And that's not all!

NAVARRE’S BCI OFFERS A GALAXY OF ACTION AND ADVENTURE WITH THE FIRST 33 EPISODES OF THE CLASSIC ANIMATED SERIES DEFENDERS OF THE EARTH: Volume One
Further Adventures of Flash Gordon, The Phantom, and Mandrake the Magician Available in Five-Disc Set on October 10th For $39.98

From out of the skies, rockets ignite, signaling the return to Earth of its greatest space champion, Flash Gordon. Now, the iconic interstellar hero has teamed up with his legendary comic strip and film companions for thrilling adventures in “Defenders of the Earth,” the animated series originally created by Marvel Productions. BCI, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Navarre Corporation, and Hearst Entertainment, are proud to announce the DVD release of “Defenders of the Earth: Volume One,” a five-disc set featuring the first 33 episodes of the series, available October 10th at a suggested retail price of $39.98.

“Defenders of the Earth” follows the continuing story of Flash Gordon, who returns to Earth in the near future, to defend the planet against the evil Emperor Ming. In the exciting battle between good and evil that follows, Flash teams up with Mandrake, the master of illusion, the powerfully strong Lothar, and The Phantom, who has the ability to summon the strength of the jungle animals in his battle against evil. The dazzling quartet of heroes is joined by their young offspring: handsome and headstrong Rick Gordon; Jedda Walker and her panther sidekick; tough and smart Lothar "L.J." Jr.; and orphaned Kshin with his outer-space pet Zuffy. Together, the team of heroes must battle against evildoers from their pasts and future, including Ming and his underlings, as well as super villains, marauding aliens, destructive demons, and sultry enchantresses! United as a team, they protect mankind as the Defenders of the Earth.

“Defenders of the Earth” features Flash Gordon, who was created for comic strips in 1934 by Alex Raymond. Soon launched into Hollywood and beyond, Flash Gordon became one of the most popular and well-known space heroes ever created. The Phantom debuted in 1936 from creator Lee Falk, and the purple-clad "Ghost Who Walks" has been published worldwide ever since, as well as starring in feature films and animation. Mandrake the Magician (with sidekick Lothar) debuted in 1934, also the creation of Lee Falk, and his suave adventures were translated into film, radio, and a stage musical. When the quartet of heroes was united in the 1986 series by Marvel Productions — the creative minds behind Spider-Man, the Hulk, and X-Men — the result was “Defenders of the Earth.” Over the course of 65 syndicated episodes, the series led to a 1987 comic book adaptation published by Marvel, a line of books, and a popular toy line from Galoob.

As it has done with its previous award-winning animated boxed sets, BCI will include in the five-disc collection a series of dazzling Special Features. The deluxe set will be packaged in a brilliantly-designed fold-out box with slipcase.

Special features for “Defenders of the Earth: Volume One” include:

· Interviews with “Defenders of the Earth” producers David J. Corbett and Bill Hutten, voice actors Peter Mark Richman and Loren Lester, and historian Rick Norwood.
· Full episode audio commentary track for “Defenders of the Earth” Episode 1 - “Escape From Mongo” featuring supervising producer David J. Corbett, producer/director Bill Hutten, story editor and episode writer Bryce Malek, voice actor Loren Lester (Rick Gordon), and episode storyboard artist Michael Swanigan. Commentary hosted by special features producer Andy Mangels.
· Image gallery of “Defenders of the Earth” original model sheets and sketches, plus a gallery of presentation artwork and backgrounds uses in the series.
· Original Presentation Pilot for “Defenders of the Earth” featuring alternate characters and animation
· Detailed profiles of various characters
· Two exclusive collectible 4x6 “Defenders of the Earth” art postcards by acclaimed comic book artists Michael Allred and Rafael Kayanan
· DVD-ROM Features – a selection of complete scripts and storyboards (PDF format, PC/Mac readable)
· “Defenders of the Earth” Trivia and Fun Facts

Madhouse (Japanese animation studio)
- Speaking to a small Friday audience, Madhouse started their panel with a sizzle reel of recently produced titles like Redline, Black Lagoon, NANA, Kiba, Yume Tsukai, and others.

- Black Lagoon will be released in the US by Geneon Entertainment.

- A trailer was also shown for the studio’s summer movie, Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time), which appears to be a Makoto Shinkai-style slice of life film with sci-fi elements.

- The final trailer shown was for Highlander: Vengeance, which is being directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, of Vampire Hunter D and Ninja Scroll fame.

- Redline is being directed by Takeshi Koike, who was responsible for the Animatrix short "World Record". However, Koike is taking his time and will not likely be finished “anytime soon.”

- Toki wo Kakeru Shojo, directed by Mamoru Hosoda, is currently only being shown in one theater in Tokyo. So far, it has been receiving rave reviews and all shows have been sold out to capacity. The CEO of Kadokawa has even called it the “best work to come out from Madhouse.”

- All of the titles they showed are slated to be completed by the end of this year, with the exception of Redline.

