Yo peeps. I'm posting in the SA Forums about GRW week, and listening to some of the elitist otaku complain about the edits.

So, I wrote this
Quote:
In response to the last few hate posts about Toonami, I quote someone I have high reguard for on the TI boards:

"Silly otaku, Toonami is for kids! Get over it."

Thank you Tyler/Zogg. You rock.

But then I get this:
Quote:
Saber came out of the closet to say:
Toonami is for children to young adults, actually. CN knows the kind of audience they draw with Dragonball Z.

And still this isn't a matter of being an otaku, or even particularly liking anime. It's about principles. If they're going to edit a show the way they've done (remove plot points and dialogue RANDOMLY) why bother showing it? You're not doing the show or the viewers any justice by showing a mangled version of something that didn't need to be touched in the first place, if it had been in the proper place.

Toonami is for a younger audience, though not as young as you're suggesting. This is why I said both shows should have gone on Adult Swim.

Help me correct this d00d's (or my own) mistake. What is the actual demographic that Toonami attracts/is advertised for?

We can propably see what their target demo is by looking at the program content ratings. If most of the stuff is Y to Y7, we can safely assume their main demo is 7-12 years. Of course with GRW and the programs that fall in this line, we can assume that they're trying to draw more viewers from a higher age bracket. However, by observing their cencorship practices, we can see that they are not making much of an effort to move completely into a higher bracket, so my answer would be: Toonami's target audience is in the range of children to pre-teens of ages 7-12. Of course you could always e-mail Toonami and (politely) ask them what their ideal audience is made of.

Toonami made DBZ and Gundam popular. More the former. MUCH MORE, in fact. Now tell me, as evidenced by Tyler's infamous "stupid ball Z" post on the main page a while back, how old do you think Toonami's largest demographic is? Sure, they've got shows that appeal to age groups much higher than that (and from the Kids' WB runoff, lower), but in truth idiots who watch Toonami for kewl animation, explosions, and pretty much anything skin-deep about an anime series are the vast majority. That's why the Shakespeare-triumphing tale of DBZ thrives today and Mobile Suit Gundam....rests in peace.

Of course, this can be exploited, as Shinobo already knows.

I completely understand that they were almost forced to edit them. I don't fault them for that decision, and neither, I think, does that guy. What we are complaining about is that they chose to put it in such a position, knowing that it wouldn't attract more of their demographic. Yes, Eva is certainly unsuitable for children, and any of it shown at such a time would require editing. My response to this is, "don't show it where it would need to be edited." Either CN is being underhanded and mean, or they're just plain dumb as a doornail. A good description of Eva's requisite maturity level follows:

If you can't handle the worst of it, you won't get the rest.

Once ASA was formed, the shows on Toonami were geered to a younger audience almost instantly. CN is a business, so they try to attract the most people possible. Look at the lineup pre-GRW: Zoids:CC, G Gundam, DB, DBZ, Batman Beyond, Transformers. If you assume that people watch Transformers for the nostalgia value (like me), then the age target increases as the time progresses. Older kids get home later on average cuz they do stuff afterschool. Thus, having the target age slightly as the night goes on is smart business.

ASA gets all the really adult shows (seeing as how more adults are able to watch them at the times that they air), and we don't know what GRW will do yet. It depends on how the ratings turn out. Then we can figure out what their plans are.

And all these GRW-nay-sayers are bugging me. Shinobo, if you like any of the points I made in the 'Toonami is Dead' topic, (I don't know that you will, I'm just putting this out there) feel free to use them on the SA boards. I don't even care if you give me credit.

Don't get me wrong: I love the idea of Giant Robot Week. I do dissent with either the time they put it or the programming they gave it. There is no reason to put Eva at 4:30 in the afternoon! They probably could have gotten away with putting GRW at 9pm without much editing. I know that the first two episodes of Evangelion are not any worse than, say, an episode of Law & Order. (Approximately the same level of maturity is required for appreciation, too) It's not like they're using that time slot for anything we haven't seen 13 times if we cared to, right?
