That scene was originally meant to be in the movie, though. No one expected 9/11 to happen, so that's forgivable.

This is a different case. Paramount INTENTIONALLY inserted a scene that they KNEW wouldn't be in the film, just to get people jumping.

The hell it was. They yanked the trailer for 9/11, but the footage was never meant to be in the film.

So, this becomes a teaser instead of a full-blown preview... I guess we probably won't get Black Sabbath on the soundtrack, either. Sad

George Miller to lead 'Justice League'

Warner Bros. is moving aggressively ahead with the bigscreen adaptation of DC Comics’ Justice League of America, with George Miller (Mad Max, Happy Feet) on board to direct.

Still, making all the pieces fit has been complicated by overlapping superhero projects in the pipeline, since Justice League features a pantheon of superheroes, including Superman and Batman.

Batman and Superman are active properties for the studio, though the next installment in the Superman franchise has taken a backseat to Justice League in part because Warners is so keen on the JL script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney.

Justice League will likely feature the characters of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash and Aquaman.

Warners is in the preliminary phases of casting, though several sources close to the project said that Christian Bale, star of the revived Batman film franchise, and Brandon Routh, star of Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, would probably not appear in the movie.

However, director Chris Nolan, current steward of the “Batman” franchise for the studio, would prefer that Warners delay JL until after he finishes “Batman” projects in development; Bale has also let his uneasiness about Justice League be known.

To work around these issues, the studio explored making Justice League as an animated film or with motion capture, but all indications are that the film will be special-effects driven live action.

The project is so complicated -- and casting dependent -- that even those deeply involved in the project are holding their breath until production begins.

“They’re working very hard to get it to happen,” said one party close to the project. “But there are so many characters it’s complicated.”

It was for this very reason that many believed Warners would move ahead first with a follow-up to Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. Singer, however, is busy with Tom Cruise's upcoming Valkyrie.

TV channel UKTV G2, which shows cult comedy and game shows aimed at young men, is to be rebranded Dave.

UKTV says the new name is based on the idea that "everyone knows a bloke called Dave".

The channel, which carries shows like Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Top Gear, will be available on Freeview for the first time when it launches in October.

The move will mean Dave can be watched in 20 million homes across the country, according to UKTV.

The head of Dave, Steven North, said: "Changing the channel name to Dave enables us to create a strong and noisy personality for the channel that immediately aligns us with our core 16-34 male audience."

UKTV is a joint venture between the BBC's commercial arm, BBC Worldwide, and cable TV provider Virgin Media.

Dave, which starts up on 15 October, will replace UKTV Bright Ideas on Freeview.

Does Hogan know best? Or, more important, does NBC know best?

The network is bringing back American Gladiators as a midseason program, and yesterday NBC announced that wrestling-superstar-turned-tortured-reality-show-dad Hulk Hogan will be the host.

"Hulk Hogan is an American icon," Craig Plestis, an NBC vice president, said in a news release. "For over 20 years he has been a symbol of strength and toughness in all facets of entertainment. His electrifying personality will no doubt inspire Herculean efforts from our everyday challengers. There is no one more qualified to host this program."

No one? Maybe because Regis Philbin has a steady gig already.

For those who don't recall, American Gladiators, which aired from 1989 to 1997, featured pumped-up "Gladiators" - no one was mentioning steroids - with names such as Nitro and Turbo pitted against Average Jock competitors in a series of odd athletic-type events. The one that sticks in Mr. Flip's mind involved dodging tennis balls shot out of a cannonlike apparatus while scrambling across an obstacle-course-type field.

More from NBC: "The eight new gladiators [four men and four women] are action-adventure stars ready to take down the everyday challengers with hard knocks and explosive attitudes. Each challenger will also have a unique story to tell - and a compelling reason why they need to win."

A unique story to tell? Mr. Flip doesn't want Extreme Makeover: Gladiator Edition. The only story he wants to see is Gladiators kicking butt.

'Superman' writers won't return
By MARC GRASER, Daily Variety

Superman needs some ideas for what his next adventure might be.

"Superman Returns" scribes Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris have opted not to come back and pen a sequel to the 2006 summer pic that would have reunited them with director Bryan Singer. The three also worked together on "X2: X-Men United."

As a result, WB is now taking pitches for Supe's next outing from other scribes -- just as the studio is trying to figure out which actor will don the character's tights in "Justice League."

Industry chatter claimed the studio would start fresh with a new take on the Man of Steel, as if the previous pic never happened.

Reasons mentioned were the introduction of Superman's son with Lois Lane, as well as the film's less-than-expected domestic haul of $200 million and another $191 million overseas.

But WB denies such plans and said next pic would be a sequel with Brandon Routh likely to wear the "S" on his chest again. Legendary Pictures is co-developing and co-financing the project.

