When filmmaker Morgan Spurlock nearly ate himself to death last year, little did he know that his diet would become a fast-food flashpoint. He merely congratulated himself for having, as a friend put it, "a really great bad idea."

"It's one of those things that's so easy, so simple, nobody else had thought of it, and it dealt with something that was so topical," Spurlock says. "I couldn't turn on the TV, I couldn't open up the paper without reading about the obesity crisis."

The idea? In February 2003, the strapping 23-year-old American male with a big voice, a Fu Manchu and the demeanor of a jock went on a strictly McDonald's diet for 30 days -- breakfast, lunch, and dinner -- and documented it for a film he calls Super Size Me, which hits theaters on May 7.

One of the rules he set for himself was that if a McDonald's employee asked if he wanted a super-size, he had to take it. Another was that he would exercise no more than the average person, which is to say hardly at all. Prior to embarking on this "journey," as he calls it, Spurlock had his baseline medical condition documented by a trio of specialists.

After three weeks of cheeseburgers and Chicken McNuggets, Spurlock was falling apart. He'd gained more than 20 pounds and his cholestrol had shot up 65 points. He was suffering from "McGurgles," "McGas," a fatty liver, asthma, chest pains, heart palpitations, sugar/caffeine highs and lows, and sexual dysfunction. (His girlfriend, Alexandra Jamieson, a vegan chef, of all things, said, "He gets tired easily.")

"By day 21, I was scared to death," Spurlock says. "You're seeing things as I felt them. You're hearing me talk to the doctors and getting my reactions as the doctor is telling me I'm going to be like Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas. He killed himself [with alcohol] in a couple of weeks. Could something really bad have happened? Absolutely."

Some have credited Spurlock's documentary, which won the documentary directing award at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, with influencing McDonald's. The company has announced that by the end of this year, it will have scaled back its super-size 42-ounce sodas to 32 ounces and the super-size 7-ounce fries to 6 ounces. Now it remains to be seen whether the rest of the fast-food industry will follow suit. Regardless, the current downsizing and diet debates no doubt will affect the film's theatrical prospects.

"I think it further legitimized the movie," Spurlock says. "The movie has helped change the menu."

The article goes on and on, so I'm gonna stop here. There are a couple of interesting random notes to point out, though, that I thought I'd share with you:

-Spurlock's diet was commented by one of his doctors as "medically significant" because it contributed to the world's first instance of fast-food hepatitis.

-Spurlock's documentary isn't just about some guy eating McDonald's for a month. It will also include interviews from U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson, heir to the famous Baskin-Robbins chain throne John Robbins, and a variety of Big Mac consumers (both young and old).

Eh, any food is unhealthy if you eat enough of it.

McDonalds like any resturant is supposed to be an occasional treat not a lifestyle.

However, Zechs, the sad things is many people MAKE it a lifestyle. Also, from a film-making perspective, this guy did something really cool. Honestly it's an awesome idea for a documentary, and I really want to see it. Even though I'm betting it will be disgusting.

but lets say he ate at Black Angus instead and instead of having to supersize when asked, had to order an appitizer or dessert when asked. Would you really expect that big of a difference?

No, I wouldn't. However the fact remains: there are people that eat at McDonalds daily or near daily. Many more than do the same at Black Angus. Millions more.

Hence the issue, and the idea for such a drastic documentary.

right, all I am saying is that the use of mcdonalds is inconsequential. Probably the worst thing for him was that rule about supersizing. It wouldn't suprise me if one actually would be able to live fairly healthish eating nothing but mcdonalds if they really tried.

well, they do have salads don't they?
you could get a somewhat well rounded diet, you got the slads, the apple pies, the burgers for the meat and grain
and the mc flurry for the dairy
what else do you need?

I was just talking about the mineral content and stuff in the salads, not that it was going to be an alternative to burgers.
you need the burgers too anyway for the protein

I prefer eating burgers at home instead, for 3 reasons:

1) They taste better.
2) You can put whatever you want on them without worrying about getting the wrong order.
3) The meat doesn't taste like a diseased rat.

first off, have you seen how much "dressing" they give you for those salads? you could easily just half for them cutting the fat way down and secondly.. that's compared to a CHEESEBURGER. that's a grand total of a quarter slice of american cheese and a meet patty the size of a kennedy half buck and two pieces of mcflavorfoam.

Personally I like In n Out.
