Sigourney Weaver will play the female lead in director M. Night Shyamalan's next film, The Woods, for Disney, Variety reported. Weaver joins a cast that includes William Hurt, Joaquin Phoenix, and Bryce Dallas Howard in the thriller that starts shooting Oct. 14 in Philadelphia.

The film is set in 1897 and concerns a close-knit community and a mythical race of creatures residing in the nearby forest. Weaver will play Alice, the mother of Phoenix's character.

Shyamalan, who penned the script, is producing with Scott Rudin and Sam Mercer.

Miramax to Release 'Kill Bill' in 2 Parts
The Associated Press
Jul 17 2003 9:33AM

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Quentin Tarantino's action flick "Kill Bill'' is hitting theaters on the installment plan.
Instead of releasing what would be roughly a three-hour film, distributor Miramax is splitting "Kill Bill'' into two parts of about 90 minutes each.

Part one will debut Oct. 10, the original release date scheduled for the film. A date for the second installment hasn't been determined, though it could come two to six months later, Miramax co-founder Harvey Weinstein told The New York Times in Wednesday's editions.

The move allows writer-director Tarantino to get his full story before audiences and avoid potential cuts to get it down to a more viewer-friendly length. Miramax has feuded with directors in the past on film edits, including Martin Scorsese on "Gangs of New York'' and Billy Bob Thornton on "All the Pretty Horses.''

"Kill Bill,'' Tarantino's first film since 1997's "Jackie Brown,'' stars Uma Thurman as an assassin out for revenge against a hit man who tried to kill her.

Miramax wanted to be accommodating with Tarantino, whose 1994 crime romp, "Pulp Fiction,'' a $100-million hit, helped establish the Disney-owned distributor as a major Hollywood player.

"We believe in him. He's somebody we have a great track record with,'' Miramax spokesman Paul Pflug said Wednesday. "He's one of the key factors why Miramax has become who it is.''

Cutting "Kill Bill'' in two carries risks for Miramax, which will have to pay advertising and distribution costs on two movies instead of one. But if "Kill Bill'' succeeds, Miramax stands to profit because viewers will be paying twice to see the film's two parts.

You dont like Spike Lee?? The whole Spike TV thing I can understand, I mean cmon, he thinks he owns the word 'Spike' or something? BUT, some of the movies he's made (He Got Game, Do The Right Thing), along with those delicious Michael Jordan/Mars commercials make him ok in my book!

Rob Minkoff, who is directing Disney's upcoming movie The Haunted Mansion, told Sci Fi Wire that the movie will be a straight-ahead ghost story, unlike other recent haunted-house films. "I think the tone is going to be different," he said in an interview at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Such films as 13 Ghosts and The Haunting are "slightly more like slasher movies than anything else. And I don't think that this is."

The Haunted Mansion, based on the Disney theme park rides, stars Eddie Murphy as a real-estate agent whose family winds up stranded in a decrepit New Orleans manse with a number of spectral inhabitants. "This is meant to be like a ghost story in the classic sense of it's a story that you want to get involved in and interested in, and you can relate to," Minkoff said. "So it's not just a guy's family comes and meets a lot of scary ghosts in the house. Sometimes it's what you don't see that can be kind of creepy."

Minkoff added that he and his production team were allowed to walk through the ride at Disneyland, with all the lights on, for inspiration. "The big surprise was that in the Madame Leota chamber, they said, 'Whatever you do, do not touch the tablecloth.'" Why? "Because people, as they go through the ride, they spit," Minkoff said. "They said, 'Be careful not to touch anything.'" So that's the scariest secret of the Haunted Mansion? "Oops. I should have hesitated," Minkoff said with a laugh. "It was terrifying. Parents will be keeping their kids from it. 'You're not going on that ride!'" The Haunted Mansion opens Nov. 26.

Don't tell Cooter about Britney Spears stepping into Daisy Duke's shorty shorts for a Dukes of Hazzard movie.

"It's a ludicrous idea," said Ben Jones, who played good ol' mechanic Cooter on the 1979-85 TV series, meaning no offense to the popster. "Nobody has ever worn Daisy Dukes as well as Daisy Duke."

Spears' name was floated as possible Daisy material in Thursday's Hollywood Reporter. The trade paper also noted Ashton Kutcher and Paul Walker were "expressing their interest" in playing Daisy's General Lee-driving kin, with trucker-hat fan Kutcher presumably eyeing the role of Luke (the dark-haired Duke) and Walker hot for Bo (the fair-haired Duke). The movie's said to be in the script-writing stage at Warner Bros.

