I apologize up front for this, but I cannot wade through all of the back and forth discussion that went on when this was first brought up about a year ago.

I have a little money, and want to buy a Rurouni Kenshin movie.

I remember that there is one title that everyone universally avoided, bad dubbing from Mexico or something.

There is one that is done by a studio not the same as the CN show that is set during the war.

There are two done by the same studio as the series, set after the series ended. Or maybe three. I don't know.

Okay, which is which? Where should I put the little money Uncle Sam and Cousin State left in my paycheck?

I really appreciate anyone's help who doesn't just tell me to buy them them all and let the Devil sort them out.

I don't know of any Kenshin movies. Are you talking about the OAVs? If so, yeah, get those.

well, as far as movies go, there's technically two available in the u.s.:

- Samurai X: The Motion Picture: this takes place during the time period of the television series and has characters introduced from the storyarcs that have aired on cartoon network ('wandering samurai' and 'legend of kyoto')...it's story is alright, bringing up a ghost from kenshin's past, but the execution could've been better...the dub isn't the same as the tv series however, as adv chose to use their own voice actors instead...

- Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal Director's Cut: this is the four episode ova earlier released as "trust" and "betrayal" but reconstructed in a movie presentation and available on one dvd...the story takes place during kenshin's past and helps flesh out a lot of what happened to him before the tv series...the animation and style are completely different from the tv series, as the comedic aspect is replaced by a completely serious tone, reflecting the setting...

find my post in this thread for related info and feel free to ask if you need more help...

There is Reflection, Trust and Betrayal, and The Motion Picture. These are the movies available.

And trust and betrayal is pretty good. Just bought it and was pleased. "The Motion Picture" is okay. Takes place sometime beteween wanderng samurai arc and kyoto arc I think.

I think wal-mart is selling a box-set of all three movies for around 50$.

saw this while websurfing and thought it might help in your deciding of what to buy (though it fails to mention "the motion picture"):

A query in Ms. Answerman's recent column over at ANN wrote:

I'm a bit confused on the Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X OVAs... I recently bought the Director's Cut of Trust and Betrayal (ADV DSX/005), which plays as a single two hour movie. The store also had a box set of Trust, Betrayal, and Reflection as three separate dvds (ADV DSX/001, DSX/002, and DSX/004), which I have heard described as a collection of six half-hour episodes. Is the director's cut dvd basically the first four episodes cut together into a single movie?

Originally, both here and in Japan, the four episodes in the first Kenshin OVA were released straight to video. The quality of the animation and the popularity of the OVA encouraged a “movie version (called “Rurouni Kenshin: Reminiscence) of the OVA to be created for release on the big screen. In the US, this movie was released as a Director’s Cut and gave fans the choice between buying one DVD or two, assuming of course they hadn’t already bought the two DVDs since they were released first. The differences between the two are minimal, so unless you’re a hardcore fan and want to see the first OVA in its original version, don’t bother buying the two separate DVDs. The second OVA, called Reflection, is just a visually stunning piece of work that takes the second half of the Kenshin manga and destroys it. Your money would be better put to use as kindling for a fire than wasted on this final OVA.
