Taken from a letter sent back to one of the Anime Death Tentacle Rape Whorehouse (henceforth referred to in all other Shinobo posts as ADTRW) forums goons from SA.

Hello!

Thank you for your interest in The Anime Network. Quite a few people have e-mailed us regarding the sub vs. dub argument. We know very well that a large percentage of anime fans only want to watch subtitled programs. At this time, with our initial launch in Philadelphia, we are only showing dubbed versions of the shows. However, if our launch is successful, we can prove to the cable providers that there is strong enough demand for a 24 hour anime channel. If we can launch a 24 hour channel (on cable and satellite), I am confident that at least some portion of the programming will be shown with subtitles.

Keep supporting The Anime Network! We are working to bring the shows you want to see, how you want to see them, to television.

Again, thanks for contacting us. Stay tuned to http://www.advfilms.com and http://www.theanimenetwork.com for updates and additional information!

I prefer to watch my anime subbed; I am very glad to see a network that will show it that way. Subbed anime preserves the original acting and intentions but you have to watch it several times to get all the nuances that make the scenes. The plus side to dub's is you can watch and don't have to be able to see strait, like at two in the morning. ( ::rolling eyes:: That's never happened to me! )

Honestly, it dosen't matter much since the subtitles will be written by the same people who would write the script for the dub. Little is to be gained (namely the original voices and acting), the names and most of whats left will be formatted for the U.S. audience just like the rest of the televised anime. If the subs were a less stylized translation, I'd say to heck with dubs.

two of the best things about dubs is one) when they actually get good talent to do the work (zelgadis comes to mind) and two) they can change culture driven jokes to something the american audiences will trully understand. Though both are somewhat rare and actually from what I've heard most of those fucking lame ass anime nerd bitches hate it when they do that, but screw them. I want something I can understand (joke and vocalwise) But then agian that's why I get dvd's so I can have both.

I don't care as long as the dub is well done. Otherwise, give me subtitles.

It's good to see that they're pretty open-minded about it.

I don't know. I might just be weird but I sually prefer to watch shows or movies or whatever with subtitles no matter what. I like to understand every little thing they're saying. However, there is a downside to this. I start to become dependent on subs, so much that if i look away from the screen i might not hear what was just said. So my eyes stay glued to the screen and i can't do anything or else i'll feel like i missed something.
Yeah, I know, I weird.

peace

Subs all the way! while it's true that us dumb americans might not get all the Japanese culteral jokes, american voice actors, for the most part, suck. Well, at least compared to the Japanese voice actors. (They do go to school for voice acting, after all.) And most of the time, dubbing directors do an aweful job of selecting voices that are close to the original and sound and pitch and all that stuff. And the dubbed dialogue is actually more stylized than the subtitles, they have to change it to make it fit the mouth flaps. so while it might have basically the same meaning, it would be like me saying 'could i plz have a cold glass of water w/o ice?' and them translating as 'could i have a glass of water?' so yeah, i prefer subtitles. (i mean, have you ever seen Esca dubbed compared to subbed? No one can come close to Dilandau-sama's psycho-insane crazy voice! No one!)

When ever you try to compare an original to a copy things are lost in transition you can't help it. I watch alot of dubs and usually after a couple eps I get used to them even if they aren't superb. Some though are just horrendous I.E. Love Hina, Escaflowne, CCS. Americans just have a hard with reaching the high register and making it sound not forced or overdone.

I have yet to hear a full dub casting that made me grit my teeth and pray for subtitles. Usually they will cast one or two characters wrong and/or give bad direction at times. but nothing to whine bitch and moan about nearly as much as people do. All that I can say is that VA's who're dubbing should watch what they will dub before hand so they can get a real feel for how the character was INTERPRETED as in japanese or whatever language it happens to be.

See, I never had this problem. I've never watched subbed. So no dub has bothered me. ^_^
