I am trying to bring my old computer back from the dead, but Im currently unsuccesful. That is why I am asking for your help.
When I try to boot up my old computer, I see the windows loading screen (I have the crappy windows ME on it) bu then the screen goes black and it shows that system.ini is missing, boot computer with the backup disk and type in SCANREG /RESTORE. I tried running of hardrive with the cd help (I put in the windows reinstall cd), I typed in SCANREG /RESTORE, but it doesn't do anything.
Then I tried to reinstall windows. At first everything works normal (I have reinstalled it about 3 times before), but when scandisk gets to checking "File System", it just stayes at 0%. I tried to run this a couple of times, I still get the same results.
Someone please help me, I really want to bring my old computer back because I have files on it which I didn't burn on a cd and can't get them again (cough. bootleg programs .cough..cough.). If you need more info, i would be happy to give it to you if I know it.

Solution requiring lowest level of computer knowledge: If you can obtain one, take an old hard drive, doesn't need to be that big, stick it in your case, install windows, and then attach your old drive as a secondary HD. _________________ Ice cream has this erotic sense to it- kinda like the one choclate and strawberries have.

So even if the old drive does not have mandatory windows files, I would be able to work with all the other files, right?

I would think you should be able to, since you would be booting Windows from the other drive.
However, I have a question:
When you say "old computer", are you implying that you have a new computer that you want to transfer these files onto?
If so, why not just take the harddrive out of the old computer and install it as a secondary drive in the new computer? or if its on a network, you can just snag the latest knoppix build pop it in and play with your files...
Mind you you don't seem to familiar with linux, so Nobu's Idea of putting it into a newer already working box sounds better _________________ The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

My new computer is only a few months old and it has a 2 year warranty. If I open the case, the warranty will expire and I don't want that to happen. I don't have a network between these computers eather.

snag a bootleg of bootable partition magic, use it to resize your current partition, then create a new partition in the remaining space, install a tiny win9x on the new partition, and have fun.
or buy a cat5e crossover cable.
or a router and a couple patch cables.

Call up Dell/HP/Compaq and bitch at them for not being allowed to modify -your- computer for 2 years. Explain that in 2 years it not be at match with decent tech. Ask them for any loopholes that allow you to open your case. Don't let them hang up without giving you the answer you want. plus, you'll never use the warranty like that you'll always just call tech support, they tell you "do this... not working? do this... not working(rinse and repeat)" and then they'll ship you a new part for you to install yourself or mostlikely it'll be a software issue and you'll have to run a system restore _________________ The problem with America is stupidity. Oh, I forgot to say that I think my old computer has a ton of viruses, wormas, adware and spyware that I wasn't able to get rid off. Anyway, I was able to install windows on my old hd (even though it took it about 58 hours to check itself and instal). I will probably just get another harddrive later, maybe ill try getting Linux for it.

if it has a large ammount of viruses, ect... you'll need to run a stinger. If you're concerned about the state of your HDD, you'll need to run a diagnostic.
For general computer diagnostics, repair, and trouble shooting, I reccommend the Ultimate Boot CD. You can download the CD images, or order a pressed disk from:
http://ultimatebootcd.com/index.html
This CD contains partitioning tools, diagnostic tools, maintaince tools, free virus scanning programs, and several small lunix live distros.
I'd be plenty happy to help walk you through using it.

Thanks for the offer WhtHawk. My old computer is not connected to the internet, so I just download the tools and burn them on cds, right?
A couple of questions before that. If I use those tools, would I need a lot of free memory on the HDD, because I only have about 2 and a half gigs left. Also, would those tools erase memory off the drive, or will they just monitore it and check it for errors? Final question, should I first get another HDD and connect it as a secondary drive?

Yes, you would download the file and burn it to a CD. Then set the computer you want to boot, to boot from CD-ROM before the HDD in the BIOS. Then put the disk in the CD-ROM and reboot the computer.
This disks, and the tools on it, run from RAM and your CD-ROM. HDD space is not required, infact a HDD isn't required.
This disk has many tools that will help you repair and diagnose your system. Amoung thoses tools are HDD wiping/ereasure utilites. These utilities will do everything from removing the formatting, to overwritting data, to completing digital data destruction alogorithms more complex than those used by the DoD.
Basilcy all of the destructive tools on the CD are clearly labled. But if you have any questions, ask.
