11 Films 'Toon Up for Oscar
by Josh Grossberg, E! Online
Nov 4, 2004, 1:45 PM PT

A family of superheroes is vying for Oscar glory. And we're not talking about the Justice League.

Disney-Pixar's buzz-heavy 'toon The Incredibles, which opens Friday, tops this year's slate of eligible contenders for this year's Best Animated Feature Film Oscar unveiled by the folks at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

But giving the superheroes a run for their money will be DreamWorks' megahit sequel Shrek 2 and undersea adventure Shark Tale (which happens to feature a lead character named Oscar), along with Nickelodeon's upcoming The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and director Robert Zemeckis' The Polar Express, featuring Tom Hanks in six animated parts.

Thursday's announcement means Zemeckis can exhale: the Oscar-winning director had feared his film might not qualify in the animation category because it uses a brand new technique called performance capture, for which Hanks and costars acted out their roles in live action, while technicians later converted the performances to CGI.

Other films qualifying include Disney's Home on the Range and Teacher's Pet; DreamWorks' cyberpunk anime thriller by Mamoru Oshii, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence; and Warner Bros.' Clifford's Really Big Movie. Sky Blue (a.k.a Wonderful Days) and The Legend of Buddha round out the list of contenders.

With 11 deemed eligible, the Best Animated Feature category will be activated for the fourth year in a row. The Academy's 40-member governing board will now whittle the list down to three finalists by Dec. 14.

This year's troika will be announced with the rest of the Academy Award nominations on Jan. 25.

To qualify for Best Animated Feature, a film must be a minimum of 70 minutes, contain more than 75 percent animation and utilize one of three styles: traditional cel drawing, stop-motion or computer-generated animation. They must also open theatrically in Los Angeles prior to Dec. 31.

The film is the most expensive anime feature ever produced at $20 million and began production in 1995. The film screened at both the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals. Turner Classic Movies will debut a new monthly half hour program tomorrow morning (Saturday 10/6 at 9:30am EST/ 6:30am PST), CARTOON ALLEY, a showcase for classic cartoons in the Turner library.

Now that Cartoon Network has abandoned their classic library (Boomerang doesn't count in my book - and besides, the rumors of that channel going with exclusively pre-school programming have been getting hotter with each passing month), it's great to see TCM pick up the ball, and hopefully present these cartoons as the classic films they are. The first outing highlights Warner Bros. cartoons with Clark Gable charicatures (Hollywood Steps Out, Coo-Coo Nut Grove, Malibu Beach Party), the second episode (in December) contains Christmas themed cartoons and the third (during January) features various Oscar nominees. The show is tucked away at wee hours so set your VCR's & TiVo machines. Consult the schedule on their website for showtimes.

According to Daily Variety, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has officially qualified 11 films for competition in the animated feature race. The 11 are Disney-Pixar's "The Incredibles," Disney's "Home on the Range" and "Disney's Teacher's Pet"; DreamWorks' "Shrek 2," "Shark Tale" and "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence"; Paramount-Nickelodeon's "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie"; Warner Bros. "Polar Express" and "Clifford's Really Big Movie" (two ends of the spectrum, both distributed by WB); Masquerade Films' "Sky Blue" (Korean anime); and Pentamedia's "The Legend of Buddha" (traditional 2D from India).

The Academy has an eight-16 rule for animation features: For there to be a category with three nominations, eight features must open within a given year. For five nominations, there must be 16 or more. The Academy's executive committee of the short films/feature animation branch declared these 11 eligible. That panel technically has the right to state that there will be no category this year, but it is expected to recommend to the board of governors on Dec. 14 that the award be given. Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 25, and winners will be unveiled Feb. 27.

Excluded of the running is TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE due to the fact it was made with marionettes, hence, is not animated. The movie was considered as a live-action puppetry and will be available for other statuettes.

According to IESB, Salma Hayek has joined Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, and Keith Richards in the sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean, which the website refers to with the oft-rumored title of Pirates of the Caribbean: Treasures of the Lost Abyss.

