Gamers the world over are celebrating the one year anniversary of the Xbox Live online gaming service. A service that boasts have a million members, making it the fastest growing online gaming server in history. Thee of the five top-selling Xbox console games sold during the month of October are online-enabled and two of the three are exclusive to the Xbox. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3 drove record numbers to the Xbox Live service just 24 hours after its release. Zelos Group has even taken a survey and reports that more than 25 percent of Xbox owners plan on going online with the Xbox Live service, as compared to less than 15 percent of PS2 owners.

November looks to be another big month for Xbox Live with 14 new Xbox Live titles due on store shelves right before the holiday shopping season. Xbox Live enabled titles slated to hit retailers in November include Project Gotham Racing 2, Counterstrike, and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. By the time the new year is upon us there will be more than 70 Xbox Live enabled titles available through retail sales.

"With one year of Xbox Live service under our belt, we've built a thriving community of passionate gamers, 92 percent of who say they would recommend the service to a friend,3" said Robbie Bach, chief Xbox officer. "Seeing online gaming really taking off this holiday season validates our vision for the future. Considering the aggressive worldwide rollout schedule for Xbox Live and the breadth of online games, our projection of one million Xbox Live subscribers by June 2004 is right on track."

Ubisoft and Sonopress have announced the official singing of an agreement to collaborate on the production of DVDs for the Xbox. The agreement covers duplication of Xbox DVDs for Ubisoft in the European and American market and will include titles such as Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3 and XIII.

"Ubisoft has chosen to invest in a real partnership with Sonopress, one in which mutual knowledge of each of our specificities and limitations will let us provide the best possible service to Xbox(tm) players, both in Europe and in North America," said Pierre Escaich, EMEA Manufacturing Manager at Ubisoft. "Guaranteed capacity, quality packaging, flexibility, and control over delivery times are key concerns for both partners. The worldwide release of Rainbow Six 3 is one of the first major proofs of the effectiveness of our collaboration and the first in a list of new Xbox(tm) titles that will soon be available on the market."

In-Stat/MDR, a high-tech market research firm, has announced that the video game console business has one again surpassed that of the box office in the United States for the year 2002. The firm cautions however, that the console business is following its established cyclical downturn. Shipments of consoles are expected to fall from those of 2002 and are expected to be down more than two million worldwide. The drop is largely due to a drop in shipments of the PlayStation 2 and PSOne, with both the GameCube and Xbox increasing for the year but not to a high enough degree to offset the difference.

The cycle should see an uptrend again in 2006 to meet or surpass that of 2002 as the big three are preparing to release their next generation consoles in late 2005.
