From the Adult Swim message boards:

SwimBuddha wrote:
Due to concerns from our ad sales department about giving up one hour of sellable children's inventory on Saturday night, we regret that we were unable to obtain Saturday nights for Adult Swim action.

Instead, beginning Thursday, April 22, Thursday nights will be devoted to action programming. Sunday nights, beginning April 18, will be devoted to comedy. We actually believe ratings on these two nights will be stronger for these changes, but we admit it's not as good as adding an extra night of Adult Swim programming.

Monday-Wednesday programming will remain a mix of comedy and action.

Other announcements:

-- The Animatrix premieres Thursday, April 22, at 11 p.m.

-- As previously announced, 52 new episodes of InuYasha premieres will begin airing on Thursday nights at 11 p.m. on April 29.

-- 26 episodes of Wolf's Rain premieres begin airing on Thursday nights at 11:30 p.m. on April 29.

-- Case Closed, known as Detective Conan in Japan, will premiere Mondays-Thursdays at midnight beginning on June 7.

For the sake of full disclosure, please know that the above decision was protested earnestly and repeatedly by those in charge of Adult Swim. It is a battle that only very recently was lost. And it is a battle that we will continue to fight with the future hope that we will be able to move into Saturday nights later this year.

Additional Note: I know many of you will ask if there is anything you can do to change this decision. There is not. But strong ratings on the forthcoming Thursday action night would certainly go a long way towards solidifying our case in the future. As always, we appreciate your continued support.

they just need to extend toonami out to 1 or 2 in the morning since AS Saturday seems to be out of the picture.

no, what they really need to do is just make a new channel where they can do as they wish... As in, they can just show evertyhing that they didn't have enough room for on cartoon network...

Darn adverstisers... I was looking forward to a wonderful night of YYH, Gundam SEED, Cyborg 009, Rurouni Kenshin, Inuyasha, and Wolf's Rain. Ah well...

They really ought to make Toonami until 2am even if it's just rerun spots. Or if it isn't Toonami then at least air some good action shows after it like Batman and Superman. Maybe CN plans on keeping that failing piece of rubbish Knights of the Zodiac at 12:30...

Here's what I'd like to see as a tack onto Toonami...

12:00 - Dragonball
12:30 - He-Man (or G Gundam if possible)
01:00 - Superman: TAS
01:30 - Batman: TAS

More likely 12-1am would be rerun spots for Yu Yu Hakusho and Gundam SEED... or possibly Megas XRL and JL Unlimited.

What would be nice is for them to have 12-2 dedicated to batman, superman, beyond, and JLU.

I don't see why they can't just start and end Toonami an hour earlier, the advertisers would get there extra hour and Adult Swim would get there extra day. This is just stupid, makes me less happy about Toonami Saturdays.

no, advertisiers would still be shorted an hour. What the execs are talking about is kids programming. Not teen, not adult. Basicly, if toonami got cut to 8pm instead of 7 AS could join saturdays -- but how happy would all the fans be to learn that Toonami is being shorted again because of that elusive 6-11 year old age group.

I'd rather WS keep Toonami as is and fight for saturdays for a while longer.

i'm actually favoring jeff harris's hypothesis on what happened:

Jeff Harris, in this thread, wrote:

I have a theory about the changes. Okay, it's a couple of theories, and I put them on my site. I'm just going to focus on one of the major reasons why Cartoon Network made the decision to pull Adult Swim Action within a 48-hour timespan.

Have you guys been paying attention to the news, or read any newspapers lately? There is a major, major push by lawmakers to regulate and censor every aspect of broadcasting, mostly radio and television. This normally wouldn't phase cable television, but one paranoid lawmaker from Texas named Joe Barton figures that there ought to be some hearings about cable television and satelite television. Broadcasters like Bud Paxson, founder of the PAX network, are on the Hill asking for further hearings on cable networks and satellite companies. Mr. Paxson said he saw over 600 hours of pornography on cable and satellite television (now we know how he spends his free time). Of course pornography in his definition refers to shows and programming that offends him.

Media companies are becoming so paranoid about what's broadcast on television (even way before the Superbra incident, they were planning an assault on "indecency"). Live programs are no longer live (they're now on tape delay) and shows are being edited to conform to rigid scrutiny. Now, here's the thing. Up until yesterday, cable television was nowhere in the conversations in Washington. Broadcast outlets are jealous of the freedoms allowed on cable television, and the excuse Congressional regulators gave for that is because "people pay for cable programming, broadcast is free for all to watch." Now, broadcast regulators have begun pushing the lawmakers to go after cable as well as broadcast television. And cable has always been a domain of freedom, to a point.

This witchhunt on indecency has begun to freak out cable network groups like Turner Broadcast Systems. Adult Swim is currently the biggest draw for Cartoon Network, a network generally seen as a "children's network." When the network announced plans for the Saturday expansion of the action shows of Adult Swim, there was no spector of indecency hearing hovering over the network as there is now. Now, to have an adult-themed block on a night that usually draws younger audiences wouldn't have caused a murmur before the congressional scare. That's why they scheduled it in the first place. Now that threats of lengthy hearings that would present evidence in front of Congress (how would you guys feel if they showed something like Cowboy Bebop or Trigun in front of Congress as evidence of airing indecent programming on the network), they had to scrap the Saturday night Adult Swim block.

However, for a group of guys that had been working on the block since before New Years, how would you tell them that they couldn't have the bloc of hours that they wanted? Simple. You tell them that the ad sales department needed an hour for commercial space. The block doesn't get completely scrapped. It's now airing in a time period that shouldn't get the ire of soccer moms and paranoid politicians, Thursday nights from 11 PM to 2 AM rather than Saturday nights in the same period.

Of course some people would accuse me of using this space to take the blame off of Toonami. That's not true. I'm an investigator who researchs before he gets irrate at the wrong sources (well, that and the fact that my other theory suggests that CN doesn't want to give Williams Street dominion over a good chunk of the network).

while i am somewhat disappointed over what's happened, i'm not all that irate since adult swim will still be on the same amount of time as it was before...i figure if it weren't for the black and white cards, no one would've even known about the possibility of saturdays again in the first place...

I'll bet they could have fun with the kiddies and air two uncut episodes of Inuyasha at 1AM.

Screwing the fan base and removing the show from Adult Swim...

It be fun to see the reaction of the Inu UBER fans that's for sure.

I have so wanted to see what those InuYasha fans would do. You know, I decided that if they attacked williams street, I would be there to make a stand to get the AS gang out safe. Only need a minigun, some L.A.W.s (Rocket Launcher), Shoutgun (Sawed-Off), Frag Grenades, Plasma Grenades, a T-79 Tank, Instant Noodles, and a Wind-Tunnel, to get rid of evidence.