New pic also will up the action quotient, however -- something Singer promised fanboys at last year's Comic-Con in San Diego.

Dougherty and Harris are pursuing more directing gigs, with Dougherty having recently completed "Trick 'R Treat" at WB as his first pic. He's also looking to pen a graphic novel and children's book.

Harris, who had previously helmed "Imaginary Heroes," is writing and directing "I, Lucifer," based on the book, with Daniel Craig attached to star.

Stolen from here: Wink

Hollywood has said "no thank you" to several live-action versions of popular Japanese manga series during the past two decades, despite good box-office receipts earned by the animated "Pokemon" series. Now, Variety reports Twentieth Century Fox is taking a gamble with a nonanimated version of "Dragonball Z."

The family friendly event flick finds Justin Chatwin (Tom Cruise's son in "War of the Worlds") playing Goku, a powerful warrior who protects the planet from numerous would-be conquerors intent on controlling the mystical objects from which the movie takes its name. In this film, he faces off against James Marsters ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), who plays the evil Piccolo (oooh, intimidating).

Most intriguing about the picture, though, are the filmmakers behind the fast-tracked project. James Wong, who helmed the underrated "Final Destination," penned the project's most recent screenplay and is set to direct. Also worth noting, Hong Kong action superstar Stephen Chow, who wrote, directed and starred in the superb "Kung Fu Hustle," makes his Hollywood debut as a producer (and hopefully makes a cameo).

Chatwin has begun fight training with 87Eleven, the stunt company that choreographed the fight sequences in flicks such as "The Matrix," "The Bourne Supremacy" and "300." It's a good thing, too, because production begins later this month in anticipation of a sooner-than-you-think Aug. 15 release date. Let's hope the quick 9-month turnaround doesn't affect the quality of what could be a hip new franchise.

I love the way they worded that. They make it seem like Pikachu got that treatment. Laughing

Nielsen To Offer Copyright Protection System For The Web
By Antone Gonsalves, "InformationWeek" , Dec. 5, 2007

Nielsen, best-known for its rankings of TV programming, said Wednesday it is developing a system that would police Web sites for copyrighted material, and notify site owners and content providers when video has been posted without authorization.

Nielsen is developing the system with Digimarc, a provider of digital watermarking technology. The service, which the companies plan to start rolling out in the second quarter of next year, would tap into technology Nielson currently uses in the services it sells to advertisers and TV networks.

The system would first be used for policing the use of TV programs, clips of which are often posted on user-generated content sites, such as YouTube, which is owned by Google. Much of that content is uploaded without authorization or compensation to the content provider, which has led to tension between Internet companies and Hollywood studios. These tensions reached a peak in March when Viacom filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Google, accusing the company of massive copyright infringement.

The Nielsen/Digimarc system would be offered as a way to quickly discover unauthorized content on sites. To do that, the system would leverage Nielsen's existing watermark technology, which is used on more than 95% of TV programming distributed today. The watermarks are used by the meters installed in people's home to identify the programs they watch. Nielsen sells data from people's viewing habits to TV networks and advertisers.

Besides watermarking, Nielsen also tags over-the-air TV programs intercepted by 700 installations across the nation. For those programs without watermarks, Nielsen creates a digital signature based on unique patterns in the audio signal.

Nielsen's watermarks and digital signatures are stored in a database that would be used in the copyright-protection system. When a clip is posted on a Web site, the system would search for the watermark. If one doesn't exist, then the system would create a digital signature. In either case, the identifier would be compared to what's in the database to find a match. Once the program is identified, the Nielsen system could notify site operators and content providers when a clip is being shown without authorization.

While the system wouldn't automatically delete unauthorized material, Web site owners could configure their systems to take that step. "The purpose of this system is not to be a policeman on the Internet, but to provide a system where the content provider can have confidence and knowledge of where their programming is being distributed," Dave Harkness, senior VP of strategy and business development at Nielsen, told InformationWeek. "They also can develop a business relationship with the content distributor, which in this case is the Web site."

Nielsen is confident it can convince many TV producers to buy into the system, since the company already has relationships with most of these businesses. Convincing Web sites may be more difficult, since many already have some kind of copyright-protection system in place or are developing one. Google, for example, is developing a system for YouTube. In general, most sites take down unauthorized content as soon as the owners notify them.

Nielsen believes it can turn many sites into customers by offering a system that's ready to plug into their infrastructure, saving them the cost of building a copyright-protection system themselves, Harkness said. Besides generating revenue from the service, Nielson could also use it to track the use of video on the Web and sell the gathered data to advertisers.

If Nielsen launches its service it will have competitors, albeit smaller businesses. Those companies that provide services for policing the use of copyrighted content online include Audible Magic, Vobile, and BayTSP.
