Thought I might start up this infrequently-updated thread again if anybody besides me cared. For those that don't know, Shonen Jump is a manga compilation magazine that has brought us such landmark titles as Dragonball, YuYu Hakusho, and Senkaiden Houshin Engi. Each edition is described as a "phone book" and are often 200+ pages each, containing several titles at once. The sensation is making its way to the US thanks to Viz, and will be available at your neighborhood stores soon. The following is from Shonen Jump's official newsletter:

Jeez, it's been a long time since anyone posted here, but then again there's been little reason. Well, no more. "Shonen Jump" Volume 1, Issue 1 is out in stores as we speak. The retail price is $4.95 USA, $7.95 Canadian for 288 pages of 6 manga series, product reviews, artist interviews, letters, Q&A, and more fun junk than you can shake a collapsable lawn chair at. Okay so maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but you have to admit that it's a darn good price.

In the first issue we get the premire episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh!, Sandland, YuYu Hakusho, and One Piece. Dragonball Z picks up right after the defeat of Furiza, which can be a little confusing to anyone who doesn't know the rest of the story. There are reviews of anime DVDs like JoJo's Bizzare Adventure, TV reviews (this time it's the Kinnikuman dub), and manga artcles (Hikari no Go). There are color articles and advertisements for video and card games towards the back, but nothing to write home about.

I mainly bought "Shonen Jump" for the manga. Six series for 5 bucks is nothing to sneeze at. I particularly like One Piece, a funny pirate story about this kid who really needs some ritalin and does a great Mr. Fantastic impression. YuYu Hakusho is pretty close to the anime for right now, but there are a few things you see that aren't on TV (Yusuke's mom looks pretty good in a camisole). Sandland is about some demons and a human that go looking for a mysterious lake in the middle of a desert that makes the Sahara look like a freakin' rain forest (plus the demon king Lucifer looks very familiar to any DBZ fans out there). For those who bemoan any and all things Yu-Gi-Oh! (you poor, unfortunate, dub-exposed souls), you're missing out on a lot by not catching the manga. #1: There's more adult humor than you will ever see on tv (Anzu: "On the basketball court, I thought the guys were passing to the girls a lot...Found out they were peeking when the girls made their shots! Never play basketball in a skirt." Yugi: "Huh huh huh. Basketball good.") #2: Yugi's grandfather is a perv in line with Roshi ("You've really grown since I last saw you Anzu. Especially your bust! Almost to the 32" mark?) #3: Yami Yugi (Yugi's alter ego) is just plain wicked (he plays a game with a guy where you have to stab money off the top of your hand with a knife to win it, and drives the guy insane when he cheats and tries to kill Yugi.)

All in all, most people here will find something to like about "Shonen Jump." While just a monthly release now, Viz has even talked about making it a weekly mag if it becomes popular enough. My full review of Issue #1 might make its way to Zech's site soon, so go there if you want more info.

Wow, talk about quick reaction time. There's already a Shonen Jump fansite up after only less than a week of it being on the shelves. Still not much up right now content-wise (okay, so there's nothing there except the section layouts), but go give http://m16.gamesquad.net/~admin20/ a try.

Here's the latest Jump newsletter. I know, I know. 3 posts in a row with no poignant discussions or earth-shattering news? Well, them's the breaks. The next issue of Jump is out on Jan 7, so hunker down for the long haul. Anyway, here's the newsletter.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The SHONEN JUMP Team is busy packing their bags in preparation to attend 'Jump Festa' in Japan (watch out for coverage in Issue 3!), before
heading home for the holidays... But we're never too busy for SHONEN
JUMP fans! In fact, because we're going to be so busy in the next few
weeks, we're giving you an extra helping of SHONEN JUMP goodness this
week to make up for it!

In this Issue:

* SHONEN JUMP selling out!

* SHONEN JUMP Launch Party a Success!

* From the Editor: Issue Two Sneak Peek

* This Week's Wallpaper: Naruto! Bonus Wallpaper: One Piece Holidaze!

* Share the Joys of the Season with SHONEN JUMP holiday cards!

