Racism 101

Here's a few facts... listen up, kiddies...

1) Asian-American college attendance and highschool graduation rates are much higher than most other races. Why? Because of certain criteria set forth by the U.S. governing immigration, people coming in from Asian countries have it much tougher comparatively than Europeans. America is already getting the cream of the crop from Asia. Compare that to the African-American and Native-American populations, who have basically been here since the beginning. I say, let the Asian-American populations grow a bit more, and in a few years you might find a lowering in school completion. Increased population=decreased opportunity. Native and African-American populations have already been here for many generations, and because of that our populations are filled with both the "cream of the crop" and the "underachievers". Many Hispanic populations are also full of both the "haves" and the "have nots". Just because both black and hispanic populations are, technically, "immigration populations" doesn't mean that they were awarded the same strict screening of education that most modern Asian and Middle Eastern immigrants must face. Racial quotas do exist in immigration proceedures. Or, to put a Darwinian twist on things: In order to get into the country, only the strong survive. If you already live in the country, there is no neat "screening process" that will "filter-out" the uneducated within preexisting native populations.

2) Native-American graduation rates are much lower for Natives living in urban areas than those living on reservations. The reason is said to be caused from stronger community ties found on reservations, where an entire population comes from the same background, as opposed to urban situations, where there may be 2 Native American students in one highschool of 300 students. Also, different reservations are in different states of economic growth. While a few have been able to create better opportunity and schools because of economic growth through opening resorts and casinos upon reservation lands, many others are not so fortunate. In just about all of these much poorer reservations, many families are unable to support themselves without having children go into the workforce early, and the stress upon completing school is secondary only to being able to feed themselves. It's really hard to get through highschool when you need to work 30+ hours to support the family and make sure that your younger siblings don't starve.

I know for a fact that my family has always set importance upon education, but you also have to see how hard it is for someone from a low-income situation to be able to compete with people who are able to afford to attend better schools. In Michigan and many other states, many universities grant Tuition Waivers to Native-American students, but these are not based upon racial quotas or anything like that. Michigan State University, for instance, is legally obligated to provide education to Native-American students (who are legal residents of the state) because the land was bought off from Indians. The same goes for Notre Dame and a large number of other colleges and universities. WE get special treatment because they signed treaties and document guaranteeing such treatment. Is it fair? Of course it is! They took our land, so they pay us back by giving us opportunity we aren't afforded staying on the reservations.

I came to MSU my freshman year with a minority scholarship. Without it, I would have never been able to afford it, and that is the truth. Minority scholarships are handled by MSU just the same as any other scholarship. The only difference is that these scholarships are "tailor-made" for people in my situation, who's outstanding academic achievements allow them the opportunity of recieving a scholarship. However, minority students like me would get an extra shot at attaining a scholarship. It doesn't seem fair, but that's the nature of things. Today, I have been able to establish legal residency in the state of Michigan and get a portion of my tuition paid by the Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver. The rest is paid for by student loans, financial aid, and aid from my tribe. I do not get free schooling! I am aided because of certain legal guarantees and by organizations (my tribe) who choose to aid me in the completion of my college education. It's no different from people recieving scholarships from the Kellogg Corporation or National Merit Scholarships or something, and the aid I get from my tribe only helps to cover many of the costs of college, like books, etc.

3) Here's the nature of affirmative action:

Person A has 12 blocks

Person B has none

in order to make things more equal, opportunities are given to Person B to allow them access to the blocks, so suddenly:

Person A has 8 blocks

Person B has 4 blocks

Now Person A feels like they are getting cheated because they have less blocks, but the reality of the situation is that you cannot create equality without taking away something from those with superior opportunity. In other words, white people feel like they're getting cheated because a few jobs are now being taken by us brown-skins, but you can't simply make more jobs for everyone, so to make things equal, some whites have to miss out. It's the nature of the game, people. It only seems unfair because it is fair, and you can't open doors for some without closing doors on others.

4) Of every white friend and classmate I've met, not one of them has ever told me of a specific case where they or someone they knew was passed over for a job because a less-qualified black guy was hired instead. Racial quotas are illegal! Let me state that again. Racial quotas are not the same thing as affirmative action. Nor is Affirmative Action a law. Companies are not obligated to hire quotas of certain shades of skin color. Universities are not obligated to bring in certain quotas of black, asian, or hispanic students. Minority scholarships are an aid, but that is not to say that every person who recieves a minority scholarship will attend. It's the same for any person who is accepted at any university. It is an aid in recruitment and registration of students, but it has never been proven (except in cases where Universities were using quota systems) that white students were not given the same opportunity as minority students to attend.

5) Equal Opportunity is not racial quotas either! Equal Opportunity, by definition, is not racist.

6) The minority group that has profitted the most from Affirmative Action has been white women.

so, to sum it all up, Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action do not equal Reverse Racism and Racial Quotas; comparing populations that already live here (meaning they contain both educated and under-educated, well-off and poor) to populations built upon strictly-screened immigration (meaning they contain only the best educated) is foolish; "Brown-skin" doesn't always mean you'll get a better shot at a job; poor people have it rough.

I'm sorry, but I'll have to totally disagree (well, except for the pimp part). ANything race based is not taking 4 blocks from the 12, it's taking for blocks from whoever's white. The idea of a scholarship ought not to be based on the color of skin, but on socio-economic class and aptitude. My family's as poor as hell, as far as Americans go (well, my mom's side, at least), but we manage. I may finish this thought, but I'm getting tired. And yes, I know it's only 8:30PM here.

I also disagree, but to a lesser extent. I wholeheartedly support preferential treatment for Natives, if the land was taked without recompense, or said treatment was part of the deal. After all, it IS a little binding.

"Racist" scholarships I have no beef with. It's their money, and they can give it to whomever they please. I do prefer that scholarships be based on need or merit, but I see no problem with having other criteria.

I believe that people who "have" to quit school to work should get help. However, it is very, very rarely the case that they actually must drop out. There are plenty of ways to make money without leaving school, and it is possible to hold out for a few months while your kid graduates from high school. I have little sympathy for drop-outs of any kind. There is always something you can do. Just try.

Thirdly, socioeconomic status != race. I'm white, and (to some people) automatically finacially secure. This is not really the case. The thing about college is, most people can't pay for it![i] Especially at the well-regarded schools, the majority of the students receive financial aid. Only the distinctly upper-class are likely to be able to afford $100 000 to go to college. If you can't pay for it, fill out a FAFSA and get in line.

I hate to sound like an uncaring bastard, but I have standards. They're not hard to meet, and help is available. So quit crying to me.

I just need to state inconsequential matters, inconsequential theories on the topic or facts of the matters are going to be weighted by no matters what fascias ( I don't know the english word)of race , someone is indefinably going to judge and be judged a like, whether bias of financial or educational stature. It's considerably the prudence of human nature.