Reached for comment Thursday at Jones' Sperryville, Virginia, club and museum, Cooter's Place, the self-described Dukes historian said the way he sees it, Daisy Duke was, and is, Catherine Bach, just as John Schneider's Bo Duke, Tom Wopat's Luke Duke and he's, well, Cooter.

"When people think of The Dukes of Hazzard they think of us," Jones, 61, said. "Why don't you get Bo Duke to play Bo Duke? Why don't you get Luke Duke to play Luke? Why don't you get Cooter to play Cooter?"

Jones is not the first to pose such questions. In 2001, David Soul, Hutch of TV's Starsky & Hutch, expressed similar sentiments when Ben Stiller became attached to star in a big-screen version of the 1970s cop show. Soul's lobbying efforts failed--mostly. Starsky & Hutch, the movie, is due to open next March, with Stiller as Starsky and Owen Wilson as Hutch. But Soul and original costar Paul Michael Glaser were invited back for cameos.

Jones, who, following his days under the General Lee's hood, went on to serve two terms in Congress, said he understands that movie producers crave young stars. He even has a suggestion on how to keep both Dukes loyalists and anxious studio execs happy: Let the Kutchers, Walkers and Spearses play the Duke family's next generation; let Wopat, Schneider and Bach cameo as their original Duke selves. And most of all, let Dukes be Dukes.

"If they try to do some sort of smart-ass thing, it won't work," Jones said.

The Dukes of Hazzard was a critically-panned, but audience-embraced Top 10 hit through seven seasons on CBS. The show focused on the adventures of two good-looking cousins (Schneider and Wopat), their really fast car (a tricked-out 1969 Charger dubbed the General Lee), their even better-looking cousin (Bach), their wizened father figure (Denver Pyle as Uncle Jessie), and the corrupt Hazzard County kingpin (Sorrell Booke as Boss Hogg) who vowed, in vain, to "get them Duke boys!"

The series hit a road bump in 1982 when Wopat and Schneider held out for a bigger cut of Dukes tie-in merchandise. The powers-that-be played hardball with the actors, writing out Bo and Luke and introducing Coy (Byron Cherry) and Vance (Christopher Mayer).

The fake Dukes didn't take. One sub-standard ratings' season later, Wopat and Schneider returned. According to Jones, the experience should serve as a lesson to those would try to fill out Bo and Luke's jeans in a big-screen version.

"It was a disaster," Jones said of the Dukes' lost season. "They were nice guys, but it was a disaster. They were just blocks of wood."

Jones will recall happier Dukes days next weekend at the third annual Dukesfest, where upwards of 20,000 will converge at the Sperryville Cooter's Place to celebrate Hazzard County's finest. This year's event will mark the show's 25th anniversary. (Production on the series began in the fall of 1978.)

Original stars James Best (Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane), Sonny Shroyer (Deputy Enos Strate) and Rick Hurst (Deputy Cletus Hogg) are among those expected to appear, along with Jones.

In past years, fans have traveled from as far away as South America and Italy to pay homage to what Jones likens to a "permanent piece of Americana--a B-movie Western with cars."

In the end, Jones said he wishes the makers of the Dukes movie well, and he wishes they'll stay true to the spirit of the show.

And one more thing...

"Let 'em know Cooter's available to play Cooter," Jones said, laughing.

The sale is complete, U.S. billionaire Haim Saban took control of German broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 by acquiring a majority stake from the insolvent parent house KirchMedia. The deal was finalized August 9, 2003 with Kirch’s creditor banks and the transaction is expected to be completed this week. Saban acquired 36% of the share capital of ProSiebenSat.1, which gives him and his investors 72% of the company’s voting rights.

The trades report that Saban is believed to be paying $596.3 million and providing $318 million to bolster the broadcaster. Saban and his backers will also likely buy up listed preferred shares in ProSieben, which would have to be at the minimum price set by German law, which comes to about $6.92.

"We are committed to a long-term business plan and are excited about the opportunity to enter the German market as at this time," Saban said in a statement. "We are confident that ProSeiben has the potential to become the most successful broadcasting company in Europe," he added.

Saban’s first attempt to buy the broadcaster collapsed two months ago. This time, he spread the risk with five private equity firms, which was a more agreeable formula to Kirch’s creditors.

Saban plans to strengthen ProSieben's ties to Hollywood he told German paper, WELT AM SONNTAG, and will expand its home entertainment and merchandising business. The Israeli-born Saban also used the occasion to criticize German and European TV coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, citing it was one-sided. While vowing to not interfere journalistically, he said broadcasters must present both sides to remain balanced and give viewers what they want.

