Have you ever dreamt about the day you can buzz around in your very own flying machine? Well, that day may be sooner than you think.

The folks at NASA have built something called “The Highway in the Sky. It's a computer system designed to let millions of people fly whenever they please, and take off and land from wherever they please, in their very own vehicles.

And here’s the good news -- a lot of people are building machines you’ll be able to buy.

One of those people is an inventor named Woody Norris. This week, he will receive America’s top prize for invention. It’s called the Lemelson-MIT award -- a half-million dollar cash prize to honor his life’s work, which includes a brand new personal flying machine.

The full article (4 pages long) can be read here at CBS News.

I've waited so long for this moment. Being able to fly without paying thousands for an airline ticket... I'm so excited! Very Happy

Now you just have to pay $50,000 for the SkyCar... Wink

It's not. It was on the discovery channel years ago. At the time, the guy only had a flying saucer shapped car with cg models of the current one.

So NASA can build a "highway in the sky" while the ATC systems are overloaded? Something isn't right...

The difference is automation. It seems like the NASA project doesn't have to pay people to oversee everything. And if you stay under controlled airspace (in the model airplane zone), the FAA can't complain about it. My question about this would be, who would get access to this server?

And it was in all the news magazines two years after that, and five years before that. My guess is that it's a money tree of investment they shake every now and then.

I thought a german scientist with a foot fetish would make the patent to the flying car.

That was freakin' great.

Oh and one thing I never understood with the flying car is what would happen to the automotive and transportation industry. The fact that we've got tens, maybe hundreds of billions of dollars worth of roads, highways, intersections, signs, bridges, parking garages, parking lots, ext. all designed for cars as we know it. What the hell would happen? Just dig up 200 years worth of construction and return the ground to forest? Or possibly leave personal travel to the sky and goods transport to the roads.

Zechs, consider that there wouldn't be a fast, hard transition. Like most new technologies, these flying contraptions will be expemsive and rare at first. Think DVD players.
And besides, most of the flying cars will probably still get decent milage on normal roads.

And then the system malfunctions and a car flies into a skyscraper and people flip and yell out "OSAMA!!!!!" and then we nuke the middle east and die from the fallout.

Anyone else think this has the potential to be a doomsday scenario?

In the future, all skyscrapers will have anti-aircraft cannons. If an airplane veers of course even one degree, it will be shot down.

Also, the Jetsons will meet the Flintstones.
