Johnny's theory/fantasy of the moment: What if D is really a darker, older version of the character Alucard from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night? After spending a thousand years or so in deep slumber, he just reawakens in a hellish future, and undergoes a few transformations in the process (almost total submersion of most vampiric powers; darker hair [at least compared to the C:SotN artwork]; the goofy hand/parasite thing)...

*spoilers for those of you who haven't seen any D, or just can't connect the dots*
Well, essentially they are the same character. Alucard's father is Dracula, and D's is the offspring of the "Sacred Ancestor" (sometimes known as the Vampire King). The only difference between the two are name, background, story setting, and design.

uh-oh... a case of the invisible posts again...

but yeah, what Rycel said... although I'm sure that I wasn't really "spoiling" anything by pointing out a similarity between the half-human/half-vampire characters that both kill vampires and similar evil forces...

of course, as for the slip made by yourself referring to certain characters being Dracula...

...well, let's just say that not everyone here has seen all of a certain anime series, so that, in effect, would count as something of a spoiler...

but that's only if you really pay attention to that stuff...

Mmmff mpha nngo wpppff! (Translation: "Somebody get me a crowbar to pry my foot out of my mouth!") Well, I had just assumed that everyone in this thread would be familiar enough with both stories that they would know about *those things*. But I should know better than to make hasty assumtions now, shouldn't I? Well, as far as my big mouth about Alucard goes; "Que Seras, Seras". (That was a joke by the way, but...there I go again spoilering things.)

Well, um...okay. If anyone is a fan of the Hellsing anime, then you will like the manga. (I mean it. You just don't have a choice in the matter. Mwahaha, and all that.) But you might notice a few things are different from the get go. While both the show and the manga are gritty and dark, the anime seems to be moreso. In fact, the Hellsing manga is a little bit on the lighter side and some of the characters do act differently.

MANGA INFO
Hellsing's manga series predates the anime by several years. The first "issue" of Hellsing was published in 1996 under the name "Hellsing: The Legend of Vampire Hunter." It featured prototypes of the characters we know as the main players in Hellsing's manga and anime incarnations in a short hentai installment.

The basic framework of the hentai was similar to what its "contemporary" anime and manga illustrate: Alucard is an agent of Hellsing Institute. Human attack squads assist him. In this "misadventure," a female Hellsing solider (an early Seras. This woman, however, has dark hair and goes by the name "Yuri Kate.") is taken hostage by two vampires (their character designs are similar to Yan Valentine's and Alexander Anderson's). After… Some "action" (ahem), Alucard comes to the rescue, wielding an assault rifle instead of his trademark Casull and Jackal. The short ends with a scene similar to the ending of the first Order of the anime and the first installment of the official manga series: Alucard carries the brutalized female agent to safety, the end.

The author and artist of the manga, Kouta Hirano, eventually picked up his rough creation and reshaped it into a full (non-hentai) series. Syndicated in Young King Ours magazine (also home to the Trigun manga), the series continues to be published monthly.

The mood and tone of the manga is rather different than the anime, though the main points remain the same (such as Hellsing's/Alucard's/Integral's past, etc). There is a distinctly lighter edge to the manga. The anime is much more intense and darker on a whole. The characters' demeanors are somewhat different as well. Integral is serious but less controlled and steely (she flies off the handle at Alucard often, producing humorous results), Alucard curses often and seems a bit more human and callous than his anime counterpart. He also interacts with Seras and the other characters more and seems generally less enigmatic and aloof.

There are some storyline differences between the two incarnations of the series. The manga does not contain any mention of Incognito or Paul Winslow. Both the Millennium organization (the real enemy) and the Iscariot faction are introduced straight away. More information devoted to the manga incarnation of Hellsing and Alucard will be added soon.
