Anime News Network wrote:
Get Ready for Hollywood Mew Mew
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to an an Animation World Network (AWN) article about the 2004 tv season, 4Kids Entertainment has licensed Tokyo Mew Mew and will be airing the show during the Fox Box programming block on Fox. North American children will, however, not be introduced to Tokyo Mew Mew, but rather Hollywood Mew Mew. Regarding the process of localization, 4Kids CEO Al Kahn stated, "By the time we localize the programs kids don’t even know they’re from Japan any more." The statement was exclusively in reference to children's programming, Kahn stated that he felt that labels such as "Anime" are for adults and mean nothing to children.

According to Kahn, Tokyo Mew Mew, along with another show called Winx Club, is an attempt to attract a more female demographic to Fox Box. “Most people seem to have taken a boys’ action, or a neuter position. It’s obvious our business is not only entertainment but merchandising as well, and we think there’s a real void in what’s available for girls. It’s an area where there’s a lack of product in the U.S. We’re going to be adding a couple of those types of shows to the FOX BOX in 04.” He explains that Tokyo Mew Mew is meant to attract viewers of both sexes by providing girls with empowered female heroines and, at the same time, entertaining boys with "cute babes" and lots of action. Although it is aimed at a significantly older demographic, Kahn points to Xena as an example of a show that attracts both men and women.

AWN also asked Kahn if, with his company's goal of attracting a larger audience of girls, he will also look to gain an older audinece by importing "more challenging" titles aimed at an older demographic. While not stating that 4Kids will import titles aimed at an older demographic, he did forecast that such titles would become available in the appropriate timeslots and he stated that 4Kids is looking to "expand our programming opportunities in order to do different things at different times.”

Now, I know that it's been said, time and time again about 4Kids, and half of the time it's only said out of malice for their treatment of such-and-such a show that such-and-such a person likes, but there can no longer be any argument either way about this, since they themselves have said it: 4Kids butchers anime. What inkling of respect I had for them, simply for being a distribution company at all, is now gone. That they can openly say that they don't care where the show came from, so long as they can alter it to make it marketable to an age group which will spend more money on it than any other.....I honestly don't know what to say. The words just stick in my throat. Maybe I'm just behind the curve, or I still place too much into creative integrity, but 4Kids simply goes far beyond the boundaries of simply dubbing and selling anime to America. And now we have it in their own words.

remember, it's not fox, it's 4kids. They are very seperate entities. Think of saturday morning as aire time for rent. Nick is renting on CBS, Discovery is renting on NBC, 4kids is renting on Fox.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse (okay, well, maybe I do), but take a look at this:
http://www.4kidsentertainmentinc.com/home/home.html
Doesn't this look more like a corporate than an entertainment website. How many anime distribution websites have options for investors, information on subsidiaries, and property summiaries?

Let's hope they don't screw up the dubbing.

Character 1: It's great living here in Hollywood! I can't believe how great it is here in Japan!

Good news! It seems that 4Kids is having trouble with their licence for Tokyo Mew Mew.

There is hope for us all yet.

I wasn't sure whether to believe this, and I'm pretty sure a lot more are skeptical, too, so I Emailed this to Christopher MacDonald at Anime News Network. Here's the response I received back, which will, hopefully, clear some things up about this:

Christopher MacDonald, Editor-in-Chief of Anime News Network, wrote:
I do not remember FUNi saying that at their panel, but it's quite possible that I just don't remember it. I have the panel recorded, I'll take a look later.

As for the press release, I don't remember any press release, either. Our original source for the news was the AWN article. They quoted Kahn in the article, so it would be a huge, huge issue if it was untrue. The article would have been pulled, and lawyers would have sent nasty letters.

We have since confirmed that 4Kids has that license through other sources, but I can also tell you that Hollywood Mew Mew probably isn't the name they will be using. More on that later...

The easiest way for Encirosphere to verify the license would be to just call SSA PR to confirm the license. 4Kids isn't much for talking to small press, but the PR company tends to be a bit more willing. Just point them to the article on AWN and ask for confirmation.

I certainly hope people aren't using the lack or a press release as an excuse to continue distribution of fansubs. The license was announced through a reliable and respected media outlet (AWN), that's as good as any press release.

Of course, we all know the fansubs are going to continue, and to be honest, it'd be silly to expect otherwise. Particularly given the way the fan community thinks of 4Kids and the way 4Kids neglects to even think about or respond to the fan community.
