My dad screamed at me every time I took a turn a degree too wide, or cut in front of a car, or switched lanes quickly. But when he got out of the car, and all that was there was the shifter, 50 cent on the radio, and open road, man....

it took me about a yr to start driving, I was kinda a sports nut so i used to ride my bike to school most days, a 6-7 mile ride only took me 20 minutes so it wasn't too bad. But it is fun to see how fast your car can go... even if its an old honda civic. here is the key, drive with a cd repeating the song don't worry be happy. gotta love bobby mcfarron(and i probably misspelled that so someone correct me please).

I'm currently learning to drive, and my 18th birthday is exactly five weeks away. You're not too slow.

You're also not the only reluctant one. I hate driving, but I still do it. But, as long as there aren't too many bozos or hispanic kids running around constantly, it's not that hard to learn. Mostly, it's a perceptual problem. My first hour of driving experience was spent in my quiet neighborhood and the parking lot of the school at the end of my street (on a weekend -- no squishies!). The second hour was spent driving on larger streets, and with the sole purpose of learning to drive. After that, I've been forced to drive myself everywhere (except to the bus stop in the morning -- I think they're too tired to remember. I don't complain). Once I get comfortable with looking everywhere at once, I'll start with freeway. Currently, I just do surface streets like the Boulder Highway. (Don't let the name fool you: it's a highway only in name, median, and jurisdiction. It's only a 45 zone)

I can assure you that it gets better.

Oh, and don't be intimidated by your parents. If necessary, encourage them to be more articulate than stomping on the imaginary break and pointing in the general direction of something you should look at, but beyond that, take their suggestions into mind, and be thankful for the extra set of eyes. I know I am.

By the way, I don't suggest learning how to drive with a manual transmission, it's a bit much to concentrate on, just get the actually manuvering down and comfortable before you through in an extra pedal and shifting. Wait until after you get your liscense before learning stick (of course if you get comfortable driving before you get the liscense, have a go or 60 at it).

Oddly enough, I disagree. Get the skills down now or you may never develop them properly. But then again, all we ever had were stick-shifts when I started learning to drive (age 8 Wink ), made it second nature to me. YMMV.

You would Razz No, I say that because in todays pussified america, it's safer for everyone if learning drivers had less to pay atention to in the car than outside so not only would htey be safer but so would the rest of us. Once you get how to pay attention and actually drive it's much easier to through in that extra pedal and shifter. When I was learning to drive I couldn't get manual to save my life, but three years later, when I had a week grace period between my automatic mercury marquis and my dads old manual corolla I learned how to drive it pretty wel (it realy only took me a couple days to get it, but the other five were damn well needed practice).

Cars go vroom vroom and make black smoke. You're not the only one in that boat FDD. I'm half way to being nineteen and have no real desire to drive. Then again, I also don't have a car. W00t! No gas money!

Grr... I've had my permit for the last nine months, but my parents oh so rarely let me drive. It's like they go out of there way to say "no." Even though I have time and time shown myself to be quite capable. Oh well, renewal this Sunday, hopefully they'll let me on the freeway before I get my lisence. The sad part is that I was driving stick on the highway (with one of my friends and his mom) before my parents would let me on a mid-traffic street. Rolling Eyes

I learned how to drive with a Chevy 1500 Extended Cab- Long Box. (Think Suburban, just a truck.) So, I parked faaaar away from things and never dared to parallel park. But, like everything you get used to it. Before we sold that truck, I parallel park it with one hand. It's all about knowing how the car works. How it handles, how fast you can react in it.

You want tips to relax? Here's an idea:

1) Steal your mom's purse.

2) Drive to the airport.

3) Use the money in your mom's purse to buy a ticket to Hawaii...
