In my college campus, the Native American group here, NAISO (North American Indigenous Student Organization) has held rallies every Columbus Day to inform everyone about the truth and how there are still many of us around who do not feel Columbus should be as celebrated as he is. We instead change the name of Columbus Day to "Indigenous People's Day" in hopes of educating and enlightening people about the other side, the victims who still survive the invasion started by a greed-driven individual named Columbus.
Of course, it hasn't always been easy, and we get some flack from other people from time to time. One year we got into an argument with a group of Italian-American students who were Pro-Columbus Day, but we were able to settle the dispute through open discussion. It's funny, because I know there are probably many other Italian-American figures in history better suited for Italian Pride. I also have cousins with Italian ancestry who don't agree with what Columbus Day signifies and the way in which Columbus is taught in schools.
So, now that you've got some more facts, what's your opinion? _________________ "The principles you live by create the world you live in; if you change the principles you live by, you will change your world." -Blaine Lee

You know, in all honesty I had completely forgotten about Columbus day....mainly because I don't care about it. Oh and I was wondering if you knew what tribe your ancestry is from JP? I think i'm around 1/32 indian, but that doesn't count for anything these days. And why should we celebrate Columbus when we should be celebrating Amerigo Vaspussen, I mean the freakin country is named after him?! Or better still the Indians who made their way from Russia several thousand years ago? Sorry about the random ranting, but you did ask for my opinion and you got that...i think. _________________ There is limited intelligence in the galaxy, but the stupidity of the universe is infinite.

Wait, when was/is Columbus Day anyway? Unless a holiday gets my school a day off it is not observed in the slightest way. The only way I'd ever be pro-columbus day is if I could take a day off, but considering I don't have school on mondays I still don't really see me caring to much either way.
The only holidays that mean anything to me are easter, christmas, and independance day. I would say Memorial Day and/or Veterans Day but I don't have a military family i the slightest.
I do have the firm belief that Halloween should be a national holiday and in such should be taken off. Oh and FDD that's Asians who came through russia, not indians. At the time of coming through they were asian, as they were mostly from China, Mongolia, and Japan. _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar

Columbus Day is a Federal Holiday, but one schools don't always observe. Normally, my district has a three day weekend for Columbus day. This year... No such luck. Oh well.
As for those who think columbus was a b4stard who should be shot... How about renaming it Leif Erikson Day? Or whoever the Viking guy who reached Canada was called. _________________ Ice cream has this erotic sense to it- kinda like the one choclate and strawberries have.

asian indians also have a serious beef with columbus...my best friend's birthday falls on the same weekend, and he always shows signs of disappointment in being associated with columbus (he's the one who told me about the REAL columbus back in fourth grade)...a person in my culture class also brought up the issue of columbus day and how what we learn as kids is really only one side of the story...
i really don't see anyone "observing" the holiday in any way...it's just been another day in my life for the past seven years, since the last time i had it off was back in grade school...
it's good to hear you're spreading the word johnny, as i too would hope that we'd eventually stop hiding the truth from our youth... _________________ "Life's a journey, not a destination..." -Aerosmith ('Amazing')

Columbus Day is a holiday for one reason and one reason alone. It's to celebrate the finding of the New world by the Old. The man himself has nothing to do with the day except having the find attributed to him.
What the old world did after it was found is not what the day represents. The mexicans don't liek the spanish, the indians don't like the italians, the english, and especially the americans. Yes atrocities were commited but when really has "we were here first" ever worked? Kinda sucks that it doesn't, but it's not always the bullies that kick people off or out.
It just pisses me off when people claim nowadays that their anscesters rights were abused and want some sort of reparations for it now. Well tough fucking shit. It really asucked that your anscestors had to go through it, but what does that have to do with things today? You didn't go throguh it, your parents didn't, and who today is responsible to for those things? NOBODY. There is nobody that should give reparations, there is nobody who should get reparations. That was the past, this is the future. There is no March of Tears, there is no Slavery. None of it. History books have changed, they (a majority of them) no longer teach the victors history, if anything it has become popular to show the losers history and show the victor in an evil and terrible light. Neither is right. Yes atrocities were done. But the white man was NOT the only one to do so. You can't tell me that the indian people did not do some terrible things to prisoners that they might have taken.
All that is left in the peoples of today is inaccurate knowledge and bullheadedness. They are more than present in all sides of the agrument.
Columbus Day is the day to celebrate the fining of america by europe. You don't have to celebrate it, but know the day for what it meant to be. _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar

You know, The way the Government originally stole this land from the indians (/ native americans/ whatever) reminds me of how Bill gates stole Windows from Apple.
JP you've inspired me! I'm gonna go get Tyler and we'll hold a protest against Microsoft every colombus day.

I have to go to school today to make up for the days I missed because of Hurricane Isabel. And Columbus was an idiot, he didn't even find what he was looking for. _________________ "I hope you haven't become too attached to your head, because in about two seconds it will be festively decorating that back wall."

nobody gives columbus day off anymore; or just about nobody. None of the local school distracts or colleges did. _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar
