Bruce Campbell, who played Ash in the Evil Dead trilogy, says that there is "some validity" to the rampant rumors about the possibility of a movie that would pit his character against Freddy of the A Nightmare on Elm Street and Jason of the Friday the 13th franchises. But Campbell added that nothing is imminent. "As I've been explaining to people, this wouldn't be a movie where you could just make a phone call and go, 'Let's do it,' and then it all happens," Campbell said in an interview. "You've got three franchises."

Campbell added, "[That] means you have 17 lawyers, each going, 'Yeah, look at my franchise. Yeah, look at my franchise.' So you have to get past that. Then you have to get past the question of 'how will the characters be treated?' What would you do with Ash? There's no way I'd be in it if I lost. No way. The good guy has to win, especially in that movie. You couldn't kill two whole franchises, but we could sure maim them."

Jessica Alba Completes 'Fantastic Four' Cast
The ''Dark Angel'' star will play Sue Storm, a.k.a. Invisible Girl

By Gary Susman, Entertainment Weekly
AP

Jessica Alba demonstrated her super-powers on TV's ''Dark Angel,'' but her heroics may go unseen in her next movie. That's because she's playing Sue Storm, a.k.a. Invisible Girl, in the upcoming ''Fantastic Four.'' According to the Hollywood Reporter, Alba's casting, rumored last week, is now official. She beat out such reported contenders for the role as ''The Notebook'''s Rachel McAdams, ''Felicity'''s Keri Russell, and Elizabeth Banks, who plays Daily Bugle staffer Betty Brant in the ''Spider-Man'' movies. She completes a cast that includes ''The Shield'' star Michael Chiklis, ''King Arthur'''s Ioan Gruffudd, and ''The Perfect Score'''s Chris Evans.

Alba's character is the love interest for Reed Richards (Gruffudd) and one of four astronauts who become super-powered mutants after their ship is bombarded with cosmic rays. Richards becomes rubber-limbed Mr. Fantastic, while Sue's brother Johnny (Evans) becomes the pyrotechnic Human Torch, and pal Ben Grimm (Chiklis) becomes the orange-brick creature known as The Thing. Tim Story (''Barbershop'') is directing the film, which 20th Century Fox expects to release next July.

Vietnam's first Pop Idol-style competition was launched last weekend, and has already unsettled viewers and the authorities.

One judge has been berated for making harsh comments, and the program's makers, National Television, have been rebuked by the Ministry of Culture for selecting judges without "sufficient political or professional merits."

The show, named Sao Mai - Diem Hen (Morning Star - A Destination) is not Vietnam's first televised singing contest.

However, in past programs, the results were always decided by a panel of judges, and few winners became major stars.

Vietnam National Television (VTV) hopes that the format change will win more attention for the contest.

Popular Vote

As in the UK and U.S. versions, 12 contestants will perform live over 10 weeks in front of a four-judge panel, who offer a critique, but do not decide who has to go home. The audience gets to vote for the winner by text message.

The organizers have invited specialists from GMM Grammy, a leading Thai entertainment company, to help the contestants with make-up and professional training.

Three finalists will get an album contract.

Nguyen Hai, from Dong Tay Promotion, which co-organizes the show, says the winning contestants will have real cracks at stardom.

"The contestants will get signed with VTV, while our company will help with the management side of things as part of the promotion strategy."

There were some positive press reviews after the show aired on Saturday, but the local press published a number of complaints from journalists and viewers who thought some of the judges' remarks were too rough to bear.

One of the judges, poet Do Trung Quan, was singled out for telling a contestant that she was outrageous.

He was also attacked for telling a contestant that she had a "too strict dress code."

Culture Shock

It could be argued that Do Trung Quan has simply taken on the role performed by Simon Cowell, famous for his sarcastic--and sometimes cruel--comments in the UK and U.S. versions of Pop Idol.

But that kind of attitude has come as a shock for many Vietnamese.

The vice minister of culture sent a letter to VTV, saying the ministry had received numerous complaints from viewers about the judges' style.

According to the letter, the judges' comments deviated from the ruling Communist Party's principles of "building and developing Vietnam's culture into an advanced culture imbued with national identities."

