Reports today from Japanese online news publication Nikkei indicate that Namco has approached Sega Corp. with a proposal for a merger between the two companies.
Looking to the future, Namco believes that joining forces with Sega would allow it to remain competitive in the videogame industry. Both Namco and Sega have a strong focus on home and arcade videogame development as well as amusement facility businesses. Additionally, intellectual assets would be combined between the two companies, meaning that such a deal could very well result in seeing our favorite Sega characters as guest stars in a future Soul Calibur title.

In its proposal, Namco has calculated estimated sales of nearly three billion dollars when combined with Sega, which would boost it to the number one position in Japan over Konami's current $2 billion sales total. The proposal also states that Sega would remain as the surviving entity, thus the Namco label would most likely disappear under the Sega brand. The entire deal could, if approved, be carried out as soon as 2004.

Today's news marks the second confirmed entity interested in merging with Sega, the first being Sammy Corp. of Japan in an announcement made last February. A possible third company has also recently expressed interest in joining forces with Sega, but in a more limited scope. U.S.-based publisher Electronic Arts is reportedly interested in taking a stake in Sega's software development operations and playing a financial role on the marketing side of things.

In response to this latest Namco proposal, Sega has called a board meeting for next Wednesday to discuss its options in merging with either Sammy or Namco, or in partnering with Electronic Arts in some capacity. A decision is said to be coming as early as the end of this month.

The already massive worldwide video game market is expected to keep growing, from $20.7 billion in 2002 to up to $30 billion by 2007, claims a new report from research firm DFC Intelligence.

The report, titled "Worldwide Market Forcasts for the Video Game and Interactive Entertainment Industry," makes a number of predictions about the future of the industry. While it argues that Sony will likely remain the market share leader well into the next generation of systems, it anticipates that Microsoft and Nintendo will begin to close the gap in system sales.

"The Playstation 2 could eventually have sales of over 100 million hardware units, thus the Playstation 3 has to be a favorite to continue Sony's market leadership positition," said David Cole, president of DFC Intelligence. "but we expect as much as 50% of Playstation owners to eventually buy an Xbox or GameCube."

"Nintendo is being very aggressive with hardware pricing, software bundling and is doing a better job with third-party relationships." elaborated Cole. "This should really help them in the long term."

The report also notes that Microsoft, despite its position as the new kid on the console block, has still been fairly competitive. The decent performance of the Xbox should theoretically pave the way for a much smoother ride with the company's next system.

"We think Microsoft and the Xbox could be potentially strong in Europe," said Cole. "a region that has been somewhat neglected by video game hardware manufacturers."

Dude. I just got Splinter Cell on the GameCube, and let me tell you, it kicks arse! I haven't gotten to use the GBA OPSAT map thingy because I don't have a link cable, but it's pretty awesome. The levels are longer than I thought, or maybe they just seem long because I have to keep doing them over.

The graphics are amazing, even if they have been slightly "downgraded" from the XBox version, they still look great. Sometimes (rarely), you notice some static lighting, but except for those very rare cases, it's all dynamic lighting.

The sound kind of sets the action mood when you spot a guard, but I find it somewhat annoying. The voice acting is great. They even included an interview with Michael Ironside (the voice of Sam).

The controls are good, you move around with the control stick, bring up your pistol with the R button, and to fire the gun, you fully click the R button. The only problem I have is the camera, which you fully control using the C Stick. You know how on Zelda when you want to move the camera to the left you push the stick to the right? I like that, and it's the exact opposite on this game, you can chage the controls, but I'm not sure if you can just switch the direction of the C stick. Anyway, if you can't, then you can easily get used to it.

Combat is kinda hard, which is understandable, since this game isn't really meant to be a combat game. Also, when I'm lining up a good head shot on a guard, most of the time it hits him, but he doesn't die. Kind of odd for a Clancy game...

I recommend this game to everyone, except for impatient people, this isn't an action game y'know...

In a story put forth by Bloomberg this morning, its been reported that Microsoft is seeking to buy shares of stock in Sega. Citing this morning’s issue of the Yomiuri newspaper (who cited an unidentified official from Sega), the report states the move’s being done as part of a move from Microsoft to expand sales of the Xbox. News on the second game in the Tekki (Steel Battalion) series hasn’t been in abundance as of late and, for that matter, at all save the initial announcement sometime ago. Earlier this morning however, Capcom revealed name of the second title, Tekki Taisen. The naming comes as the first news on the upcoming title and, while details on the game (save that it will be online, something that’s been known for sometime now) weren’t disclosed, with E3 around the corner finer details shouldn’t be too far off.

