Thats one thing I miss about toonami. It would be 30 times better if they started doing that again.

I guess I'll keep this topic open for a while longer considering that my statement was actually read and acknowledged.
The AMVs would be a great thing. But I think now that CN has grown as channel that you could only get on sattelite, into one on basic cable, they don't have the freedom to waste up two or three minutes of air time that could be better spent encouraging young children to purchase more Merch Merch.

Thats exactly what I thought when I started to see all that advertising and they started caring more about ratings than the fans. I thought that they changed just because they were on basic cable.

I don't know about where you are, but where I am, CN started out on basic cable.

From about '97 till '05 I've probably moved ten or so times, and only in the last three moves have I had CN on Basic. CN has now become standard on basic throught the country, as much as say MTV. The point is with the growth and popularity of the channel it has been forced to become more focused on the corporate money-making aspect. The freedom of the program directors is greatly diminished and so no time for fun stuff like random AMVs and clips.

Eh. All I know is Prime Cable carried it in '99 and Cox cable had it when they bought out most of Prime. It was on basic cable for most of the members of the TDA forums when they started five years ago. Or has it been six years?

Here they had it as a cable channel up until like early 2001 when they put it as standard basic.

I got cartoon network... in like 96 or 97... right before Toonami first aired. Didn't really like Toonami until they aired Robotech, then the fun began.

| Back before Toonami began, the only anime titles on CN were Speed Racer, G-Force (originally known as Gatchaman), and that 3-part japanimation special late at night ( I think it was called Robot Carnival). |

Wow! Robot Carnival. We saw that as a historical piece in Anime Club. Weren't there only like 2 good segments out of about a dozen?

There certainly is the issue of various anime getting run into the ground with a daily slot. On the other hand, in the weekly format, shows like Gundam Seed have gotten screwed over with low ratings -- owing to lacking interest due to the slow pacing in various episodes -- and end up somewhere like the early Saturday morning hours. And let's face it: some shows just aren't as suited to weekly airings for whatever reasons than other shows. And don't get me started on the scheduling fiasco that was Rurouni Kenshin that constantly reset that show to the beginning.
If there's a major reason I'd like to see Toonami returned to weekdays, it's to have a place to get regular reairings of stuff like Justice League (Unlimited). |

Well Justice League is over I believe. So even that isn't an option. And really they reset Kenshin for the same reasons they reset shows like DBZ. For those just coming into the series to be able to catch up or simply not owning that part of the series.
But Gundam Seed has the same issue as say Hack/Sign. Hack/Sign was so slow paced and wordy that unless you were in it from the beginning. There was no way you could get into the series.
But your right in that the series that would be run at night or in the afternoon need a lot of things. They need to be quick paced. They need to have very little plot. They also need a lot of action to keep short attention spans. And they have to be accessible to an american audience. Anything thats to Japanese can't fit into this. There really isnt a whole lot that fits into this mold. |

Actually what I was trying to say was that shows like Gundam SEED and as you mentioned, .hack//SIGN, are better suited for weekday airings so that the "slowness" isn't nearly as strongly felt. Come to think of it, apparently the same thing happened to Yu Yu Hakusho, and much to the chagrin of people like myself, the best part of the show has been relegated to the Friday night/Saturday morning graveyard part of their schedule.
The problem with what they did with Kenshin is that they pulled the schedule switcheroo so many times, they hardly ever made it very far into the series because they went back to episode 1 every time it finally returned. It made what NBC did to NewsRadio look pretty quaint. DBZ of course almost always had a prime slot on Toonami, so there's hardly any comparison.
Justice League (Unlimited) nearing the end of its run is true but besides the point. What I'd like on weekdays are repeats, and I'm pretty sure other people feel that way too, especially since subsequent airings of premiere episodes are rare. |
