a: it's has mostly to do with your culture. We in america are basicly raised with the idea that stuff=sweet sweet life. Places like in the ol' USSR were raised to be very non-materialistic (kind of by neccessity, but that's also part of communism) and they see Americans and Western Europeans with tons o stuff and get jealous because they just cant have any of it.

A: Not the Tropicana. When I went there in '97 it was run down.
I don't know if they refurbished it since then.
