I've been looking at MP3 players recently (read: Today) and want to know some people's opinions. I know the iPod is king. My friend has one and that thing is f***ing kinky. The Dell DJ, however, costs $100 less for the same amount of storage, and has a longer battery life.

Real issue, however, is that if I were to get one, I will own a PC. I read somewhere that iPods don't work well with Windows. However, Dell DJ doesn't accept the .acc files that iTunes uses. Dell DJ only plays MP3s. Dell DJ apparently only works with Musicmatch.

Musicmatch sucks.

So it's either use a sucky program, or take forever getting things just right that the iPod works with Windows.

Any suggestions? Thoughts? Input?

I bought an iPod back in January. As a proud PC user, I can report that it works fine with both XP Home and Pro, and supposedly works with 2000 (haven't tried it, nor do I plan to, my 2k box is for anime and game patches/mods). 95, 98, and ME users are out of luck, as iTunes only works with the previously mentioned OS. There's also the issues with USB and Firewire. If you have USB 1 ports it'll transfer music, but reeeeaaally slowly. USB 2 is faster than Firewire for transfering music, but I have yet to try the Firewire port on my laptop. iPods don't include a USB cable (they have a Firewire one), but you can buy one for about $20, which isn't much more if you actually have the money to buy an iPod in the first place.

The only issue with using your iPod with Windows is that you can't go from computer to computer with it- plug it into one PC and that's the only one you can use with it, unless you want to format it. If you have multiple PCs, choose wisely- probably better to go with your more portable one in that situation.

After five months with my 20 gig model, I can say it's great. The battery life leaves much to be desired, but there's a $60 battery pack available from Belkin that runs on four AAs, and can extend an iPod's life through a 10 hour plane ride. It's been through a lot, having been used while skiing, on two 10 hour plane rides (Seattle to Tokyo and back), and almost every day going to and from school. It's still working great, no problems yet. I kinda wish I'd waited for the iPod Mini though- smaller, and you get a choice of colors that look much nicer than Eurowhite.

HOWEVER....

I wish now that I'd bought an iRiver. Look it up on Yahoo. They're cheaper then an iPod, but better than a Nomad (and probably better than Dell's thing) and an iPod. They look nicer too. I'll see if I can dig up a local guy's review of the one he bought.

In the end, it's the iPod or the iRiver. iPod has no problems with Windows, as long as it's not the older versions. Even though it's Apple, and even though the Eurowhite coloring is kinda sickening, it's still a good buy.

Not shabby, and as long as you don't need AAC support or the iTunes Music Store (it doesn't support either) you might be happy with it.

I'm gonna go with Dell. It doesn't only use Musicmatch, but you can use your Windows Media to upload music. I think that's the better deal, IMO.

I think the iPods look damn cool, even in their Eurowhite.

Question, what do you mean by 'format', Greer? Do you mean that if I was using one computer, fo me to use another I would have to plug in the iPod and the whole thing would reformat and the disk would erase and I'd have to reload EVERYTHING? Also, if it is formatted to a PC, may it be plugged into a Mac nad have stuff loaded from there? As in, can it be used on any number of Macs and just one PC, or is it just on computer that it may be used with?

Basically, yes. Default behavior for an iPod (while using iTunes to maintain an .mp3 library) is to auto-sync to any computer also running iTunes that you plug the iPod into. But you can only hold one music library on the iPod at a time.
http://www.apple.com/ipod/autosync.html

There's a switch in the preference panel to turn that off.
The following tech tip article helps explain it better (with links to help answer your other questions):

Manual Mode is your best bet if you're gonna be stealing music from multiple computers.
...and an iPod originally set up on a PC will also work on a Mac, but not the other way around. (Without reformatting).
...so...
Set up your iPod on a PC and turn on manual mode too.

I can't take any credit for it...it just shows once again that the most important letters in the English alphabet are: R, T, F and M. Wink

*Scratches head* I feel like I should know what that means . . .

ANYway, ordered my iPod today. I don't know that I've heard 3700 different songs in my LIFE (Amount the 15 GB iPod stores) yet for some odd reason I crave the 40 GB iPod that stores 10,000 songs . . . but I got the 15 GB, obviously. Now I don't need to buy a new CD player, either. ^_^

Now I just need to order the next hotness, my computer . . .

When you said CD player and iPod in the same sentence, it reminded me of this:
