For years I have watched people play DDR and thought 'wow this game looks pretty wicked' but I had never played a real game until about a half an hour ago. Waiting in line I saw a couple girls just pass beginner with Ds and I was all like 'wow even I could do better than that'. When my friend and I got up she chose the song at beginner, don’t remember what it was but it wasn’t supposed to be difficult. When the game started, my first step was supposed to be up but I stepped on left and it went down hill from there. I only got two 'good's the entire round and basically all the rest were 'boo'. Is DDR supposed to be this hard or do I just really suck?!?!?

Timing is the hardest factor of the game (you're supposed to hit it right when it hits the arrow at the top), so yeah, it's supposed to be that hard.

I recommend using the training mode first so you can get experienced with that kind of thing.

Your never going to be good your first time. Your never going to be good your second time. Your never going to be good your hundredth time. For kicks, I'll post the same thing I pmed Mith back with--a basic tips guide I whipped up real quick, aimed mostly at beginners. Keep in mind that DDR is a game that is aimed at repeat players that have logged hundreds of hours of play, so the relatively "good" players are going to be leagues beyond what a casual player will ever see out of themselves.
Quote:
Strangely enough, I actually get this from a lot of people. Besides the basic tips that are given on DDR Freak, there are the major categories of timing, reading, and coordination.
Timing is often a cause of CRD (caucasian rhythm disorder) in which a player doesn't realize that the steps are actually to the beat (or sometimes rhythm or melody) of the song. The best way to fix this is to tap your foot to the music before any steps show up, and realize that, at least on the easy songs, the steps will fall on that bass beat.
Reading is a matter of designating arrows on the screen to arrows on the pad. The only way to solve this is practice, just as with any video game controller. Practice, practice, practice. One of the larger problems you should be running into is jumps that are not up-down or left-right, but one of the other four, more sinister combinations. My best advice for these roadblocks is to play a song that would otherwise be incredibly easy to beat, and become familiar with it. Songs that will have you step on one arrow, then it's neighbor, then jump to the other 2 are also very helpful (www.Blondie Girl on Standard comes to mind). Another read problem is sheer speed. Again, practice is key. If something has arrows moving too fast, try to work your way up to that many BPMs with other songs. If the arrows are too slow, try holding the select button when you pick your song (this only works with 6th mix or later), and an options screen will appear, in which you can increase the difference between arrows (and thus the speed of the arrows as well).
Finally, coordination problems (tripping over yourself, misjudging distances, poor balance) can only be fixed by watching other people (specifically thier feet and the way their upper body relates to them), and playing yourself. I've been told if your really good, physical meditation works as well, but that's not near as much fun as actually playing. If your problem is balance, also remember that that bar is behind you to help in case you lose balance. Remember where it is, but don't ever rely on it.
Also remember that getting good at DDR takes a lot of work. You didn't win your first game of Chess, or for that matter did you win very many games for the first few months you played. You can't start running track and post a 4:15 mile without a considerable amount of effort and practice. Not only is there a level of coordination and experience, but physical ability, which plays very heavily as you progress in your DDR skill.
"But John Bono," you might say, you started passing catas (9-foot songs--until 6th mix, the hardest difficulty a song could rate) after 9 months of play. It can't be that hard. And for some people that's true, but for the vast majority, including myself, that's wrong. Not only is how long you play important, but how much. How often you play, for how long you play, and how long you've been playing DDR are all important to your skill factor. I, for example, play once (occasionally twice) a week on average, and play for an average fo 3 hours. This is an exceedingly long amount of time to be playing DDR, and I expect no one to last this long in straight play for at least a month or two. And if you do, make sure to bring plenty of water and a less smell shirt to change into. Altogether, this means I have played for easily 150 hours, more likely 200. Don't expect to pass anything 8 feet or better before 50; DDR is quite the skill-intensive game.
As a quick aside, apparal is also an important consideration when DDRing. Try to wear non motion restrictive clothing, preferably shorts and a t-shirt equivilant. This helps immensely with helping yourself to radiate heat. Also, make sure you have a decent pair of tennis or cross training shoes on. You'll tear your feet up on the plexiglass at the arcade, and platform and high-heels have obvious hazards to play. Running shoes are also a bad idea, as they aren't meant for side to side motion.

BTW, the further into the game you get, the easier timing gets. Whait until you get to "twists," "gallups," and the combination thereof Twisted Evil . I'm still teaching myself how to so the third part.

Good job. It takes about 2-6 hours of play for most people to start passing 4 feet songs, depending on thier musical inclination, coordination, physical condition, and ability to learn kinisthetically.
With that attidutde for the game, you could go a long way. Just remember that it's not about getting better per se-- it's about having fun and impressing people of the opposite sex.

You know if DDR isn't your thing, then you can always play it's flash version counterpart at.....

www.flashflashrevolution.com

Only with this version you risk carpel tunnel syndrome within 6 hours...that is if you play...that...long.

FFR is horrible!! Compared to other simulators. Stepmainia is better and is almost identical to the DDR Arcade interface.

I have a friend who has DDR and two pads. When I started playing I sucked at first, then I did the training and I got a lot better. But the first time I ever played was at an amusement park, and I lasted about 15 seconds.

The exact same happened to me, and I haven't played since.

Have you tried playing songs that are LESS than four feet?

What the hell? Which mix did you play. There can't be a single mix that doesn't have 1, 2, and 3 foot songs. I need to find this mix and play it!

I'm happy! In the course of 3.5 hours of DDR tonight, (I sat out for about 30 mins, though) I passed my first maniac song!

Wheeee!