Moviehole.net reports that No.5, SHORT CIRCUIT's robot, might still be alive.

The website did a little digging and contacted the original penner of the movie and got an intriguing answer: "I am not at liberty to say". Could this mean that there are talks about a third movie?

It is not a done deal yet but with the technological improvements made in the biz since SHORT CIRCUIT 2 was made, SHORT CIRCUIT 3 could be a project to look closer at.

SHORT CIRCUIT was released in 1986 and made $40,697,761. It's sequel made $21,630,088.

Animated News' Christian just got back from the ASIFA-Hollywood screening of The Incredibles (one of the perks of membership . . . hint, hint) at the Writer's Guild Theater in Beverly Hills. Brad Bird was scheduled to attend but couldn't make it. Pete Docter (director of Monsters, Inc.) was there to fill in and in the Q&A session afterwards somebody asked Pete if Pixar would ever do a traditionally animated film. Pete replied with, "If the story ever called for it we are certainly open to it. The notion that 2D, traditional animation is dead is absurd." This remark was responded to with tremendous applause from the audience. Another tidbit learned from Animated News' fly-on-the-wall perspective is that the upcoming Pink Panther movie starring Steve Martin will have an animated introduction directed by Bob Kurtz.

Chicago Sun Times columnist Cindy Pearlman spoke to The Incredibles writer-director Brad Bird in her latest installment. Bird claims that there are no plans at this time for a sequel to The Incredibles. Neither Bird nor Pearlman notes that Disney retains the rights to make Incredibles direct-to-video sequels, owing Pixar only an 8% royalty.

While girls gleefully wear Cinderella's gown, don Jasmine's slippers or otherwise play with toys from the panoply of Disney Princess characters, boys are not clamoring for Prince Charming merchandise.

"Boys don't seem that enamored of princes," said Robert Iger, president of Walt Disney.

That gender divide is a problem for Disney, which did score a hit with boys with the "Toy Story" movies of the 1990s but which has faltered in recent years with action-adventure films such as the animated "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" and "Treasure Planet."

Its Princess line of tiaras, flouncy gowns, toys, books and videos, meanwhile, is a worldwide business generating sales of more than $2 billion annually for Disney and its licensees.

GIRLS CHARACTERS

In a hunt for the bounty of the boy's market, Disney aims to match the more than $2 billion in sales annually from its Princess line by creating more boy-driven films.

MOVIE / PRINCESS / YEAR OF ORIGINAL RELEASE / DOMESTIC GROSS* IN MILLIONS

"Aladdin" Jasmine 1992 $217.4

"Snow White and Snow White 1937 $178.0

the Seven Dwarfs"

"Beauty and the Beast" Belle 1991 $171.3

"Pocahontas" Pocahantas 1995 $141.6

"Mulan" Mulan 1998 $120.6

"The Little Mermaid" Ariel 1989 $110.0

"Cinderella" Cinderella 1950 $93.2

"Sleeping Beauty" Aurora 1959 $51.6

*INCLUDES ALL RE-ISSUES

(EXHIBITOR RELATIONS CO..; THE WALT DISNEY CO. )

Disney is hoping for a turnaround in this trend with the testosterone-driven "The Incredibles," the fourth film from its five-picture deal with Pixar Animation Studio.

"The Incredibles" opened this weekend to a whopping $70.5 million. It is supported by one of the largest marketing campaigns ever used for an animated film. The campaign includes a line of action figures, remote control cars and video games aimed at boys.

Next year's "Cars," also a Disney-Pixar product, is expected to be even more appealing to boys. By then, Disney will have switched its master toy contract for feature films from Hasbro to Mattel, which is planning to use its Hot Wheels car line to market the film.

"I think Michael (Disney CEO Michael Eisner) looked at those last two movies, and we certainly looked at them from the consumer-products side, and said, 'These are right in the sweet spot of what boys do,' " said Andy Mooney, chairman of Disney Consumer Products. "These are the first ones that we've seen that are very distinctively 'boy,' even more, I think, than 'Toy Story' was."