Saban expressed optimism about the state of the economy in Germany. He said, "The advertising market is shrinking and there’s unemployment. But does any sane person really believe that Germany will experience a crisis like the one Japan in is going through or that it will continue for another 10 years! I’ll say to you, any time is a good time to invest in Germany."

I wonder who they'll get to play Venom in the later movies. I first thought of Schwarzenegger, but with Arnold stepping out of filming for a political career...

Post subject: No Oscars for Matrix sequels?
When it comes to Oscar consideration, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences isn't entertaining any two-for-one offers.

The issue arises because this year there will be two Matrix movies and, possibly, two Kill Bill movies that could all qualify for Academy consideration. And that has left their respective studios, Warner Bros. Pictures and Miramax Films, strategizing over how to optimize their Oscar chances -- even though the 2004 Oscar ceremonies won't take place until Feb. 29.

The situation is considered unprecedented by Academy officials. Several movies have been carved out of material that was shot back to back: 1973's The Three Musketeers was followed in 1974 by The Four Musketeers; "Back to the Future Part II came out in 1989, followed by Back to the Future Part III in 1990; and The Lord of the Rings series, which began with The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001 will conclude with The Return of the King this year. But in those cases, the individual parts of each mega-movie were released in different years, so there was no possibility that the pieces of one whole would compete directly against each other.

This year, though, boasts The Matrix Reloaded, the second film in the Wachowski brothers' Matrix series, released May 15, which will be followed by the series finale, The Matrix Revolutions, on Nov. 5.

In the case of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, Miramax has decided to divide the material into two films and will release Kill Bill Vol. 1 on Oct. 10. The company has not yet announced when it will release Kill Bill Vol. 2. While most observers expect it won't arrive until 2004, there have been some discussions within Miramax of an Oscar qualifying weeklong run by the end of the year.

The discussions have included the possibility of a qualifying run for Vol. 2 by itself as well as reconnecting Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 for an Oscar qualifying run as one movie. But if Vol. 2, in some form were to play Los Angeles by Dec. 31, the Oscar cut-off date, Miramax would then find itself facing the same quandary as Warners.

Since the two Matrix movies were shot within a continuous 240-day period by the same filmmaking team, Warners considered advancing the argument that the Academy should consider them as one movie -- albeit one containing a six-month intermission. But according to sources on both sides of the discussions, that possibility was never seriously raised in recent conversations between Warners and the Academy.

According to Academy executive administrator Ric Robertson, "Two separate releases with two separate marketing campaigns -- even if they were four-walled together as one movie -- would have to be considered two different films."

So instead, Warners raised a separate question: Even though both movies will have completed the basic requirement for Academy consideration by having been publicly exhibited in Los Angeles county for one week, would it be permissible for the studio to qualify only one film for Oscar consideration?

After reviewing its own requirements, the Academy informed the studio there was nothing in the rule book to prevent the studio from submitting one of the films and not the other. As a result, Warners is currently contemplating submitting only Matrix Revolutions for Oscar consideration.

That particular Hobson's choice, according to those close to the situation, may be born of strategic necessity.

The first Matrix, released in 1999, was nominated -- and went on to win -- Oscars in four categories: editing, sound, sound effects editing and visual effects. If Warners were to enter both parts of the Matrix in this year's race, it theoretically could win two nominations in a given category, since both halves would have to be treated as individual films.

But that's far from a sure thing. In the tightly contested technical categories, voters could be expected to resist awarding two slots to the same group of filmmakers. In fact, earlier this year, individual branches of the Academy struggled with how to treat The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers after bestowing 13 nominations and four Oscars on The Fellowship of the Ring the previous year. The music branch ruled that Howard Shore, who won an Oscar for his score for the first film, didn't warrant consideration for a nomination for the second film. However, the movie did win the visual effects Oscar two years running.

Rather than see the votes within the individual branches divide between the two Matrix installments -- and run the risk of canceling each other out -- Warners has decided it may be wiser to promote the merits of Revolutions alone.

Miramax, which had informal conversations with Academy officials last week, is still formulating its strategy. But it was informed of the Academy's response to Warners' queries, which would similarly apply if Vol. 2 were exhibited before the end of the year.

Even if Miramax does favor a second release by year's end, however, it may not prove practical. According to sources, Tarantino is currently concentrating on completing Vol. 1 and has not yet turned his full attention to finalizing Vol. 2.

"Once Quentin completes Vol. 2, then we'll make any decisions regarding its release," said a Miramax spokesman.

Executives at Warner Bros. declined to comment on that studio's developing plans.

Miramax has always been a pain in the ass when it comes to film edits. Evil or Very Mad

Quentin Tarantino is the type of director that could make a 3-hour film like that work. Yet, Miramax chooses to be a bitch. Rolling Eyes
