The Academy Award nominations are out, and we've got three contenders for Best Animated Picture Oscar gold this year.

- Cars, directed by John Lasseter
Cocky racecar Lightning McQueen is heading across the country to face his rivals in the California Piston Cup racewhen he is forced to stop in the small town of Radiator Springs. Sentenced by the town judge to repair its mainroad, loner Lightning learns a lesson in friendship from the easygoing locals.

- Happy Feet, directed by George Miller
Mumble is a young Emperor penguin who, unlike the rest of his colony, can't sing a note but is a dazzling dancer. Banished for this perceived flaw by the colony's rigid elders, Mumble begins an odyssey that leads him to a band of friendly Mexican penguins...and his first encounters with the two-legged creatures whose presence threatens the animals' Antarctic home.

- Monster House, directed by Gil Kenan
When twelve-year-old DJ confronts Nebbercracker, the owner of the menacing house across the street, the sinister old man is taken away after a seemingly fatal seizure. Along with his friends, Chowder and Jenny, DJ decides to explore the house...only to discover that it has its own fatal way of dealing with invaders.

So goes the age-old question: Who will wins?

In other news, the contenders for Best Animated Short this year are:

- "The Danish Poet", by Torill Kove
Kasper, a young poet in search of inspiration, travels to Norway to meet the celebrated writer, Sigrid Undset.

- "Lifted", by Gary Rydstrom
As his weary instructor looks on in disbelief, an alien abductor-in-training tries to maneuver a sleeping farmer onto their spaceship.

- "The Little Matchgirl", by Roger Allers and Don Hahn
The poor street urchin of Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale finds visions of happiness in the flames of the matches she lights to keep warm.

- "Maestro", by Geza M. Toth
A singing bird sits in front of a dressing room mirror as a mechanical arm prepares him for his grand performance.

- "No Time For Nuts", by Chris Renaud and Michael Thurmeier
While trying to bury a nut during the Ice Age, Scrat uncovers a frozen time machine.