Characters from "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2," including Woody and Buzz Lightyear, have been perennial favorites of boys since the first movie made its debut in 1995.

But Woody and Buzz are exceptions. Disney's cupboards are filled with characters that appeal to girls, including Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. The Winnie the Pooh characters are skewed heavily to girls. The girls' market for toys, books, videos and other products is at least twice the size as that for boys. This is true especially for products closely associated with a character, such as Snow White or Belle from "Beauty and the Beast."

Marketing similar items to boys is more difficult, in part because they outgrow particular characters more quickly as their attention shifts to sports and other interests. Boys also don't respond as much as girls do to products based on a single movie -- not even films such as "The Hulk" or "Harry Potter."

With "Toy Story," Disney kept the franchise alive with direct-to-video sequels and a TV show, essential elements to building long-term revenue from characters. It is planning at least two more sequels.

New strategies

The company's approach to character marketing and licensing has changed since it hired Mooney, a Nike marketing veteran, in 2000. While Snow White, Ariel and similar characters had been around for years, no one had thought of marketing them under one umbrella; now they're all part of the Princess line.

Disney didn't have the same option, given its dearth of boy-oriented characters, and it failed to develop a battalion of toys, costumes, games and other items geared to last year's surprise smash hit, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."

It doesn't intend to repeat the mistake.

"Given the fact that we have sequels in the works, we have an opportunity to create a pirates franchise as we did with princesses," Iger said. "What I would love is to have any boy in the world who thinks of pirates to think of ... Disney pirates."

Iger established a regular monthly meeting of department heads to focus on the company's character franchises and to develop movies, TV shows, books, toys and other ways to expand market share. One meeting focused exclusively on boys.

"We don't have the strength in terms of core set of character assets to just snap or fingers and end up with an umbrella over the boys' category," Iger said.

Disney is in the process of either creating or buying boy-friendly franchises and characters.

On television, the company has created the Jetix brand to group its slate of boys' shows, including "Power Rangers," which it acquired as part of its purchase of Fox Family Worldwide in 2001.

Shows such as "Lizzie McGuire" and "Kim Possible," skew the Disney cable channel in favor of girls by a ratio of 60-to-40, said Rich Ross, president of Disney Channel Worldwide. But the goal is to have the Jetix shows skew toward boys by a ratio of 70-to-30.

From a merchandising standpoint, Disney knows it would be hard to replicate with boys' toys the magnitude of the success it has had with the Princess line. Mooney is shooting for a few smaller successful boy franchises that will add up over the next five years.

Mooney, with his experience marketing athletic equipment, says he understands the play patterns of boys.

"We're pretty simple animals -- let's build things up, tear things down, fight and race and play sports," Mooney says with a laugh. "There's not much else we really get into."

Court rules in favor of Roy Disney
By Jon Friedman, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 3:58 PM ET Nov. 9, 2004

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Former Walt Disney board members Roy Disney and Stanley Gold said Tuesday that the Delaware Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Roy Disney in their ongoing dispute with the entertainment and media company.

The two said Delaware's top court had denied the company's motion to affirm a ruling by the Delaware Court of Chancery.

Roy Disney added that the court agreed to hear his appeal that he be allowed to disclose certain information obtained from the corporation.

The chancery court had previously denied his petition to disclose this information.

"I am gratified that the Delaware Supreme Court will be considering on the merits the important issues we have raised concerning stockholder rights to examine and utilize corporate books and records under Section 220 of the Delaware General Corporation Law," Roy Disney said in a statement.

A spokesman for Walt Disney (DIS: news, chart) couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Roy Disney and Gold have waged a relentless campaign to bring serious changes to the business. They have been vocal opponents of Michael Eisner, the chief executive of Disney.

Eisner relinquished his title of chairman after Walt Disney shareholders gave him a vote of no confidence at the March shareholder meeting in Philadelphia.

Disney's stock was 14 cents higher to $26.18 Tuesday just before the bell.

Wonder what Roy'll say now that the gag's off... Twisted Evil
