I have two things that feed my anime viewing. One is Tivo a gift from god himself. And the other is Netflix. So I rented the OVA for Ronin Warriors. For an anime that was done in 1989 (possible older then some of the readers of this forum). It was a lot more violent and better drawn then I remember on TV. The only downside to the OVA that I heard was the horrid voice acting. The main bad guy was done by the VA of Garlic jr. And I couldnt help but laugh whenever he spoke. I was really suprised by the level of blood in the beginning of the OVA as well. I dont remember that being in the TV version. If you havent seen them its not a bad series. You just need to be in the right mind set when sitting through them. Which is why i am writing this stream of thought post.

I also own the complete Robotech DVD set. And I can't say that its held up to the test of time as well as the Ronin Warriors. The voice acting in Robotech is questionable. The animation for anything other then the fight sequences isnt that special. And their are a lot of sterotypes in Robotech to. I do know that Robotech is the subject of debate because of it being 3 different animes, we love you Carl Macek. But its one of the shows that introduced me to anime.

This can be the case with old cartoons as well. The more I watch Centurions and GI Joe the more Im suprised by the adult material. I dont mean sex of course. I mean storylines like kidnapping, large scale destruction. The GI Joe episode where Cobra kidnaps the families of the Joes. Just seemed a little more adult then I would have expected from a cartoon. I guess as I get older im looking for different things in animation. But today's cartoons, not animes, don't seem to have the same belief in giving the adult something to watch as well.

So use this thread to talk about Ronin Warrior, Robotech/Macross, old cartoons, or just the changes in animation in general.

I've noticed that too with alot of comedic cartoons these days. Like, back in the late '80s early '90s kids cartoons were packed with subtle adult humor that was hella funny (Freakazoid). But, you just don't see that in cartoons anymore....at least not the ones I've seen...

I have the first half of Gigantor on DVD. (The black and white version that aired on Giant Robot Week, not the 80s remake.) It's enjoyable if you're into old, kooky cartoons. It makes me laugh whenever I watch it. Laughing Sadly, I tried to pick up the second half of the series, but all the copies were already bought. Sad

I also noticed that some of the newer shows don't seem to add much to the characters' personalities like the old ones did.

Example: G1 Transformers and Armada

I think I might pick up the Transformers G1 DVDs eventually, since that's what really got me into animation in the first place. However, most old animation is too choppy and hurts my eyes. I just can't watch . . .