Acclaim’s been in more than a bit of hot water as of late, with more than a few class action suits against the company. Today, Holzer Holzer & Cannon announced the filing of a class action suit in the United States District Court against Acclaim on behalf of purchasers of traded securities during January 11th 2002 and September 19th 2002. The complaint alleges that Acclaim issued false and misleading statements concerning the company’s financial performance. Specifically, the complaint states Acclaim didn’t reveal it was channel stuffing, experiencing operating problems, had decreased demand on products, and developed games that impeded retail channels. The Class Period, which prompted the situation, was largely in part to Acclaim’s announcement on September 19th 2002 when it issued information announcing operating losses for Q4 2002.

While the decision was made sometime ago to have the Controller S replace the standard Xbox controller here in North America, today its been announced that the same is now happening in Europe. Originally sold as a peripheral, the Controller S has proven popular in Europe since its launch in the region during September 2002.
"The decision to make Controller S standard in Europe was based on feedback from gamers," said Michel Cassius, Senior Director, Xbox Platform and Marketing. "The majority of gamers preferred Controller S to the original Xbox controller, and we saw an opportunity to further improve the Xbox offering to new gamers. Not only is Xbox amazing value, with a built in hard disc and broadband adapter for Xbox Live gaming plus Dolby 5.1 sound and exceptional DVD playback, but it now offers the gamer's choice in controllers."

Auto Modellista, Capcom’s cell-shaded online racer for the PlayStation 2, was released not too long ago, but despite this fact, it appears the game will be making an appearance on the Xbox and GameCube later this year. According to two retail listings (Xbox, GameCube) at retailer EBGames, the title will ship later this year. Auto Modellista currently hasn’t been confirmed by Capcom, or oddly enough Xicat (who the listing puts down as the publisher). On a related note however, it appears a title called Pro Cast Fishing is also coming to the Xbox from Capcom later this year.

Dynasty Warriors 3 made an appearance on the Xbox last year, and this year it appears Dynasty Warriors 4 could be making its way over too. Although unconfirmed by Koei, retail listings this morning show Dynasty Warriors 4 set-to-be released for the Xbox in August.

EGM has revealed the first details and screens of the upcoming PS2 Castlevania title. Produced by Castlevania legend Koji Igarashi, who also worked on Aria of Sorrow, Harmony of Dissonance, and Symphony of the Night, Castlevania for PS2 will be 3D despite earlier rumors to the contrary. Igarashi openly admits that he hates Castlevania 64 and that the latest iteration will be nothing like its subpar N64 brethren.

A title has not yet been decided for the PS2 Castlevania. "We're working on choosing a subtitle" Igarashi said, "but we're running out of ideas for musical references."

Scanned images for the new Castlevania are below. The game is set to release in the States this fall.

More than a little while ago (and that’s putting it loosely) LucasArts announced development of Full Throttle and today, almost a year after the company first announced the game, LucasArts has given the game a new name, and finally announced platform and details. Called Full Throttle: Hell On Wheels, the game has players put in the role of Ben, leader of a motocycle gang called the Polecats, as he fights to defend his way of life from rival games and other such things. The game will have Ben joining up with his friend’s Father Torque and mentor, Maureen Corley, as they bring down a villain and henchmen.
Full Throttle: Hell On Wheels will have over 35 levels spanning 20 environments. The game will also have 40 weapons when released this fall on the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PC platforms. Check the official site below for the first screenshots.

A couple months back we reported that Todd McFarlane’s Soul Calibur 2 toys would be released and today, as the latest from Namco and ToddMcFarlane’s deals, it was announced today that Namco’s developing a Spawn videogame. Yahoo! News revealed today that Take 2 Games plans to branch out its extremely successful Grand Theft Auto franchise to the Nintendo Gamecube and Microsoft Xbox once its exclusivity contract ends with Sony in 2004.

Both Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City are set for release on the Gamecube and Xbox a mere month after Take 2's contract with Sony expires. This will put both games out a month after GTA4 hits shelves but should be a boon for both systems nonetheless.

Take 2 has yet to reveal exact release dates for GTA4 or the ports.

Ever since it was first announced that Microsoft had acquired Rare, well even before, speculation has run rampant concerning the possibilities of an all-new game in the Conker series. Today, in what’s sure to come as good news for most, it seems Microsoft has registered Conker today. Interestingly enough, the listing has it not only shown in videogame form, but also it listed under a variety of other things.
