Question: Why should we not click just to click? I don't understand. I've seen other sites with the same Google ads saying "PLEAZE CLIKC TOO TIMES A DYA". Will Google Matrix-type-guys come to my house and slaughter my computer in some sort of deranged samurai ritual?

That's actually explicitly forbidden according to the Google AdSense TOS.

Site Content

Site may not include:[sic]

* Pop-ups, pop-unders or exit windows that interfere with site navigation, obscure AdWords ads, change user preferences, or are for downloads. Other types of pop-ups, pop-unders, or exit windows may be allowed, provided that they do not exceed a combined total of 5 per user session

Limiting pop ups? That's why Google rocks.

As far as the click-rule goes:

Quote:
Prohibited/Fraudulent Clicks

Any method that artificially and/or fraudulently generates clicks is strictly prohibited. These prohibited methods include but are not limited to: repeated manual clicks, using robots, automated clicking tools, or other deceptive software. Please note that clicking on your own ads for any reason is prohibited, to avoid potential inflation of advertiser costs.

The only thing close to us being evil is "repeated manual clicks." I take that to mean "Click Back Click Back Click Back Lather Rinse Repeat Dig a Hole Dig a Hole Dig a Hole."

Point?

Clicking on an ad once a month or twice a month is not going to kill anyone, nor is it illegal, and the ads are pretty dandy. I've seen 5 that interested me today alone.[/quote]

I had to yell at Google to get an extra code snippet to make TDA's main.php frame show more relevant ads.
Now it's got Astro Boy instead of internet picture hosting and some panda shit.

I suppose its my turn to interject somewhat. If you remember anything about my posts to big issues, you'll know that I'm a list guy. (Not THE list guy, but A list guy.)
1. So far, I think this is a good idea. $105.53 a month can be somewhat painful to deal with at times. We have a major donor who, to be honest, is the sole reason TDA still exists. We appreciate him greatly (GREATLY), but there's no reason he should have to shoulder the burden of the entire server when non-obtrusive, text based ads can pay for things instead. To put things in perspective, since July 01 when TDA moved to paid hosting over $3300 has been spent to keep the site online. Who should pay that bill? (The answer isn't one guy.)
2. Someone mentioned earlier in this thread that TDA was promised to remain ad free. To my knowledge that promise was never made, but I don't want to discount the possibility. Does anyone have a reference on this I can look at? (If Tyler and I did promise TDA would always remain ad free, that could change things. Our goal here is not to be deceptive.)
3. WAY WAY back when Fuitad hosted us graphical banners paid the bills.
4. Popups are evil. In fact, my browser doesn't even show them.
5. These are text based ads that are actually somewhat relevant to the site. I like that, it's kind of cool that way.
6. There seems to be a mentality that putting up these ads is selling out to something or someone and is inherently evil. To be honest, this entire line of logic elludes me. Could someone, in an well thought out way, give some solid reasoning behind why TDA shouldn't have ads of any sort? (Good, well written, logical replies to this may very well affect the future of ads of TDA.)

Tyler, if there were an add that interested you and you clicked it, would they still get pissed at you?

And, what happens if we all decide to have a game where we see who can click them the most?

I'll say this:
Someone clicked on 6 ads within a 30 minute period.
None paid out, because Google's too smart for us all.
