Earlier today in a Dow Jones release, THQ's president and CEO Brian Farrell said that he thinks that Microsoft is "gaining traction" with sales of its Xbox console. He also noted that Nintendo's next-generation hardware seems to be in a popularity slump.
"I think we'll hear better Xbox hardware sales, while GameCube is still struggling," Farrell said.

Farrell's comments are the latest in a stream of complaints from publishers dissatisfied with GameCube's current selling rate in the market and adds to growing industry support for Microsoft's year-old console.

Nintendo of America is betting on a strong showing of its big holiday title Metroid Prime, a first-person action-adventure set in a sci-fi backdrop, coupled with its new Platinum GameCube, to drive sales of hardware and software through the fourth quarter. Meanwhile Xbox is banking on the success of Xbox Live and a plump 2003 lineup which includes Halo 2, Fable, and Midtown Madness 3.

Reports from many, including us, over the last few days have stated that the GameShark was no more, with InterAct Accessories and Datel parting ways. Today InterAct sent out word that the company’s still in fact in the game enhancement business. Specifically, the company revealed that improved versions of the GameShark will be released.
“It’s unfortunate that we have parted ways with Datel, our current supplier of GameShark”, commented Vice President of Marketing, Dan Manser. “The continued delays from Datel on new product releases like GameCube™ GameShark and CD-less PlayStation® 2 memory cards, coupled with persistent compatibility problems on PS2 GameShark have really damaged our credibility with retailers this year. That’s why over the past few months we have been active in developing alternative suppliers for GameShark and other technology-driven products.”
In addition to reaffirming the GameShark, InterAct Accessories revealed that a version of the GameShark for the Xbox is currently slated for release next year.

Groove Games and ARUSH Entertainment, publishers of Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project, announced today the signing of a global licensing agreement with Playboy Enterprises. Under the recently signed agreement, Groove Games will create, market and distribute a series of videogames based on the Playboy brand for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PC CD-ROM platforms. The games, which are slated for release during 2004, will fit into the world-builder genre as they build their own empire as Playboy founder Hugh Hefner.
The newly announced game will be backed by both print and online marketing by ARUSH and Groove Entertainment.

Hideo Kojima recently confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 3 will be making its debut next year at E3, now a series tradition. During an interview on Japanese television, Kojima also talked about how he wants to take the Metal Gear series online, though it's unknown whether 3 will be the game that does so.

Square has confirmed that Final Fantasy XI has finally reached 190,000 subscribers, with the number likely to hit at least 200,000 by the end of the week.

This is the magic number for Square, as 200,000 paying subscribers means breaking even on both the development costs and network upkeep for the massive online RPG. No small accomplishment for Square, as costs were over $16 million dollars.

Final Fantasy XI is still available on both the PC and PS2 in Japan, with a North American release expected sometime in 2003.

ike I keep saying the Gamecube's sales come strictly from thier lack of advertising. Who are the people who most buy gaming consoles during holiday season? Answer the parents. The parents watch T.V and BOMBARDED by ads for the Xbox on almost every channel and it purposing that it is THE SINGLE MOST POWERFUL CONSOLE. Since adults don't keep track of the gaming industry they assume that the Xbox is what's "all the rage" and goes out and buys it. Less advertising usually means less money to advertise which equals less product being bought. Thus why Xbox's sales keep getting larger as thier ads get played more frequently.

that's one way to look at it... though not advertising is waht can help kill a system (I seen maybe 4 GC commercials in the past week total, all for metriod prime, maybe another 4 for random GBA) PS2 and XBox are doing what Saturn and PSX were doing many moons ago, advertising their asses off. We haven't had an advertising war like we got now since lets see when the saturn was still big.... that was....95-96... that's a long dry spell. shame big N aint really joining in on the party.

Same here, I think Nintendo was trying to square away money away from avertising and to help keep the price of the console down, but it's backfired because no one even knows it exsists anymore.

it's a shame really, I don't want to see any console go under. I want the competition, competition means we win no matter what we use. Only way we lose is if our choice doesn't compete.

on an offtopic note, those few people who got sig pics... they are getting annoying.. and bigger I've noticed.

I think that has partly to do with the flock of seagulls hairdo.
