People, we have a new world's largest passenger plane, the Airbus A380. It has taken off, flew a contorlled flight, and landed safely yesterday (at least I think it was yesterday, I just couldn't understand the time in the article.)

Quote:
The double-decked, 308-ton plane landed successfully to applause at 2:22 p.m (8:22 a.m. EDT) after a flight of nearly four hours. About 30,000 spectators watched the white plane with blue tail take off and touch down, 101 years after the Wright brothers achieved the first controlled, sustained flight.

Heard about this thing on the Discovery Channel a while ago. My mother rode on the old airbus once and said it was the best flight she'd ever been on. It's still friggin amazing this thing can even fly.

Imagine the devestation if one ever crashed though?

Unlike most (commercial) airliners, and like the 747, the A380 isn't phallic-shaped. Whether that's good or not remains to be seen.

So... All in favor of getting a loan and buying the official aircraft of TI say aye.

More "devastation like a skyscraper".

Maximum take-off weight: 618 tons (560 metric tons)
Maximum passenger capacity: 830

Eep.

Of course, I'm a natural pessimist in these hypothetical situations.

830 passengers is the theoretical limit, and probably closer to the standard number on a planned stretched A380. Standard allowed by most Euro and US regulations is around 550 (i think), which is close to the number of passengers the high density 747s carry in Japan.

For the record, the worst air disaster in history involving only one plane involved one of these 747s- 520 our of 524 people killed (yes... there were 4 survivors...) in 1985. And that was due to poor maintenance. The A380 is safe. Zechs' "if" is correct.

...

Well... Uhh... There's always ANOTHER way for a plane to go down, but I think the airliner weapons of choice are 757s and 767s.

No doubt, but it's still a mechanical device designed and maintained by humans. Statistically speaking it will fail eventually.

I thought there was a story about an Airbus's autopilot/navigation system causing a bit of panic with the pilots (it wouldn't let them change course or something).

And I believe the A380 is still phallic shaped as it is tubular. Really, just listen to those feminists about how everything is phallic shaped. They seem to hate missiles, submarines, bullets... I'm sorry that the laws of aero- and hydrodynamics don't obey your political philosophies.

I haven't flown since 1999. And I was on a VERY crappy plane. I'd like to be on a nice plane someday.

peace

I think these planes would only fly long distance, like between continents or from one end to another. So, if you ever decide to go to Japan or something, you might get a chance to fly on this monster or a passenger plane.

Im bored, so I started wondering:

I wonder if the president will trade in his 747 for this?