* Still haven't subscribed? Don't miss Naruto's premiere in Issue Two!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's right, you heard it here first: SHONEN JUMP is quickly selling
out! You may not be able to find it in your local store! But fear not,
if you subscribe now, we'll still start you off from our Premiere
Issue! We're going back to print specially for you subscribers to make
sure our fans don't go JUMP-less. So hurry and get your subscription
in!

Why is SHONEN JUMP such a phenomenon all of the sudden? Thanks to YOU,
of course! We really appreciate all our readers and hardcore fans
getting the word out after seeing the Issue Zero preview. Thanks to your
support, we had over 10,000 subscribers before Issue One even came out,
and more sign up every day. Thanks for believing in us, now we're even
more determined to give you a magazine you'll always be able to count
on!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

December 6th, 2002: SHONEN JUMP Day in New York City!

For everyone who went, it was an amazing event! With Dragon Ball Z
characters and voice actors, video and card games, YuYu Hakusho TV
episodes screened, and an appearance by Akira Toriyama himself, it was
practically "Issue One come to life".

The gala event, held in a big tent at Chelsea Piers in New York City,
attracted anime and manga fans from all over - including celebrities
like champion in-line skaters the Yasutoko Brothers of Japan!

With so much excitement, it's hard to truly capture the essence of the
party, other than that it was the amazing launch of an equally amazing
magazine. Said one attendee: "I'm hoping there will be more 'gatherings'
like this. They're really fun, and this one was free!!"

Pictures available soon at shonenjump.com!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Believe it or not, our intrepid editors are already hard at work on
Issue Three of SHONEN JUMP! Apparently, between travelling to Japan and
the holiday season, they're going to be so busy for the next few weeks
they're trying to get all their regular work done early!

Unfortunately, they refused to tell us what's going to be in the third
issue...but lucky for us, this also meant they were so frazzled that
they leaked important details of SHONEN JUMP Issue Two to us without
even realizing it:

* Issue Two features not only the premiere of Naruto, but also an
exclusive interview with it's creator - Masashi Kishimoto!

* Keeping you on the cutting edge of what's new in Japan, we've got the
scoop on the brand-new Naruto anime series!

* In keeping with the theme, we'll also reveal the secret behind several
specialized Ninjutsu techniques you can learn yourself!

All of this, and much, much more awaits when Issue Two hits the streets
January 7th!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

We have a double-header this week in our downloads section.

First up is Naruto: In honor of his impending debut in SHONEN JUMP's
second issue, we've put up a second Naruto wallpaper for you to enjoy!
Spiral into adventure with Sasuke, Sakura, and of course, Naruto, as
they paint your desktop red! We don't like to play favorites around the
office, but this is definitely one of ours, and I'm sure you'll agree:

CHECK IT OUT: http://shonenjump.com/downloads

Next, we have a special Season's Greetings from a most unlikely pirate
crew! Join Luffy and the gang as they ring in the holidays - and the new
year - as your desktop background image! Get in the spirit and crack a
smile with the jovial art of Eiichiro Oda!

GET IT NOW: http://shonenjump.com/downloads

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking of the holidays: can you think of any friends or family you
haven't seen in a while? Why not let them know you care, and send them
a personalized holiday message! Even better, do it for free using SHONEN
JUMP holiday greeting cards:

SEND ONE NOW: http://shonenjump.com/cards

Choose from one of four designs featuring characters from SHONEN JUMP!
Of course, if you haven't managed to get a subscription yourself yet,
these cards are also a great hint for gift-pondering parents, or those
who simply hate to go out and shop. Wink

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The holiday spirit is filling the air, and the new subscription
department here in the office! Through the holidays, we've continued our
promotional pricing of $19.95 for 12 issues of SHONEN JUMP!

With seven manga titles, exclusive interviews, special contests and
promotions, SHONEN JUMP is well worth its $4.95 retail cover price - but
you can still subscribe for over 66% off for a limited time!!!

Not only will you save a lot of money, but if you act now, you'll also
get to read Naruto from the very beginning! If you miss out on a single
episode of this fast-paced ninja epic, you'll be 'shuriken' for weeks!

ORDER TODAY: http://store.viz.com/M-SJSUB1?mv_pc=jumplist

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh yes, and if we don't get a chance to send you a personalized e-card
ourselves, best wintry wishes from the SHONEN JUMP Team!