- During the question and answer session, said that Satoshi Kon’s new title Paprika was finished and will be playing at the Venice International Film Festival. It will be released commercially in Japan in December. [Sony has distribution rights in the US, expect DVD next year- N.]

Kadokawa Shoten (Japanese licensor)
- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya does not currently have a distributor, but Kadokawa has received several offers from companies; expects it to be released in the US next year. With the first volume having sold 60,000 units in Japan, it is one of the most successful anime properties currently on the market.

- When asked about the Haruhi novels and manga, the company has received offers, and there is a chance that those too will be seen next year.

- Distributors have not yet been picked for The Third, Demon Bane, or Karin, but those titles will likely be seen “next year.” As for The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, the company is looking to release it theatrically in the US.

- A fan asked if there were plans to make further Full Metal Panic series. While there was a possibility of making movies or more TV series, the company has not fully decided yet; they may consider creating one new Full Metal property every two years.

AnimEigo has licensed Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl. "Expect the first box set in early 2007," their website reads, "though we don't guarantee this timeline."

AnimEigo will hold "an extremely fashionable preorder" for the show. Previous AnimEigo preorders featured a degrading price scheme in which the final price dropped as the number of preorders rose.

Yawara is AnimEigo's first anime license since the You're Under Arrest TV series in 2001.

from http://www.satamsonic.com, a fansite for the old Saturday morning Sonic the Hedgehog series (Nightweaver's favorite), specifically this thread in their forums:

Quote:
Hey, guys! It gives me great pleasure to finally speak with some of the SatAM fans. You have no idea how long I've waited to do so, since this deal between DiC and Shout! Factory has been in the works for quite some time. But it's official. Shout! Factory will be releasing Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Series in early 2007. Unfortunately, I can't tell you just how early, since that's not exactly my job.

What I can say is this... Because I'm Shout! Factory's residing 80s-90s geek, I have the great privilege of producing this set. If you're interested in knowing what kinds of bonus features I've been able to put together for previous DiC sets, feel free to check out COPS: The Animated Series, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! Volumes 1 & 2, Inspector Gadget: The Original Series, Where On Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?, and the upcoming Sabrina the Animated Series.

You'll notice there are a lot of art-related bonus features on these sets. Frankly, that's for two reasons. First of all, as a producer and director myself, I'm always fascinated by the way things are put together, so I usually like to show you everything from early concept art to animated storyboards and the like. The second reason is that this artwork is often the only kind of bonus material available from DiC. There was a time when they didn't have this stuff in their archives, especially for some of the older shows, and the boxes have been pilfered. Often, this is what survives the years.

For Sonic the Hedgehog, however, I'd like put some special bonus features onto the set. These are currently pending, so only time will tell.

I just want to let everyone know that I'll be stopping in, most likely daily, to get feedback, ideas, concerns, etc. from you guys. I'm a fanboy, too, and I know what it's like to have something you love being handled by someone who couldn't care less. I want to ease those concerns here and now. I'll do everything in my power to create a set you'd all be proud to own.

That said, there are times when certain things are out of my control and I want you all to understand that. Unfortunately, there are times when you say, "I think it'd be great to have [insert bonus feature here]! Make sure that's on the set!" And then, I go looking to put that stuff on and I can't. It's not that I didn't try. It's simply that, for one reason or another, I couldn't get permission.

So chat away. You have my ears (or eyes, as the case may be).

Thanks!

Brian Ward

Hello iTunes?! Surprised

Viz Media Obtains License to Download Death Note
Jan 10 2007

Innovative Agreement Will Provide Episodes On A Download To Own/Rent Basis Soon After They Air In Japan

San Francisco, CA, January 10, 2007 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), one of the entertainment industry's most innovative and comprehensive publishing, animation and licensing companies, has announced that it has licensed from Nippon Television Network Corporation (NTV) the Download to Own (DTO) and Download to Rent (DTR) rights for the United States for the smash hit DEATH NOTE anime series, currently airing in Japan.

The deal is significant because it marks the first time a well known Japanese anime property will be made legally available to domestic audiences for download to own while the title still airs on Japanese television. VIZ Media will seek to make the series available to consumers through a number of online providers in order to reach the widest audience possible.

DEATH NOTE, based on the Shueisha manga series of the same name, is currently one of the hottest anime titles in Japan. Published in North America by VIZ Media, it depicts the adventures of Light Yagami, an ace student with great prospects but who is bored out of his mind. All of that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to investigate, and he is soon hot on the trail of Light, who must now reevaluate his one noble goal.

“We are pleased to team with a leading anime and manga company like VIZ Media to bring the DEATH NOTE anime series to eager fans in the United States digitally,” states NTV Spokesperson. “VIZ Media understands how the Internet can be used to distribute content. Hello iTunes! Very Happy

FUNimation sent me an e-mail this morning announcing that their Gonzo-animated series Desert Punk, Samurai 7 and SpeedGrapher are available for purchase from Apple's iTunes Store.
Episodes are English-only, US availability only (duh) and $1.99 apiece. Or you can buy a complete "season" (iTunes terminology) for $38.99.

FUNimation says there's more to come.
