Di$ney has started a new trend of threat against humanity, and it's even WORSE than another of their damn direct-to-video-release "cheapquels."

"THIS DISC WILL SELF-DESTRUCT IN 48 HOURS."

That is the warning The Walt Disney Co. will issue this August when it begins to "rent" DVDs that after two days become unplayable and do not have to be returned.

Disney home video unit Buena Vista Home Entertainment will launch a pilot movie "rental" program in August that uses the self-destruction technology, the company said on Friday.

The discs stop working when a process similar to rusting makes them unreadable. The discs start off red, but when they are taken out of the package, exposure to oxygen turns the coating black and makes it impenetrable by a DVD laser.

Buena Vista hopes the technology will let it crack a wider rental market, since it can sell the DVDs in stores or almost anywhere without setting up a system to get the discs back.

The discs work perfectly for the two-day viewing window, said Flexplay Technologies, Inc., the private company which developed the technology using material from General Electric Co.

The technology cannot be hacked by programmers who would want to view the disc longer because the mechanism which closes the viewing window is chemical and has nothing to do with computer technology.

However, the disc can be copied within 48 hours, since it works like any other DVD during that window.

Buena Vista did not disclose pricing plans but said the discs, dubbed EZ-D, would be available in August in select markets with recent releases including The Recruit, The Hot Chick, and Signs.

A DVD that self-destructs... Jesus! And you thought Bill Gates and Steve Case were crazy...

its different in that with divx you could expand the rental time or purchase the dvd afterwards if you wanted to.

Won't this be sort of a waste of DVDs. No one wants to buy a movie and be forced to watch it in two days or else.

2 days? I think that's a bit on the short side seeing as most of the rental places let you hold on to them for 5 days, maybe more.

I love how the RIAA and MPAA create reasons for people to START pirating their goods.

Another great Tyler quote,

Our society buys things, then throws them away. What do we have to show for it? Only 215 countries that hate us, is all. So what, no we're going to waste all this material by buying self-destructing DVDs that we could instead use to make spoons to feed people with? Bah. I'm boycotting the crap out of these bastards.

did you boycott circuit city for pushing divx? probably not. it won't catch on that's all and disney will drop the idea. its a shame though that they didn't figure out that its been done before and it didn't work. I aint botcotting shit because of eisner. I'll still watch disney animation and I'll still buy their movies if I like them. besides if we boycotted them we woulddnt be able to see Pirates of the Carribean on July 2nd and that would be a shame. A damned dirty dieing shame. Shit, that movies gonna rock.

Wow. If this takes off, can you imagine how many self-destructing acidic DVDs are gonna be dumped into landfills so the chemicals within them can leak into the groundwater supply and make the environment self-destruct?

I pity the fools who didn't realize that technology wasn't just a hobby in time. I pity the fools who didn't realize it's important for the companies to be one step ahead in technology to not be the victim of it.

This invention seems more evil because a DVD rental is normal and returning it is just your job. It's also good since the disc will be more difficult to copyright. Yet, somehow...

I told my friends about this. They thought the idea was so dumb that they thought I was making it up. They were like "No way is that true" and I was like "Yes way" and they couldn't believe it. Seriously, this is a very dumb, wasteful product. And I hope Disney loses a lot of money on this so that no companies ever try doing this again.
