Namco has revealed that they will be showing Star Fox Armada, the next game in the long heralded series, at this year''s Electronic Entertainment Expo, starting May 14th. Unlike Rare's Star Fox Adventures, Armada goes back to the tried and true dog fighting mechanics of old Star Fox games.
While the game is being developed by Namco, it looks as if it will only be playable at Nintendo's booth. Stay tuned for a possible playtest once E3 swings around. _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes to be shown at E3. Here's Planet GameCube's Preview:
Preview: Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Metal Gear finally comes to GameCube. Read all about it in our full preview.
Last updated: 05/01/2003
Metal Gear has been always proven to be a hot property. Essentially selling the PS2 before it was even released, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty had captured the hype and the imagination of people years before it was even playable. On the original PlayStation, Metal Gear Solid: Tactical Espionage Action was considered a powerful killer app and was a hit with both critics and gamers. Combining compelling gameplay, an interesting plot coupled with professional voice-acting, and cinematic cutscenes, the game was an instant hit among PSX owners. Many Nintendo fans wished for the same action, but they were never offered a comparable experience on the N64.
Fast forward to the year 2003, and things have suddenly changed. A few months ago Mr. Miyamoto let it slip that there was indeed a Metal Gear Solid game in development for GameCube. Since then everyone has been wondering if this title is an entirely new game, a port of MGS2: SoL, or a remake of the original Metal Gear Solid.
The answer will probably come as a surprise. Nintendo's biggest coup from Konami stars none other than the world-renowned Solid Snake in a remake of the original Metal Gear Solid, now with the subtitle The Twin Snakes. Not only will the graphics be redone, but the gameplay will be upgraded to include all of the new features found in MGS 2. We assume this includes everything from first-person aiming to dragging bodies into lockers, plus whatever brand new features might be in the works. It has also been rumoured that the game will utilize GBA connectivity for things such as Snake's radar and Codec. While the new subtitle is a reference to the game's story, it is possible that some multiplayer features are being added. But here's the real kicker: the title is in development not in KCEJ, and not even at NCL. The team of people who have been assigned this difficult task is Silicon Knights, the creators of Eternal Darkness. Being that Silicon Knights is a second-party, it’s clear that Nintendo is putting up considerable cooperation and investment to bring Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes to the GameCube.
Graphically, the game is supposed to mirror the jump in quality that the Resident Evil remake saw, and knowing the sound aficionados at SK, MGS will probably be redone in Dolby Pro Logic II. The game is still going to be published by Konami, but the title will be featured prominently at Nintendo's press conference and booth at E3. It's understandable how much Nintendo will be pushing this title, as it marks the first time since the NES that the Metal Gear series has graced a Nintendo console.
Metal Gear Solid plays differently than most action titles. Controlling the world-famous spy Solid Snake, players are encouraged to sneak past the enemies instead of fighting. Snake has many moves and tools at his disposal, most significantly a radar that helps track enemy movement. By using this information along with his natural skills, Snake must infiltrate a supposed nuclear waste facility in effort to stop a band of terrorists from launching a nuclear weapon. By using weapons and items he finds on dead guards, or in the back of empty trucks, Snake will gather a considerable arsenal to combat the great number of opposing enemy soldiers.
Gameplay revolves around Snake avoiding soldiers by ensuring he isn't seen, heard, or caught on camera. Enemies have blind spots that can be exploited, and they can also be distracted by knocking on walls. Alternatively, you can hide behind walls and then pounce on the enemies, snapping their necks. This level of violence netted a Mature rating for the PSX original, and we can probably expect no less for the remake.
The story is a major part of the Metal Gear Solid games. A reluctant Solid Snake has been forced into helping his old commander, Jim Campbell, in turning back a terrorist threat on a nuclear waste disposal plant. Members of FOX-HOUND, his former squad, have rebelled and are now threatening to launch a nuclear missile with the giant Metal Gear mech. Since Snake is the only one who has taken out the mechanical beast multiple times, Jim Campbell and the Pentagon essentially blackmail the old secret service agent into complying. The story is told through frequent radio conversations and real-time cut-scenes.
We’re still gathering intelligence on Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. Expect hands-on impressions and plenty of commentary from Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack at E3.

It wasn’t too long ago that we were able to get a plethora of exclusive information from Kemco on some of its upcoming titles. During that report, we brought forth first word that the company was developing another title based on a DC Comics character. Today, following that report, Kemco U.S.A. has announced that Lobo will be the title, and it’s set for release on the Xbox and PlayStation 2 during 2004. Lobo will fit into the third-person shooter genre, and has players taking on the role of the inter-galactic bounty hunter as he takes down the ten biggest bounties on the world’ most wanted list to earn some cash. The game will have 10 environments to play through, and will have such weapons as knives, chains, guns, grenades and rockets; as well as the ability to morph into several creatures. Moreover, Lobo will have access to vehicles such as motorcycles and Space Dolphin. _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar

The Japan Times reports that Sega will not be taking advantage of Namco's May 9th deadline to accept the company's merger offer. Sources inside Sega's parent company CSK Corp. say they have decided to accept Sammy Entertainment's merger offer instead, citing Sammy's stronger financial resources. Sega is waiting for a complete audit of Sammy's finances before making an official announcement.

The Simi Valley, California-based company Tapwave has announced its own Gameboy Advance competitor called the "Helix." Helix offers a Palm Operating System to allow PDA functions while sporting a 3D graphics system for Playstation level graphics. The Helix is horizontally oriented compared to its vertically oriented Palm cousins and is aimed at adults who have "outgrown" Gameboy Advance. Some of its features include:
Palm OS that can run current Palm applications
Color screen with a higher resolution and color depth than the Gameboy Advance
Backlit screen
Analog stick, trigger buttons, and 4 face buttons
Can play MP3's and display photos
Stereo speakers
Though Tapwave has not named an exact price for the new handheld, the company did say it would cost about the same as a new console, putting it in around the $200-$300 range. It seems a goodly number of people are trying to topple Nintendo's hand held monopoly with the Helix and Nokia & Sega's N-Gage. _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar

In case you haven't been following this story, Sega has recently been in negotiations with two other game publishers, Namco and Sammy, regarding a possible merger with one of them. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports today that Sega and Sammy have called off any plans to merge. Sega's largest shareholder, CSK Corp, reportedly preferred Sammy over Namco as early as yesterday but has since changed its mind. Both Sega and Sammy are expected to make an official announcemnt on the matter shortly.
The Nihon Keizai Shimbun cites disputes over the equity ratio as the main reason for the cancellation, but Namco's interest in Sega may have also been a factor. Negotiations between Sega and Namco are reportedly still underway.

Infogrames announced today that it would be changing its name to Atari Inc. The French game company has been using the name on some of its key titles, such as Neverwinter Nights, Enter the Matrix, and the recently-released Ikaruga, since it aquired the name and assets from Hasbro in 2001.
While it was formerly used as an imprint for the Infogrames titles aimed at more hardcore gamers, the company chose to adapt the moniker following a precise strategy, according to CEO Bruno Bonnell. It feels that the new name will help boost its awareness and profile with all consumers.
The newly-branded company has gotten good reactions from investors as well; upon changing its stock market ticker to ATAR this morning, its shares rose 23%.
The Atari name has been one of the most traded in the history of gaming. Previous owners Hasbro acquired it from JTS Corp. in 1998, who in turn had purchased the company in 1996, the last time that Atari operated as a stand-alone organization. In the past it has also been owned by corporations such as Warner Communications. _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar

Microsoft Introduces New Pricing for Xbox Live
Reuters
May 8 2003 4:08PM
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) on Thursday introduced a more flexible pricing plan for its Xbox Live online video game service, including a planned free trial period, and raised the price on the basic starter kit.
Microsoft, which is expected to roll out a number of new audio and video services related to Xbox Live at next week's Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, said subscribers will have the option of a $5.99 monthly fee in North America as of this fall.
A one-year renewal or new subscription will be $49.99, while the Starter Kit, which includes a headset for voice communications and some bundled game products, will sell for $69.99, a hike from the current $49.99 price.
Microsoft also said a two-month free trial for the service will be 'widely available' this fall.
Xbox Live was launched in North America last November, allowing Xbox users to compete against each other with the console's built-in Ethernet port and the voice headset. The company boasts hundreds of thousands of subscribers.
Microsoft also said it would begin to make the voice headset available as a stand-alone item for $29.99. _________________ "When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."- C.S. Lewis
