Square Enix president Yoichi Wada discussed the company's future plans in a recent interview with Famitsu. Wada said that the company is currently focusing on localizing and debugging games for release after April and the development of tools related to its PlayOnline service.

He also revealed that while a collaborative project between Square and Enix teams has not yet been started, he hopes to have one finished in time for release in 2004. When asked who the company's biggest rival is now, Wada said that their rival is not another game publisher, but rather forms of entertainment other than games, such as anime, movies, and the web.

After lower than expected sales for several Gamecube exclusive Capcom titles, the company has decided to loosen its deal with Nintendo, moving some of its future titles to both Playstation 2 and Xbox. The biggest reason for the change of heart lies in the sales of Resident Evil Zero, which missed its 1.42 million unit mark by 300,000 units.

Capcom has stated that Resident Evil 4 will remain a Gamecube exclusive, but that future Resident Evil titles will likely be released to multiple platforms.

Listings on Sega of Japan’s official site have shown an appendix disc, or online component, to Sega GT 2002 and today, Sega of America has officially announced development of Sega GT Online for the Xbox. In development at WOW Entertainment for release during Fall 2003, the game will have over 150 vehicles from the 50s, 60s and 70 to race with from over 20 manufacturers. A stand alone title, it seems that Sega GT Online will be host to more than a few online gameplay modes, playable via Xbox Live of course. These modes will allow players, up to six of them, to race using things such as earned cars and such on the line in bets, as well as pink slips and such.

"'Sega GT Online,' takes racing for pink slips to a whole new level," said Mike Fischer, vice president of marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "If you think you've got what it takes to be the best, you can put your hard-earned car on the line and square off with thousands of gamers online via Xbox Live. Hey, if you lose big you can always talk trash - or grovel and beg for your car back."

Just yesterday we reported the launch of a countdown clock for Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter and this morning, in following that story, it seems that Vivendi Universal Games has signed on actor Henry Rollins, known for work on the movies "The Chase," and "Johnny Mnemonic" (as well as work in bands: Black Flag and Rollins Band), as the voice for the role of leading character Mace Griffin.

"Henry Rollins is the ideal cast for Mace Griffin, a futuristic frontier lawman who is rough around the edges but possesses a keen sense of right and wrong," said Philip O'Neil, SVP Sales & Marketing, Vivendi Universal Games. "Vivendi Universal Games identified Rollins' voice and talents as perfectly in line with its vision for Mace and specifically targeted him for this role."

Much as said in yesterday's story, Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter has players seeking revenge as ex-Special Ops officer Mace Griffin, after being framed for the death of his comrades. The game's in development at Warthog for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube, and will carry an MSRP rating of "M" for mature.

According to Bloomberg reports, Nintendo failed to meet its own projection of selling 10 million GameCubes by the end of March 2003; since the system’s introduction in November 2001, only 5.6 million have been sold. Software sales also lagged: despite Nintendo’s goal of selling 55 million games, sales totaled just 44.5 million copies.

As a result, Nintendo's full-year profits fell 38 percent.

Still, Nintendo’s fortunes started rising at the end of the surveyed period with the help of three recent releases. Zelda: The Wind Waker, released March 24, has sold well over 600,000 copies and is on track to easily clear its first shipment of 1.1 million units. The success of the game has also boosted current GameCube sales by as much as 20 percent. Nintendo is confident about upcoming handheld sales, having recently shipped 800,000 copies of the Gameboy Advance SP to North American shores and stocked 2.2 million combined copies of the new GBA Pokemon Sapphire and Ruby.

Through Namco’s official arcade site, the company recently revealed that it will have the Soul Calibur trading cards from Japan. The cards come in a pack of ten and, according to the recent post, will be there until April 30th. Soul Calibur 2 ships for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube in August. Hit the link above for more.

Acclaim announced earlier today the shipping of the GameCube version of Burnout 2: Point Of Impact and now, with only three weeks until the Xbox debut, Acclaim has announced a slew of exclusive features for the upcoming version. According to Acclaim, due to the amount of exclusive features, the Xbox version is the ‘Developer’s Cut’ version of the game. Included in the upcoming Xbox version will be 21 new decal sets for custom cars, 30 crash junctions (15 more than the PS2 version), and of course online ladder boards for rankings. On the technical side, the Xbox version will have HDTV support at 480pi, 60fps two-player mode, customizable soundtracks and increased polygon count on the vehicles.

Also, Burnout 2 for Xbox will have the soundtrack from the original game as well on the disc, including two tracks for a course that did not make the first game.

In following the seizing of mod-chip and piracy site ISONews, today the Interactive Digital Software Association (IDSA) today released a statement applauding the work of U.S. federal prosecutors who last week sentenced one David M. Rocci to 10-months prison, with five in prison, five at home, three years probation and a fine of $28,500 USD. Rocci, who was sentenced last Friday in the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District Court of Virginia, pleaded guilty in December to charges of trafficking mod chips, an action that’s in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

"The most significant outcome of any enforcement effort is the imposition of appropriate punishment on those convicted for their criminal activities," said Douglas Lowenstein, president of the IDSA. "In his sentencing decision last week, Judge Cacheris recognized the serious harm that the global traffic in mod chips inflicts on the video game industry. We are very grateful for the excellent legal work performed by the federal prosecutors who handled this case."

"Mod chips are a key element to the piracy of video games because they allow people to play pirate games on their consoles. If there were no mod-chips, there would be virtually no video game piracy," said Ric Hirsch, IDSA senior vice president for intellectual property enforcement. "This prosecution is consistent with the purposes underlying DMCA’s anti-circumvention provisions, as it targeted the sale of devices that bypass technologies used by copyright holders to protect their works from illegal use. We look forward to continuing to work with federal authorities on future efforts against those engaged in this kind of illegal activity."

As E3 gets closer, many developers are releasing new information on their upcoming games, and Konami is no exception.

The gaming giant confirmed that Koji Igarashi's PS2-bound Castlevania title would be hitting stateside in November, while its "3D action" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles title would be hitting US shores in October. The title has been announced for release on the PS2, Gamecube, GBA, and PC.

Konami also quickly outlined that Boktai, Kojima's sun-affected GBA project, would be hitting store shelves in September, while Silent Hill 3 is still set to release this August.

Unfortunately, no specific dates beyond the initial months have been announced.

Through Reuters, it was revealed today that Nintendo has trimmed royalty rates on third party developers. The latest in the company’s moves to get more titles on the system, the move comes on the heels of the company falling short of its 10 million-unit target by 44 percent.

Mega Man is one of Capcom’s longest running franchises, spanning 15 years of games. While the series has long been associated with Nintendo and Sony systems, a small listing on the series’ official site seems to suggest that the game could very well be making its way over to the Xbox. While strictly unconfirmed by Capcom at present time, the game’s official site, amongst the fine text at the bottom listing copyright information, has the following: “Xbox and Microsoft are trademarks of Microsoft Corp.” Interesting, no?