Asking the VTV to criticize the judges, the ministry suggested that in future episodes, the panel should "include members who have sufficient political and professional merits," and that a "proper working code be practiced in order to avoid similar mistakes."

With nine episodes to come, it remains to be seen whether this Pop Idol-style show can win over the government and the Vietnamese audience.

'X-Men' Director to Remake 'Superman'
Associated Press/AP Online Jul 19, 01:13 PM EST

LOS ANGELES - After a couple of false starts, "Superman" is ready to leap to
the big screen again with a new director: "The Usual Suspects" filmmaker
Bryan Singer.

The role of "Superman" himself, however, has not yet been determined.

Singer, 38, has already proven adept at comic-book adaptation with "X-Men"
and "X2: X-Men United." He said the original Christopher Reeve movie is a
favorite.

"My interest in 'Superman' dates back many, many years," Singer said in a
statement late Sunday. "In fact, it was the (1978) Richard Donner classic
film that was my day-to-day inspiration in shaping the 'X-Men' universe for
the screen. I feel that 'Superman' has been late in his return and it is
time for him to fly again."

Recently, "Charlie's Angels" director McG dropped out of the current
"Superman" project, making way for Singer to take over. Tim Burton, who
re-imagined "Batman" in the late 1980s, took a run at a re-imagined
"Superman" around 1996 with star Nicolas Cage, but the movie fell apart in
pre-production.

Singer's "X-Men" movies, from the Marvel Comics universe ('Superman' is from
rival DC Comics), helped ignite the current trend of superheroes who battle
super-ordinary life problems while grappling with eccentric bad-guys.

"We have always been committed to bringing 'Superman' back to the screen,
and we're very happy to have Bryan on board this project," said Jeff
Robinov, production chief for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Well, this is encouraging... Cool

Quote:
Jon Peters, whose credits include 1989's "Batman" and the 1988 TV
retrospective "Superman: 50th Anniversary," will produce the new 'Superman'
movie.

However, this is not... Razz

We've just received word that the teaser trailer for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was shown moments ago at the Pixar panel held at the San Diego Comic Convention. Running between 30 to 60 seconds long, here's how our correspondent described the imagery shown to the audience:

Quote:
The teaser opens with a tracking shot of the Earth from orbit, like you're flying backwards. Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" song plays over the images.

Suddenly the Earth blows up. Then the shot freezes in mid-explosion.

The words "Don't Panic" appear onscreen.

The explosion of the Earth then continues on, resuming back to normal speed. Debris of the planet fly everywhere. The camera zips through the starscape.

Then the words "The end of the world is just the beginning" appear onscreen.

The starfield resolves itself into a stylized hitchhiker hand.

The teaser ends with the words The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Don't leave Earth without it - 2005.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is scheduled to open June 3, 2005.

starwars.com is pleased to announce that Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith is the full title of the next Star Wars film, scheduled for release on May 19, 2005.

The Sith are masters of the dark side of the Force and the sworn enemies of the Jedi. They were all but exterminated by the Jedi a thousand years ago, but the evil order continued in secrecy. They operated quietly, behind the scenes, acting in pairs - a Master and an Apprentice - patiently biding their time before they could take over the galaxy. In Episode III, they'll finally exact their revenge on the Jedi.

The title was publicly revealed today in a special presentation to a packed audience of Star Wars fans at Comic-Con International in San Diego, California. "For some time now, the naming of a new Star Wars movie has taken on some special meaning among core fans, who love to take part in guessing games before a title is announced, and then engage in debate once it is," said Steve Sansweet, Director of Content Management and Head of Fan Relations for Lucasfilm. "Let the debates begin."

The title wasn't the only surprise for those in attendance at the presentation. Click here for news about even more Star Wars DVDs in 2004 and 2005, surprise celebrity guests, new planets in Episode III, and more...

Well, that's it. No reason for me to live anymore. *whistling while pulling out loaded gun*

Hmm, let's see. Bald dude from "Overrated FX Drama #862," some guy from Bruckheimer's latest crapfest, another guy from an even crappier movie, and now Jessica Alba. All they're missing is the guy who directed Barbersh- oh, wait, what do ya know?

I'm just glad I still have my bootleg DVD of Roger Corman's unreleased FF movie. It'll put this travesty to shame.
