I just watched my first episode of One Peice.

Let me preface this by saying that I have never, in my entire life, preferred the sub of an anime to the dub. This is because I like to watch the action and enjoy the art style and whatnot. I don't like staring at the bottom fifth of the screen for an entire episode. I had to do it with Full Metal Alchemist and there were so, SO many times in which I had to stop, rewind, and re-watch so that I could both understand, and WITNESS, what was going on.

And it bothered me.

I have never, ever had any problem with a dub. Even if the voices were nothing like the original, I was fine with that. Spike doesn't sound anything in english like he does in Japanese, and I SO prefer the english version.

But dear lord. The only way that I will be able to enjoy One Piece is subbed.

You are witnessing a once in a life time thing. The Paradox preferring a Sub to a Dub. It's like Spook coming back and declaring that Anime is superior to American Animation. It just doesn't happen.

But 4kids has obliterated One Piece. And I haven't even seen one second of the original. I just know that every bloody second of the show is ah ack job that needs to die in a fire of acid.

And I was really looking forward to One Piece. Really, REALLY looking forward to One Piece.

Grr.

I'm ashamed to say I've gotten used to the 4Kids One Piece dub. I've been watching the show since the start on Fox Box/4Kids TV and after a while I got used to the voices. When Usopp and Sanji first showed up I disliked their voices, then I heard Pearl's surfer dude voice... after that Usopp and Sanji didn't seem so bad anymore.

If a show is good enough it can survive the edits and still be enjoyable to watch. That was the case with Sailor Moon, DBZ, CardCaptors, and it also applies to One Piece. Sure, there's room for improvement and 4Kids could do better if they wanted to, but unfortunately, they don't want to. And they seem to really like that rap opening they made. That's why TVs have mute buttons.

I have never seen the Japanese version and I know it's better, but I say ignorance is bliss. If I don't know what I'm missing, then I can't really miss it. You just keep telling yourself that Beefy.

Now that we're in the Arlong arc everything just fits. It was worth the wait. The story is picking up and is much more interesting than the previous arcs were. I'm just glad Pearl wasn't part of the main cast.

Maybe my standards for dubs are lower than most people's, so I'll keep watching the dub One Piece and try not to dwell on what could have been.

P.S. I would be very interested to hear the parts of One Piece that FUNimation dubbed. But those and the reasons why the dub changed hands to 4Kids will remain locked away for a long time.

Normally, Beefy, I would agree with you. But every bit of the sound in yesterday's episode felt crappy, and I could tell parts were edited out. The main character (forgive me, I've only seen the show once, I don't know his name) obviously kicked the clown guy in the crotch. They changed it to him kicking the guy in the shins. I wouldn't be surprised to find that whole segments were edited to be entirely different, in different orders, or whatever. And every line of dialouge felt like it was written by some fan-subbing high school student.

I have never, ever been bother by a dub before. I really hope this is the last time.

Hey, don't knock the fansubs. I've seen fansubs written better than licensed ADV subs.

Although One Piece is one of my favorite shows, I just find the dub funny.
I don't have such a savage love for Anime that I feel the need to protect it.
Seeing a show get abused like that is just another form of entertainment.

It's not that I feel the need to protect it. I just feel that the show is so bad I can't watch it. It's just dissapointing since I've been hearing great things about this show for 3 or 4 years now.

Dude if Newbies can't complain without being told to be quiet or thier topics being ended because they've already been talked about or you guys just don't want to hear it, then why should we have to listen to you complain about a topic that has been discussed about a million times over the internet?

Shut up! No one wants to hear your bitching!

Because, life is not fair. Plus, there is a distinct difference between someone who joins just to post a "I H8 T00namI!!11!" and what CP wrote. Unlike newbs, CP took the time to explain his point of view, and made sure that he left enough for a discussion to take place.

Here is an example of stupid newb posts.

*sneep*

I think this is a better example... Razz

Spanky's right though, we usually try to discuss the issues around here, not pointlessly complain about how the kid's entertainment world is shortchanging us. Cool
I pretty much agree with Beefy regarding One Piece's treatment. I know it's a lot better show than what we're being given, but "Ignorance is bliss", and since I grew up with "Battle of the Planets", nothing that 4Kids does to it will ever bother me that much. Wink

There is a difference. I love animation in all it's forms. I've taken the past few years to learn about animation and to learn to appreciate it, and not care about where it came from. I also know that to put a show in English is not to ruin it in any way, shape, or form. I have always been adamant about this.

I don't feel that the "Directors vision of the show" has been ruined, nor do I feel that "Any show that is translated into english looses the original feel of the voice acting."

But I do think that 4kids has obliterated what should be a good show. It takes EFFORT to make a show that good, this bad. I'm dissapointed that I'm not able to enjoy something I was looking forward to.

If you still have an issue with this, please, take it up with me via Private Message. I'd be happy to field any questions and to clarify why my post is in order, and why others, such as the one linked to by Nobu, is not.
