicized names in their series' info. Mad
First disk currently scheduled for release on 09/16/2003.
Dark Horse Announces Three Manga
Chabon Series in Development
June 02, 2003
Dark Horse announced at Book Expo America this weekend that it has acquired the rights to three new manga series and is in discussions to acquire a comic series based on the work of Michael Chabon. All of the manga will be released in right-to-left 5" x 7" trade paperback format.
The Ring, starting in November, is based on the horror novels by Koji Suzuki. It will feature story by Hiroshi Takahashi and art by Misao Inagaki. The property has previously reached America in a Western adaptation of the film and the dubbed Japanese version. 304 pages at $14.95
Trigun is part of the Adult Swim block on Cartoon Network, and the manga will find a ready audience when the series starts in November. Story and art are by Yasuhiro Nightow. 360 pages at $14.95.
Hellsing has story and art by Kouta Hirano and will kick off in December at $13.95 for 208 pages. The anime has been released in the U.S. by Pioneer.
Dark Horse is in discussions with Michael Chabon to produce comic material featuring characters created by Chabon in The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Clay, with stories set in the style of various comic book eras from the 1940s to today. Chabon is expected to guide the direction of the series as well as contributing to writing original stories. Other writers and artists will also contribute to the project, which will probably launch in early 2004.
Wow! This is quite some surprising news! Dirty Pair Flash has been picked up by...THE SCI-FI CHANNEL?!?
Yeah, that's right! The very people who announced 3 years ago that they will never broadcast animation again is breaking their promise and returning to the game!
Dirty Pair Flash is the latest anime series to be announced for broadcast on Sci-Fi Channel, to be shown every Thursday starting on 3rd July. From the Sci-Fi press release: "Look out universe! When the galaxy-wide World Welfare & Works Agency unleashes the infamous Dirty Pair, it's every sentient being for itself! From the best-selling novels by Haruhiko Takachiho comes the apocalyptic saga of two young women destined to go down in history as the most destructive force known to man."
So, a few years back, there was this Jonah Hex miniseries that DC Comics published that was about… Well, let's let the California Supreme Court summarize the tale:
Quote:
The series contains an outlandish plot, involving giant worm-like creatures, singing cowboys, and the “Wilde West Ranch and Music and Culture Emporium,” named for and patterned after the life of Oscar Wilde. The third volume ends with a reference to two new characters, the “Autumn brothers,” and the teaser, “Next: The Autumns of Our Discontent.” The cover of volume 4 depicts the Autumn brother characters, with pale faces and long white hair. One brother wears a stovepipe hat and red sunglasses, and holds a rifle. The second has red eyes and holds a pistol. This volume is entitled, "Autumns of Our Discontent," and features brothers Johnny and Edgar Autumn, depicted as villainous half-worm, half-human offspring born from the rape of their mother by a supernatural worm creature that had escaped from a hole in the ground. At the end of volume 5, Jonah Hex and his companions shoot and kill the Autumn brothers in an underground gun battle.
Now, why are the California Supremes sitting around reading comic books, you ask. Because DC got its ass sued by Johnny and Edgar Winter, a pair of real-life musician brothers who claimed that DC had "appropriated" their name and likenesses. (Also, they claimed that the comic falsely portrayed them as "vile, depraved, stupid, cowardly, subhuman individuals who engage in wanton acts of violence, murder and bestiality for pleasure and who should be killed.")
Anyway, the California court has just thrown out the lawsuit, saying that although the Winter brothers have the right not have their economic interests damaged by the misappropriation of their image, they can't just go around stifling other people's First Amendment rights. "The right of publicity derived from public prominence does not confer a shield to ward off caricature, parody and satire," the majority opinion says, approvingly quoting a similar opinion in another case. "Rather, prominence invites creative comment."
For anyone's who's interested, you can download the ruling in Winter vs. DC Comics in PDF format.
Separately, the U. S. Supreme Court today closed a possible loophole that could have let entertainment companies prevent the distribution of material they own but whose copyright has expired.
Marvin The Martian and Daffy Duck will appear on official patches that Warner Bros. has designed for two NASA Mars Exploration Rover Missions this summer. The special patches will act as the defining logo for the mission and will be worn by TEAM DELTA crews, comprising members from NASA, the United States Air Force, and Boeing. They will be featured on mission control and launch pad crew suits, jackets, and mugs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In a recent Video Business Article, Creator Seth McFarlane discussed the success of the recent Family Guy DVDs, as well as the reruns on Cartoon Network. The high sales of the DVDs have prompted Fox to consider a direct-to-video feature.

Nearly 400,000 copies of a DVD collection of Family Guy episodes have been sold since 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment shipped the three-disc set last month, according to the studio. Although nowhere near the 1 million-plus units sold of shows such as The Simpsons, Friends and Sex and the City, the number is pretty amazing considering the sitcom was never a ratings hit and aired sporadically during a good chunk of its three-year run on Fox.

What's more, repeats of Family Guy have proven to be a major hit on Cartoon Network. Earlier this month, a Thursday night repeat drew nearly as many viewers 18 to 34 as hits such as South Park and Trading Spaces and slightly outdrew MTV's hit Sorority Life 2.

Newfound buzz has even prompted talk from creator Seth MacFarlane of a direct-to-DVD feature-length Family Guy, although that's still in the early stages of discussion.

"It's all pretty insane," MacFarlane told Daily Variety. "It's certainly some vindication and a sign that the show is as popular as we always suspected."

"Destino," a seven-minute animated film that sprang from a collaboration between Walt Disney and Salvador Dali, had a belated world premiere at the Annecy animated film festival on Monday.

Begun in 1946, the short, which was originally intended to be part of a compilation film, was shelved when the Disney studio ran into financial difficulties. Roy Disney rediscovered the footage four years ago and spearheaded a project to restore and finish it.

Actually it's being passed around ont he short film circuit. It's the first official oscar hopeful.

Back to the news.

"With the success of the recently released DVD trilogy it’s no surprise to learn that Universal wants another “Back to the Future” movie. Producer Bob Gale has said no, as has Director Robert Zemeckis and even stars Michael J.Fox and Christopher Lloyd. So is there a saving grace? For Universal, yes, and it may come in the form of Steven Spielberg. Spielberg has part say whether another film ever sees the light of day, and rumour has it he’s had briefs talks to Universal about it – even suggesting alternatives if the original cast and the original creative team don’t return. One of those options is to do an animated version of the film – based on the cartoons that spawned from the original series – which will keep Universal happy long enough for the original BTTF team to change their numbers."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Evan Dorkin has revealed via his website that he will be working on an all new pilot for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block. Dorkin had previously served as a writer on such acclaimed series as Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, and Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, as well as serving as executive producer on Welcome to Eltingville, a pilot which aired last year on Adult Swim.
Additionally, he revealed that he is at work on the new Space Ghost: Coast to Coast DVDs, adding commentary tracks to many of the first season episodes. As Animation Insider previously reported, the DVDs will be available in the fall.
"Two of our early episodes will be included in the package, and last Thursday we recorded a commentary track for one of them, 'Girlie Show,' which featured Fran Drescher, Alice Cooper and Carol Channing as guests," Dorkin said on his weblog. "I don't think we said anything really funny, but the recording was a lot of fun."
